For we're all staunch and loyal And we're each the other's friend, We will stick by our colors Until this life shall end, So while we're together Let us give a ringing cheer For the praise of Alma Mater, For our Sayre High School, so dear. Highlighting the evening of May l4 was the crowning of Phoebe Dickson as Queen of May by Charles Adam. Focal point of the arrangement was the Queen's Court, centered in front of the grandstand and beautifully decorated with a variety of spring flowers. Attending Miss Dickson in the court were girls from the senior, iunior, and sopho- more classes. Chosen by the vote of their class- mates were Barbara Draper, Joanne Griffith Alice Palipkonich, Marion Vanderpool, Isa- belle Adam, Janet Lehr, Sally Jo Krotzer, and Barbara Taylor. The crown bearer was Arthur Price and the flower girls were Donna Eldred, Kathleen Martini, Patti Rae Donlin, and Bonnie Wilcox--all fourth grade students. WQITLLQI' 1. Q l li ,nv ERIK LEIDZEN 5 ill Sayre High was signally honored this year in being chosen as host school for the Eastern All State Band. The three-day festival got under way February fifth with 179 band members from T55 eastern Pennsylvania schools converging on Sayre to be entertained in 89 private homes throughout the town. Accompanying the stu- dents were eighty music directors who spent their time in group meetings of various sorts. Mr. Erik Leidzen, noted conductor and composer and a native of Stockholm, Sweden as guest conductor directed the band in a program of music ranging from classical to swing. The high point during the three concerts which played to 2400 persons as well as aradioaudience was probably the concluding number, South Pacific as arranged by Mr. Leiclzen. The band members wore the uniforms of their respective schools, presentinga very colorful picture on the huge stage which had been constructed especially for this occasion. 54 Qf le .Side Hand This festival was the first state band meet ever held in a small town, and band members, direc- tors, ancl officials were profuse in their praise for the hospitality, organization and co-operation which marked this festival as one of the Finest ever held. In addition to the three concerts and the broadcast, several visiting band members participated in an in- formal radio program over WATS . Various souvenirs, a dance after Friday's concert and a banquet Saturday were other features con- tributing tothe success of this 27th Eastern All State Band Festival. Being a wallflower, Hilde- garde decided that by chance she might get a bid for the big dance if she won the debate on the temperance issue. Her speech was given so dramatically that everyone in town believed her father was the drunkard. Mr. Dolson nearly lost his job when Mr. Shermer, his employer heard about the debate. Mrs. Dolson lent a helping hand by arranging a date for Hildegarde with Freddie Shermer, the banker's son. Hildegarde was mortified at the thought of going with Freddie because he was the only boy in school who had to wear knickers. She was even more ashamed when her brothers and friends started teasing her about her big date. The whole issue was finallysettled and the big surprise came when Freddie appeared at the door for Hildegarde in his new suit--with long pantsl CAST Hildegarde . . . Barbara Green Mr. Dolson . . The scene is the home of Dean Elbert Meeker of Davenport College for Women. Trudy Meeker, the dean's charming daughter, is attracted to Doug, their boarder and the college instructor of psychology, almost immediately upon his arrival. Doug suddenly announces his engagement to Gloria Gilbert, a young college siren when she threatens to tell everyone that he is a wrestler. Then Mel White, a newspaper reporter and Trudy's friend, uncovers evidence indicating that Doug is the leader ofa daring gang of bank thieves using the college as a hideout and has him arrested. When this happens, Willa Davenport, the founder and benefactress of the college withdraws her support and it looks as though the college will have to close its doors. Just prior to his arrest, Doug has been writing a paper on the psycopathic behavior of aborigines, and Sue has been writing a story entitled, l Shot My Husband in the Middle of Out Honeymoon. When she can't find her story, Sue immediately suspects that Doug has stolen it. After more investigation Mel discovers that Doug had nothing to do with the robberies and he is released. Doug now breaks his engagement to Gloria and gives up wrestling for good. Willa