Kast, whose untiring efforts for a better Sayre High School will long be remembered. During his twenty-three years of devoted service, of giving advice, and of patient guidance, he enjoyed the respect and friendship of all. Four i-fl BOARD OF EDUCATIO Sealed: Mr. Harold Deubler, Mr. Frank Cichocki, Mr. James Lynch, Mr. joseph Garfield, Mr. Paul Shedden, Mr. Samuel Kresge. Slanding: Mr. Radford Hamer, Mr. Donald Hicks, Mr. Thomas Higley, Mr. William Johnston, Mr. Milford Farr. Alzrenl: Mr. William Griswold, Mr. james Presher, Mr. Clarence Farr. The Board of Education is the body which serves to govern the many affairs of the Sayre school system. It consists of three elected assemblages-the directors of the Sayre Area joint High School, the board members of the Sayre Area Schools, and the rep- resentatives of the Sayre Borough School District, the Executive Committee being composed of representatives of each of the three groups. Of the Sayre Area Joint School directors, seven come from Sayre with two from each of the other districts which include South Waverly Borough, Athens Township, and Litchfield Township. Sayre schools are in the hands of very capable men who spend much time and energy in upholding Sayre's fine school program. ff 4 Five 3 il? .af , N, 1 5 FFR , .gr Yi QQ if ix 1 19 .4 A I2 Qin :gf yn W A . 2 215:14-1, , V i L5AA , Q Z t f q , 1 W - 1 f .J -jg 1, W- 2,74Wsk-w?1.1L.51ggij5, 51' . :E w.2w,fgNw1e-1-V.: :p,:SQfff.5wgxW3f.q1, 7 A ,. 0 F nw- .. , ig3SfvQgs1f,,1..,.. 7 - ,,i. . MAJORETTES The Senior Band under the baton of Nelson Sickler is one of the largest student organizations in the school. Membership is open to all those musically inclined. During football season the band practiced many hours to get in top shape to entertain during half time. The Drum and Bugle Corps, composed of extremely talented band members, was a big feature at the home football games. After football season, the band turned to playing the lighter and more classical type of music. Practice was held activities period on Tuesdays and Thursdays. During that time the band rehearsed diligently in preparation for the annual spring concert in March. Smnding: Field, Patsy, Tyson, Osborne, Northrup. Mag- azine selling proved very profitable in years before and so was continued this year. The magazine project could not have been carried out successfully except for the help of the fine officers: President, Linda Spaulding, Vice President, Elizabeth Taylor, and Secretary-Treasurer, Paul Kaplan. The band played for many civic programs, including the Hal- loween and Memorial Day Parades and the dedication of Guthrie Square. During these parades the band displayed fine musical ability as well as marching skill. The annual band picnic enjoyed by all members was the big social event of the year. Senior Band has proved very rewarding and enjoyable to all who have participated in it. Firrz row: Reynolds, Gorman, Welty, Ferguson, Johnston, Willson, Taylor. It is classified as a club, and all those who receive instrumental instruction through the school are required to join this organization. The band practices every Wednesday during activities period. At this time a music program is prepared to be presented prior to the Senior Band concert in March. The primary function of this group is to give the members experience playing as a group and to prepare them for the challenge of Senior Band. As a student continues to play in Junior Band he not only gains self-confidence in his ability to play but also new methods and techniques of playing. Seventy-two SPORTS V '1' ' vv W ' i l . The second half was all Sayre. Jerry Pedini went over from the one and the Redskins almost scored again. The final was 12-7. The next week was the same story. Wyalusing grabbed an early score. But two long runs by Dido Brown gave Sayre a 12-7 halftime lead. The second half saw Pedini make big gains and score twiceg Ken Deubler ran a punt back 60 yards to score. The Rams also scored once to make the count 31-15. With three first-stringers injured, Sayre traveled to Scranton Central. The powerful Eagles showed no mercy as they rolled up a 52-12 score. Sa'yre's TD's came in the first half, which ended 26-12. Tom Flynn scored once and passed to jack Nittinger for the other score. The game with Athens was a nightmare. Playing at home for the last time, the Redskins couldn't do anything right as the Bulldogs took a 21-O 'victory. 'Athens scored on a long runback with an intercepted pass, a safety, a Campbell neatly intercepts a Waverly pass. lgng P355 Play, and another long 1-un, The following week at Troy, Sayre won a 13-12 thriller. Troy put up a terrific battle and took a 12-O lead. Then Sayre started to roll. Tom Flynn passed to jack Nittinger for six, then with one and one-half minutes to go, Flynn hit Bob Sutherland in the end zone. For the vital extra point, Flynn passed again, this time to Ken Hildebrandt. Because of the flu epidemic, the Forty Fort game was cancelled and the Waverly game postponed. The 'Skins' next action was in Towanda, and they took home a 28-13 win. Dido Brown scored first, but Towanda matched it. Then Flynn scored a long run and'Pedini hit paydirt from the nine. In the second half Brown scored on a long run to end Sayre's scoring. In the final game, Sayre played at Waverly, and played tremendous ball. In the first six minutes, Dido Brown scored on runs of 50 and 24 