HIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL FRANK S. WALK, JR. to THE cLAss or 1959: ' The years you have spent in the Sayre Schools have been happy years. The times have been both exciting and challenging. You are now products of the great American Public School System. Your school is as proud of you as you are proud of the school. As we listen to the critics of our schools, let us remind them that this American system of education which they criticize is the same one from which came the people who built the first atomic bomb, who flew the first airplane, who launched the first atomic submarine, who led the world in thermonuclear experiments, who de- veloped mass industrial production of automobiles, bathtubs, and telephones, and who, by the way, gave the world sulfa drugs, terramycin and the Salk vaccine. As we face the present challenge in education, we know full well that this is no time for a business-as-usual attitude. Nor is it a time for an abrupt upheaval or complete reorganization of our balanced program of educa- tion for all. The foundation of our educational system, built through generations of experience, is a balanced program of education in all disciplines of learning. Our system of education seeks to develop citizens who can make intelligent choices in a free society. We shall need mathematicians and scientists to explore new frontiers, business and labor leaders who can make our eco- nomic system work, legal minds and public administrators who are honest and can operate a government of free men in a complex technological age, and doctors and nurses for health of body and mind. We shall need musi- cians, ministers, artists, poets and novelists who can serve the spiritual and esthetic aspirations of a free people. And above all, we need qualified educators to teach all people who will enter these callings. This is the real chal- lenge to education today. X I W 1 Q '

SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS A school yearbook records many of the school activities. It records the very things that are eventually termed memories. However, yearbooks have difficulty revealing the characteristics of each and every individual. Yet, as one considers his accomplishments, he realizes that they are effected because of certain habits, attitudes and ideals. This country is placing more and more emphasis on the educational program. To meet this demand, your school has endeavored to provide you with the type of training that is basically needed for your further development. Science, mathematics, languages, the arts have all been available to you because the individuals in your com- munity, the taxpayers, vvish to provide the best for their young citizens. We represent but one community in our great United States of America. As young men and young vvomen are trained throughout the world, we in the United States can look with pride on our educational program, for it not only provides the opportunity for all to complete the high school curriculum, but it further provides opportunity for people who endeavor to guide our youth in the development of their habits, attitudes and ideals. May your characteristics be such that as you take your place in our adult life, you will contribute of your time, talents, and money so that we shall always have men and women of the highest ideals who are so needed to keep our country strong. 9f JW H. AUSTIN SNYDER 6
