• The Class of 1962 presents SAYREVILLE FREE PUM 1050 WASHINGTON pARUhi' N.J, RD. QUO VADIS 1962 The Years Between Our TWENTIETH ANNIVERSARY PUBLISHED BY THE SENIOR CLASS SAYREVILLE HIGH SCHOOL SAYREVILLE, NEW JERSEY TABLE OF CONTENTS Page 8 Page 15 Page 59 Page 66 Page 71 Page 81 FACULTY SENIORS UNDERCLASSMEN COURSES OF STUDY ACTIVITIES 3 SPORTS FOREWORD Our four years at Sayreville High School have been memorable ones. These were the years between; the time when carefree, we entered the high school world and then began to recognize the satisfactions and problems of a society soon to be our responsibility as mature adults. True, the four years in high school are short; yet they are vital to every stu- dent. He has been enriched by the knowledge that surrounds him, aroused by the winning touchdown, and thrilled by the beauty and maturity of the Senior Prom. Reaching our goal, graduation, brings a sudden awareness that these four years will always be remembered and cherished. Like our yearbook, our hearts and minds will always be brimming with little and big — but unforgettable — memories and experiences. 4 DEDICATION As Quo Vadis celebrates its twentieth year of publication, we, the class of 1962, dedicate our yearbook to our Alma Mater, which has echoed our footsteps as we hustled to class and harbored so many of our emotions as we became young adults. Many secrets and memories will remain after we turn to face the world outside. The years may roll by, but we know that time can never change our heartfelt feelings for our school. Our dedication is only matched by its sincerity. 5 DR. RICHARD S. POLLACK Superintendent of Schools TO THE CLASS OF ’62 Your graduation constitutes the epilogue to “The Life of the First Sayreville High School—nee Wilson School” (1939-1962) and celebrates the 20th publication of this book. My congratula- tions to You, the Building, and the Book on having “run a good course”! May the Building continue to serve the community well, albeit in a different capacity! May the Book maintain the upward trend of its stature and value! MRS. LORRAINE DE GAETANO Secretary Commend yourselves to God in the knowledge that through your faith He will help you to harvest, with joy and satisfaction, the fruits of your efforts. R. S. POLLACK Superintendent 6 DEDICATED SERVICE MRS. MILDRED TRENT Clerk Mrs. Trent, Miss Helpa, Mrs. Semasko, Mrs. Yanas. MISS MARGARET M. WALSH Principal To the Class of ’62: The Class of 1962 is the ending of an era of education at Sayreville High School. Just twenty years ago, in 1942, Sayreville was honored with its first graduating class. In June 1962, you are the last class to graduate from Sayreville High School. Sayreville has indeed shown progress in the twenty inter- vening years. Our town has grown in size, our population in the school has tripled, but our philosophy of education, which was the guide to the training of the students of 1942, is still the steer- ing wheel in the education of the Class of 1962. As we review the achievement of all those who have grad- uated from Sayreville High School since the year 1942, we are impressed by one outstanding similarity: all the graduates have shown good character and true American loyalty. I know the Class of 1962, even as it ends the tradition of Sayreville High School, will continue to uphold the traits of good moral character and true American principles which it has received through the training of high type professional people. I know that the Class of 1962 will measure up in all respects to those graduating classes which have gone ahead and have made a name for themselves in the world. In your world of to- morrow, you will reflect the training of Sayreville High School and will bring honor to its memory. THROUGH THE YEARS MARGARET M. Scholarship — Leadership One of the most outstanding groups at Sayreville High School is the National Honor Society. Membership in this organi- zation is based on four requirements, termed, the “cardinal quali- ties worthy of encouragement in all schools”. The students have been selected by the principal and faculty on the basis of scholar- ship, leadership, character, and service. During an inspiring ceremony, those who qualified were made members of the Na- tional Honor Society. The Senior Class was proud to have them as their representatives in such an organization. D. Four years of hard work to raise funds; then we finally embarked on the Washington Trip—an experience treas- ured by every senior. Upon arrival, we lunched at the Shoreham Hotel where we resided during our stay in Washington. Following this, we visted the Thomas Jefferson Memorial and toured the Capitol, where we had our group picture taken. A hectic day completed, we returned to the hotel and dined. During the evening, we attended the National Theater, another memorable event guided by Bedlam Flashback- 50 Rollicking . . . Unforgetable. Miss Walsh, our wise and moral principal. We then stopped at the Hot Shoppe for the traditional snack. The following day, we visited Mount Vernon, Arlington Memorial Cemetery, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. We then returned to the Shoreham for dinner and checked out, leaving for home. We arrived at the high school at 11:30 p.m. We know that each of us in the Senior Class will always cherish and remem- ber our trip to Washington. After Mr. Todd, our advisor, conducted the election of the editors-in-chief, literary editor, senior editor, art editor, and business manager, we began working on our central theme and senior section. Our weekly meetings soon be- gan to give shape to our particular dream of our yearbook. Many meetings later, after innumerable Q u o V AUGUST OPPEL—DORIS CHUDKOWSKI Editors-in-Chief A D I S cakes, cookies, cups of coffee, pretzels, crackers, soda, headaches, laughter, pictures, writeups, and art work, we began to see a fuller image of our yearbook emerging—to our delight. The Quo Vadis staff is grateful to Mr. Todd for his untiring assistance, inspira- tions, and guidance in the production of our yearbook. Preparing Quo Vadis has been a pleasant and satisfying experience for the staff members. 