MARIE PARNELL Assistant Advisor The pleasures which a class receives during its four years in high school depend to a great extent upon the help which they receive from their class advisors. We can say: as the seniors of 1957, that we very much appreciated the kindness and understanding shewn us by our two advisors, Mrs. Parnell and Mr. Mount. From the day that we walked into Sayreville High School as shy fresh- men, who were scared to turn a corner in this big school, until the night of graduation when we were nervously standing in cap and gown awaiting the presentation of the piece of paper which was the fruit of four years of scholastic labor, we were urged on by our advisors to seek out bigger and better things. To these two teachers we owe four successful years in Sayreville High School. ANNETTE SOWA Salutaforian PAUL COX Valedictorian BARBARA ZONKOWSKI Tertiarian i A glimpse at the Capitol.” WASHINGTON 'Relaxing' in the hotel room. ' Goofing off on our trip around Washington. Our Mascot Finally, November 19, 1956, the big day of the senior trip had arrived. On this day we, the seniors, along with eight chaperons left Sayreville High School with our destination being Washington, D. C. Just before we entered Washington, the group had lunch at the Hot Shoppes in Arlington, Virginia. After lunch, we boarded the Deluxe Super Service busses which took us to Washington, D. C. Upon arrival in Washington, a group picture was taken in front of the Capitol. All in one afternoon, the group visited some of the points of interest including: the Capitol, the F.B.I. Building and the Supreme Court. We, also, witnessed the changing of the guards at Arlington Cemetery. At 5:00 p.m. we checked into the Manger Annapolis Hotel where we had dinner. That same evening we visited the Folger Library and then attended the Capitol Theatre for a showing of the picture Power and the Prize. The following day, after a night of revelry, we visited many more interest- ing places. They are: the Bureau of Printing and Engraving, the Smithsonian In- stitute, the Museum of Natural History, the Washington Monument, and the famous home of George Washington—Mount Vernon. After checking out of the hotel at 2:00 p.m., our party once again stopped at the Hot Shoppes for dinner. The time for our return trip to Sayreville had arrived. And so, after a four hour return trip, we puiled into the S.H.S. parking lot about 11:00 p.m. Tuesday night. This trip will serve as a lasting memory to all of us who went on it. QUO Early in October of 1956, the seniors who wished to participate in the planning for the yearbook, assembled in Room 22. Our first assignment was the writing of a paragraph stating what we felt were our qualifications for the specific position in which we were in- terested. From these, Mr. McGarigle, our advisor, based his choice of the various editors. He selected the editor-in-chief, literary editor, art editor, and business editor. Our art workers designed several covers and we were given the task of chosing the best one. The Dummy Committee Left to right: R. Markulin, P. Cox, T. Galinski. This done, we began on the remaining parts of the book. We each had our particular assignments and toiled diligently to complete the book before the deadline set by the publisher. The weeks before its return for approval seemed endless. After corrections, our book was sent back for the final printing. Thanks to Mr.McGarigle, our brain child was all we had hoped for. JUNIORS SOPHOMORES FRESHMEN . . . UNDERCLASSMEN 62 JUNIOR ADVISORS JUNIOR CLASS As we, the Junior Class, entered Sayreville High as Freshmen in September of 1954, we were all eager to learn what was ahead of us. We were soon acquainted with the school and also enjoying sports activities and dances. Our record dance for the year, The January Jig, was attended by many. During our Sophomore year, we held two dances. One in the fall was the Jack Frost Fling which proved a good success. In February we saw the crowning of the Sophomore choices, Pat Pru- sarczyk and Fred Salamon as Queen and King, of the annual Sweethearts dance. We were already looking forward to getting our Junior rings. Our Junior year, and rings had come at last. This year our dances included the Mystery Ball and the Calendar Dance.' Students enjoyed Come Out of the Closet-, our humorous Junior play. Now we cannot wait until we are Seniors and can attend class night and graduation. JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS 63 9 SOPHOMORE ADVISORS SOPHOMORE CLASS The first day at Sayreville High found every freshman scared to death of all the new things happening around them. But, as the days and weeks went by, we found ourselves better acquainted with all the upper classmen and teachers. When Novem- ber rolled around, we had our first dance, which we called The Nickelodeon Swing. Then came the election of officers. Martin Liegal was elected President; John Buckler, Vice-President; Barbara Cozzi, Secretary; and Jeanette