yards to give Sayre a 12-0 lead. Sayre held the Wolverines until the last minute, when they scored on a long pass to make it 12-6. A bad start cost Sayre the game at johnson City. The Wildcats cashed in on every chance to take a 71-52 win. The 'Skins dropped two to a powerful Binghamton Central club, 73-56 here and 56-53 in Binghamton. Again, a poor start cost Sayre a win in Binghamton. Sayre got back on the winning trail at Troy with an east 51-27 victory. Then, in a thriller at home, Sayre smothered Wyalusing 69-49. Against arch-rival Athens, the ,Skins' shooting was fantastic. They held a 58-31 lead at halftime and coasted to an 85-64 win. The hot streak continued against Towanda as the 'Skins rolled up 95 to Towanda's 68. Troy visited Sayre and surprised everybody. After 5 periods, the count was 40-39, Sayre. But the Sayre team found the range in the last quarter and pulled away to win 68-52. A trip to Williamsport found the flashy Million- aires playing a great brand of ball to win 84-65. Along with Canton's defeat, the ,Skins' 87-71 pasting of Wyalusing moved Sayre into a tie for first in the league. In the return with Waverly, the Redskins had the range again as they took an early lead and rolled on to a 92-65 win. In a return game at Sayre, Athens fell 77-60. After a shaky start, the Redskins came on strong to win going away. Scanlin shoots a jump shot against Canton. Seventy-eight Bill Scanlin connects for another long drive. Fin! row: Parks, Solomon, Pietro. BA EBALL The 1957 edition of the Sayre Redskins baseball team was the best in several years. The over-all record of five wins, six losses and a tie that wasn't played off is misleading, two of the losses, to Athens and Towanda, were extra inning games. Indeed, the second Wyalusing game decided the championship of the RTL. That game itself was close until the last two innings, when Wyalusing pulled away to win. Sayre's catcher, John QYogij Carroll, was hon- ored when he received the I-R Sportsmanship award for baseball. This team lost only three men, so in 1958 the team should be even stronger. Second row: Newman, Keene, Scanlin, Mandarano, Brehm, Maxim, Flynn, Stravyes, Benjamin, Carroll, Collins. Third row: Chacona, Noone, Nobles, Schmidt, House, Deubler, Ciavardini, Gleockner, Nittinger, Coach Hunt. Eighty TRACK Sayre's track team got their season off to a good start by defeating Troy and Towanda in a three- cornered meet, scoring 58 points to 56 for Troy and 30 for Towanda. But then the Athens Powerhouse came to Sayre and walked away with an SQM, to 35V5 victory. After an easy win over Wyalusing, Sayre was second in the Valley meet. Then the Red- skins walloped Waverly 75 to 34. In the last three meets, the Sayre' Invitational, District Four, and Bradford County meet, Sayre finished second to Athens. The high point of the season was in the Bradford County meet, when the Sayre mile relay team beat the favored Athens quartet by two-tenths of a second in a thrilling race. Attending the state meet with Coach Frank Downing were Bud and Dido Brown, Mike Kennedy, jerry Pedini, Mickey Potter, Red Vail, Bill Sjostrom, Bernard Dugan, Paul Comerinsky, Charlie Wells, Paul Hutsick, and Larry Parsons. One thing the Redskins could have used, but didn't get, in their second wrestling season, was a little bit of old- fashioned luck. The men of coach Carl Meyer performed quite well. Injuries and the rather strange happening that Sayre lost three meets by a total of six points cost Sayre a better record. Sayre visited Towanda and took a pasting 40-6. The Red- skins hosted Troy and smothered them 30-17. Then came two heart-breakers. The grapplers from S-R-U upset the 'Skins 27-24, and the powerful Green Hornets from Wellsboro finally took a 26-25 squeaker. The Redskins hosted S-R-U, and really turned the tables, blasting them 33-6. The Warriors from Canton eked out a 27-25 win. Sayre got back on the winning side by defeating Wyalusing 34-13. The league champions, Towanda, came to Sayre and left with a 35-11 win. In the most exciting match of the season, Sayre and Waverly battled to a 25-25 draw. The 'Skins smacked Troy again 36-13. Wellsboro beat Sayre 32-6, winning all but two matches. Sayre moved into second place in the RTL league by defeat- ing Canton 23-19. Kneeling: McWatters, Carroll, Diehl, Kennedy, Lattimer, Anthony. Books are the tangible symbol of our years in school. But there are so many intangibles-the fellowship of our classmates, the enjoyment of the varied activities, and the attainment of knowledge. Memories of our years at Sayre High School crowd into our minds-the first few years of perplexity followed by the maturing years in which we came to know ourselves and our ambitions. And now as we approach graduation lwe remember most vividly the crowded and frantic days that we experienced asseniors, the unexpected vacations because of epidemic and snowstorms, the exultation over a championship basketball team, the bonds of friendship with our foreign students, the fads and the follies, the never-ending struggle with homework. Commencement will find us going our separate ways but we shall cherish the memory of all that we have shared, together with the realization of the opportunities our alma mater has given us. This 1958 Sayrenade cannot bring back all that has passed before. But perhaps in the days ahead it will, in some measure, add a warmth to our fading memories.