56 QUO VADIS EDITORS FRONT ROW, left to right: D. Jones, C. Krenzel, S. Androvette. BACK ROW: B. Handville, D. Samuels, B. Piatek. As upperclassmen, they have reached one of the milestones in their years at Sayre ville High. Under the guidance of advisors: Miss Gavron, Miss Jan- kowski, and Mr. Geletei, they have worked diligent- ly for two years to attain their stature. One of the fondest memories is the Sophomore Sweetheart Dance at which Barbara Piatek and Ricky Paprota were crowned Queen and King. This year they finally received those long-anticipated class rings. Their officers in 1962 were: President, Marty Szar- vas; Vice President, Barbara Piatek; Secretary, Joyce Samuel; and Treasurer, Mary Lou Lagoda. They enjoyed the previous years at S.H.S., but they are looking forward to their senior year when they too, will be able to display their abilities to serve, enjoy, and become assets to our school. Musso, J. Feltz, P. Dieker. SOPHOMORE CLASS As freshmen they found the program at Sayre- ville High to be a novel experience, but they also brought something new to the school. They com- prised a very large class. Thus it became necessary for them to form a council having a representative from each homeroom. Their confusion overcome, they elected Ted Puchala, John Feltz, Phil Musso, and Vernon Applegate as class officers, and they then settled down to the routine of high school life. As sophomores they had become full fledged citi- zens in our school. They began by electing their class officers: President, Phil Musso; Vice President, John Feltz; Secretary, Pat Dieker; and Treasurer, Judy Vitello. Under the fine leadership of their ad- visors, Mrs. Newton and Mr. Paul, they held several dances that proved to be enjoyable. The highlight of their sophomore year was the Sweetheart Dance at which a Sophomore King and Queen reigned. Our dream is realised Modzelewski s Masters! Take two! 63 Flashback— Where the boys are??? FRESHMAN CLASS The freshman are the most recent members of our high school. After set- tling down and getting used to their new surroundings, they have become effec- tive members of the student body. They have already proved their competence by holding their Freshman Dance which was a huge success. 64 FRESHMAN CLASS OFFICERS J. Karlowitz, R. Kees, L. Wallis. Missing: K. Fennelo. The primary aim of this course is guiding the stu- dent in developing the ability to think intelligently, probing the depths of both subject areas and abstract ideas. He is encouraged to apply this ability: by com- prehensive study in mathematics, science, language, and social and moral situa- tions. When he graduates, he has the self-confidence which can only result from such a complete and well-rounded course. 66 We corrected our faults COMMERCIAL The Commercial Course is geared to prepare these students for the business world. An excellent background in typing, bookkeeping, and business law, form the base of the course. During the final semester of the senior year, fifteen weeks of office practice in jobs outside the school in neighboring communties enables the student to acquire additional skill and to understand and adjust to the life of an office worker. 67 By Willingness GENERAL COURSE Often students entering high school are undecided about their futures. For these students a General Course is available. Oppor- tunity to learn about a variety of subjects is offered in order to as- sist them in ascertaining a type of work. 68 and Guidance INDUSTRIAL Many of our students are mechanically inclined and have creative ability. For these people who will be invaluable in maintaining the equilibrium of the daily lives of us all, is the Industrial Course. In this course, certain skills are developed, enabling the students to graduate, enter industry or private enter- prise, and further themselves according to individual interests and ability. Train- ing in woodwork, metalwork, mechanical drawing, cooking, sewing, home man- agement and academic subjects prepare these boys and girls for countless occu- pations. 69 SCHOLASTIC AWARD WINNERS FIRST ROW, left to right: E. The scholastic award letter is a large chenille “S” on which an open book is superimposed. Every year this letter is given with a certificate of award to any student in the high school who has maintained a “B” average in all subjects for the school year. The scholastic award winners’ “S” is prized by all who receive it. There is a desire by many to achieve this award of distinction. It can be displayed on a sweater in the same way that a varsity letter is used. The number of awards is gratifying because it indicates that the students at Sayreville High School are interested in achievement. Those who are not able to excel in athletics are now re- warded for superior work in scholarship. These are the scholars who are honored by our school and our Board of Education each June. The S.A.W.s are the nucleus of our Honor Group. 70 71 STUDENT COUNCIL STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS LEFT TO RIGHT: J. Pu- chala, Vice President; M Kwitkowski, Secretary; R Zeh, President; A. Outstanding students are elected by their classmates. The Student Council advisors are Mrs. Angelica Marra and Mrs. Irene Arthur. When Sayreville High was a new school, Stu- dent Council members were, naturally, inexperi- enced. As the years passed, the council has gar- nered and passed on a wealth of experience. Each year Student Council members have been challenged by a variety of problems and projects. Their response has resulted in numerous ideas that have been beneficial to both school and community. Through the years, the members of the coun- cil have facilitated the development of interest- ing and educational programs which have in- cluded programs, clubs, faculty basketball games, and the introduction of scholastic letter awards, as well as the traditional athletic letters. Most outstanding has been the annual Youth Week Program. Drives to enlighten the student body concerning the problems which surround them have always been the interest of the Stu- dent Council. This year, a new type of assembly program was initiated to inform the students about im- portant school situations. These programs were enthusiastically received. The Student Council has always worked for the benefit of the student body, and we hope that future members will continue in the same vein set by their predecessors. The Bombers, rebuilding with underclassmen this year, expect to make next season a winning one. The Little Bombers had a new coach, John Ko- waleski. The loss of Joe Klosek early in the season hurt the Bombers. However, they came back stronger in the last half to post a final record of two wins and ten losses.