Zuber, Treasurer. In our Sophomore year we also held an elec- tion of officers. I hey were: President, Tom Michaels; Vice-President, Martin Leigal; Secretary, Joanne Shindle; and Treasurer, Kay Ann Michalsky. Our second dance was called The Plymouth Rock, which was a huge success. Then came the dance called ' The Sweetheart Serenade for which every- one had been waiting. This was the dance at which a King and Queen would be elected. We all voted and elected as our King, Tom Michaels, and as the Queen, Barbara Cozzi. We all enjoy Sayreville High and are looking forward to our remaining years here. SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS 65 66 FRESHMAN ADVISORS FRESHMAN CLASS An unusually large Freshman class entered Sayreville High School in early September. For most of us it was an occasion to be remembered. At first, we had difficulty getting acquainted with the ways of the school, but within a few weeks the school day became routine. We soon chose James Applegate as our class President. Other officers elected were: Harry Pachkowski, Vice-President: Bill Falgares, Treasurer; and Janet Campbell, Sec- retary. In the middle of October, we held our first social event of the year, the Freshman Fall Festival. At this affair we made school history by being the first freshman class to have a band at their first dance. With the whole-hearted co-opera- tion of the faculty and the entire student body, it was a huge success. We are quite sure that all the freshmen are looking forward to three more successful years at Sayreville High School. 4 67 FRESHMAN OFFICERS COLLEGE COURSE The College Preparatory Course is for those of us who wish to obtain, after graduation from high school, a college education in preparation for more complex and advanced jobs in a variety of fields. The subjects of which it consists are Al- gebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, Chemistry, English, and three foreign languages. It briefs us on what we are heading for in the years ahead at college. Success relies upon our own per- sonal efforts and desires to reach our goals in life. COMMERCIAL COURSE The Commercial Course prepares us for office positions in the business world. The subjects offered are Junior Business Training, Typing, Steno, Bookkeeping, Commercial Law and Salesmanship, and Office Practice. The main subject is Steno, for two years of it miist be passed to receive a diploma as a graduate of the Commercial Course. We, as seniors, receive fifteen weeks of training on a job outside of school, which gives us an opportunity to apply the knowledge and skill we have acquired in preparing for our career as future office workers before actually entering the field. 68 INDUSTRIAL COURSE Those of us who are interested in hand and mechanical work, are encouraged to pursue the Industrial Arts Course. It helps to develop our skills to the point where we can go out into industry and apply them with diligence and per- severance to the best of our ability. We are given a choice of either Wood Shop or Metal Shop both of which may be taken during our four years of high school if we so desire to take them. With both of these subjects, drafting is also in- structed. GENERAL COURSE Available for those of us who, when we enter high school, are undecided about our future ca- reers or positions in life, is the General Course. It is designed to give us a general knowledge of any subject which we might choose. Usually, after a year or two, one particular field becomes our main interest, and we are thus prepared to continue in it after graduation by following this cur- riculum. 69 JUNIOR PLAY CAST. STUDENT COUNCIL Led by Mrs. Marra, advisor, and President Tom Galinski, the Student Council of '56-'57 did much to better conditions at Sayre- ville High School. Some of the dreams of the Student Council realized in this year were: freshmen orientation assemblies to ac- quaint the freshmen with S.H.S., colorful drapes hung in the cafe- teria to brighten the atmosphere at lunch-time, sending two mem- bers to the summer workshop, sponsoring buses to away athletic contests, and putting out questionaires to find the preferences of the students. The Student Council is a great influence for good in S.H.S. and did much to fulfill the desires and needs of the students. 