This fine governing has thus given us a prosperous town to work and do honor for. The Class of '60 is extremely grateful to the governing body of Sayreville for the assistance it has given us. 6 Left to right: J. Keenan, S. Nowak, F. Samuel, E. Kolodziej, P. Karbowski, S. Board of Education Doing their best to manage the Sayreville School System in the most efficient way possible, our Board of Education is constantly striving to improve the educa- tional status of the town's schools. Not only are the basic necessities for curricular studies being provided, but also extra-curricular activities. Expressing sincere thanks, we would like to say to each and every member of this team that without them our school system would not be the progressive kind which it is. 7 R. S. POLLACK Superintendent TO THE CLASS OF '60 The moon is next—and then to outer space! Who will be first to solve this enigma, the U.S.A.; the Soviet Union? What price the competition? Prestige or ignominy; leadership or subservience; survival or annihilation; life or death? Whatever alternate you choose, the wisdom to decide and the courage to act are essential. May you enjoy this beatific combination, tempered as it must be by the love of God and dedication to His Word. R. S. POLLACK, Superintendent 8 Mildred Trent There is nothing so fine as a new beginning. To close out yesterday and to start anew is a glorious time for youth. The influences of religion, home and school have molded your thinking. All your life the power of influences working on you will be felt and feared. Never lose sight that the only time to do is today. What you do each day will measure what you are and what you will become. Believe in tomorrow with its promise of newness. Let it add freshness and spirit to your daily life. 9 IRENE ARTHUR M.A. New York University Biology Algebra Math Review ADEE BENNETT B.A. Alfred University American Academy at Rome, Italy Latin and French DOROTHY CHECK B.A. Montclair State College General Science CHRISTOPHER CORNELL B.S. The primary purpose of this course is to teach the student to think intelligently and logically. They are taught how to apply their knowledge when the opportunity to do so arises. Through the comprehensive study of language, mathematics, and science, the student is assured of a sound education, not only academically, but morally and socially as well. In the Commercial Course students are offered subjects that will be mandatory in the vast world of business. The preparation received by every commercial pupil guides him in the directiorfof numerous opportunities in a business career awaiting a high school graduate. Through this guidance, the commercial student is assured of a happy and successful future. 24 For those who are undecided about their future, the General Course is offered. Through study in this course, students are given a taste of a variety of subjects. They are introduced to the business life, college subjects, and shops. In this way one is given an opportunity to find and select a field in which his main interests center. Many students who possess special abilities to work with their hands and create many original objects are offered the Industrial Arts Course. Here a student learns to work with wood and metal and also, at the same time, acquires a knowledge in the Mechanical Drawing Department. Through instructions received in this course a student earns the qualifications necessary for the many openings in the industrial field. 25 High-Jump 26 X MRS. ROMATOWSKI Starting off as freshmen with trembling hands, outstretched and searching, we looked for a beginning, a path to take us through the years ahead of us at Sayreville High School. Two people, unselfishly and unfailingly, took our hands and guided us through those important years. Mrs. Joan Romatow- ski and Mr. Richard Reichenbach are those two people with- out who our feeble attempts at success would have been mere graspings in the dark. Joining us in our senior year. Miss Doris Gavron also gave her time and energy to see us through our remaining year. You have worked hard with us; we know the job was not an easy one. Without your steady, patient guidance the many projects undertaken by our Class of '60 would have never been realities. Our true feelings cannot be expressed adequately within these few sentences, but one thing we can say is thank-you. The most important job was the creation of our class yearbook. Our work began with the selection of the editors by our advisor, Mr. Edward McGarigle. As the months passed, every member of the staff worked diligently in the prepara- tion of the 1960 Quo Vadis. After the Senior section was started and completed, the planning of the group pictures to be taken was our next job. Work began on the other parts of the book. Through the co-operation and guidance of everyone connected with the book, our work was finally completed. As we viewed the finished product in June, we realized our labor had not been in vain. The entire staff of the 1960 Quo Vadis extends thanks to Mr. McGarigle for his guidance and assistance. 74 Advisor Mr. McGarigle Editor -in- Chief Cathy Shigas Senior Section Editor.........Carol Roginski Business Manager.........Judi Armstrong Art Editor................Kathy Williamson Lay-Out Editor...............Arlene Bogush Literary Editor....................Carol Major Sports Editor......................Jim Clark 76 M November 9; 7:00 a.m.—our cherished senior trip began. We were to spend two days at our nations capitol. The bus trip was boisterous and filled with much singing and talking. Upon arrival, we had lunch at the Shoreham Hotel where we were to reside during our stay in Washington. Following a stop at the F.B.I. Building, the entire senior class congregated irr front of the Capitol to have a group picture taken. After visiting the Jefferson Memorial, we dined at the hotel. During the evening we attended the enter- taining movie, Porgy and Bess. After the movie, we had a midnight snack at the Hot Shoppes. The following day, we resumed our tour of Washington. Stopping at Mount Vernon, Arlington National Cemetery, the Bureau of Engraving, and the Smithsonian Institute we added many happy moments that truly enriched our lives. We then left for home and arrived at Sayreville High approximately 11:00 p.m. This memorable trip will always be thought of as the most cherished event of our senior year. 77 A new addition to the activities at Sayreville High is the Glee Club. Under the excellent assistance and supervision of Mr. Christopher Cornell, the progress of this group is remarkable. The members as- sembled once a week in preparation for the Spring Concert in which they participated. The Class of '60 wishes to extend the hope that the new group will remain as one which the school may be proud of. 78 President Treasurer Jim Applegate ..