72 Officers, left to right: Treasurer, Jon Herrel; Secretary, Phyllis Zonkowski; Vice President, Susan Phillips; President, Thomas Galinski. The editor and staff are chosen each spring, and they are busy from September until early June, when the final edition is published. The fine guidance which Mrs. Pfeiffer provided did much toward winning Echo-Lites second place in the Columbia Press Rating for 1956. The Echo-Lites is published five times a year, and each time it is received with great enthusiasm. Wonderful co-operation, a lot of hard work and new blue and white satin uniforms highlighted the '56-'57 edition of the Sayreville High twirlers. Starting way back in the summer months, the squad worked together to master new steps and maneuvers. Their efforts, along with the smart uniforms, produced one of the best looking and snappiest squads the school has ever had. Under the name of Contemporary Literature, the group was formed to acquaint the students with important literature of our times and also serve as a background for future work in college. During the course of the school year the students were assigned dif- ferent phases of work evolving around the literary field. Intensive research was done for our booklets, essays, critiques, and lengthy reports. We also compiled a constant reading list and during the last half of the year, the entire class undertook the writing of a short story. Under the tutelage of Mrs. Parnell, the members of Contemporary Literature gained a great amount of writing and reading experience which we are sure will be a great help to them in the future. 76 Introducing SPORTS hh First row, left to right: E. The 1956 Bombers .were a team hit hard by graduation, injuries, and bad marks. However, un- der the tutelage of Mr. Counsman, the boys played their hearts out and came up with the first winning season in several years. Their record read five wins afid four defeats. The Bombers started out very well, winning their first three games. They beat Our Lady of the Valley, Red Bank Catholic, and South Plainfield, each by a large margin. Then came disaster. Traditional rivals, Carteret, Saint Peter's, and Highland Park, and Bayville Regional set back the Bombers four times in succession. S.H.S. was defeated each time by only six points, with the exception of Saint Peter's, who beat them by thirteen. However, the Bombers bounced back and beat Metuchen and Rumson in their last two game to give the Sayreville High School football team its first winning season in four years. S.H.S. can be proud, not only because of its winning rec- ord, but even more because of the fine sportsman- ship the team showed, both on the field and off. Eddie Paprota leads the way for John Dzergowski against South Plainfield. Reess throws another T.D. pass. 79 BASKETBALL The Sayreville High School Bombers this year enjoyed one of the best regular seasons in the past decade. Compiling an eighteen and two record, the Bombers turned in a fine season not only rec- ord-wise, but in the sense of the spirit,of fair play and exuberant school spirit. The season was highlighted by the performance of one Ronald Kuran, who became the first Bomber in the history of the school to pile up a total of more than one thousand points. The red- headed whiz ended his brilliant high school career with a total of thirteen hundred points and averaged about twenty-four points per game this year. Coach Gutkowski’s boys turned in a fine season's work, being turned back only by Carteret and St. Peter's in the regular season and beating each of these teams previous to their setbacks. The only sad note which dims the light of a brilliant season is the fact that in the first game of the Group II tournament the Bombers were edged by a strong Ewing Township team to end their hopes for a Central Jersey Championship. The whole squad is to be congratulated on their fine team play, sportsmanship, and fight throughout the entire campaign. i s 80 BASKETBALL COACHES. Left to right: Mr. H. Dill, freshman coach; Mr. J. Battle for the rebound during intramural basketball. Competition was keen and competitive spirit strong during the intra- mural sports program this year. There were three sports which were in- cluded: touch football, basketball, and softball. In all three areas there were two tournaments, a senior and junior division in each. The entire in- tra-mural sports program was under the excellent supervision of Mr. John Wortley and Mr. Homer Dill, our gym teachers. The teams in the senior basketball division were coached by varsity basketball players. The remain- ing varsity players were referees as were the varsity football players dur- ing the football tournament. The basketball tournament was topped off by a game between the senior champions and all-stars. The entire intra- mural program was a thorough success. 84 Try for a touchdown in intramural football action. THE CHEERLEADERS The cheerleaders, with their advisor, Mrs. Fehrle, can be seen at every basket- ball and football game, leading the students in cheers and promoting school spirit. Cheerleading is one of the most popular activities among the girls and each spring a large group go out and try to make the squad.- Their personalities, looks, and scho- lastic grades, as well as cheerleading ability, are the basis for the selection of the new cheerleaders, and they are then trained by the present cheerleaders. We are especially proud of this year's cheering squad for having won the ’ Best Cheering Squad trophy during the Jay Vee tournament at Perth Amboy. 85 Intramural Basketball GIRLS' SPORTS This year, Mrs. Fehrle, gym instructor, conducted volleyball, basketball, and soft- ball tournaments.