Davenport, upon receiving a letter in which she learns that Doug was awarded a prize for a story entitled I Shot My Husband in the Middle of Our Honeymoon decides to continue supporting the college. Later it is learned that by mistake Doug submitted the wrong story to the contest, CAST Flossie . Patricia Howey Lois Meeker ..... . . . . Betty Driscoll Sue Meeker . SIMS' SPUHTS ,gn .griencffg r I A 76 Sfirre gxcifemenf FOOTBALL The Sayre High Red- skins underwent a fairly .A -- A successful gridiron season. With an experienced back- field and a green line, CoachGlen Haggerty's de- termined and high-spirited Red and Blue terminated the season with a record of threewins, five losses, and one tie. To open the gridiron season, the squad was the X guest of the strong Forty y Fort team. Although Sayre fought its way for two i touchdowns, the hosts defeated Sayre 27 to I2. Only a small crowd nirned out to cheer the Redskins on in their first home game and first victory. It was a I4 to I2 win over Dickson City. Frank Durizch tallied the touchdowns for Sayre with Joe McCabe in the quarterback slot calling si nals. g October third brought a strong and experienced hall club from Jessup. The powerful Green handed Sayre their second loss of the season with a score of IQ to 13. Tom Page and Frank Durizch did most of the ball handling for Sayre. The following week brought the sporting rivalry between the Redskins and the fighting Athens Bulldogs. Sayre was the guest of their southern rival for the most exciting game of the year. Both teams played an excellent game, hard and determined. The finalscorewasaig to I3 deadlock. Tom Page and Frank Durizch each sparked the Redskins to a touch- down. Charlie Baker possibly saved the game for Sayre when he converted the one extra point. Waverly invaded Sayre for another gridiron thriller on October IO. The Sayre Redskins took an early lead when Page made an 86 yard jaunt good for a touchdown. The Wolverines then tallied two touchdowns to put themselves out in front. Ona spectacular catch of a pass from Joe McCabe, Tom Page raced for another touchdown, the play covering 62 yards. McCabe plunged over for the extra point. Waverly, however, scored twice more and converted once, making the final score a 25 to I3 victory for the Wolverines. Waverly was the 1952 Valley - Towanda champion. Sayre renewed its rivalry with Milton High School after having played the last game in I948 to a 6 to 6 tie. This year Sayre broke the game wide open for their second win, the game ending in a 25 - 7 victory. Again Tom Page led the Red and Blue in the scoring, his first being 65 yards on a pass from McCabe, and the second a 59 yard dash. Merrill, Durizch, and Wright drove the ball up to the one foot line where McCabe took it over. Durizch made the extra point and later came back to make Sayre's fourth T.D. 77 ur oung ,airifecl fayem The following week Sayre bowed to the powerful Black Knights from Towanda. In this game Sayre received their worst defeat of the seasonwitha score of 39 to 6. Frank Durizch made the touch- down for Sayre on a 26 yard dash. Corning Free Academy delivered another crushing defeat to the Redsklnsghowever, the first half turned out to be exciting and close. C,F,A. made one T.D. and Sayre missed three when they were in close scoring position. In the second half Corning broke the game wide open as they tallied three more T. D. s and a safety. Sayre made a score early in the fourth quarter when McCabe pa sed to Merrill in a spectacular play. The final score was 27 to 6. 78 glxkigifecl a fo in .L The last gridiron game and third victory of the season was with Troy. Both teams made their highest score of the season in this game, Sayre with 41 points and Troy with 20 points. High scoring honors went to Tom Page with three T. D. 's and four conversions. One was a 68 yard punt return, another on a 52 yard pass play, and the third one a nine-yard plunge. The other touchdowns were a 62 yard sprint by Lyle Merrill, Frank Durizch on a II yard run, and Anson Wright on a short pass from Joe McCabe, 1' , ffm:w'i',..f' N ' L . Wag: W-1 .Vw . ,,f: . The 1952-53 edition of the Sayre Redskins' basketball squad proved itself to be one ofthe fastest and most aggressive teams in the area. Although handicapped by a lack of height they produced a record to be proud of. The Redskins opened the season with a win over Newark 'Valley in a thrilling spe cta cle . Journeying next to Waverly the confident Redskins JUNIOR VARSITY were set back by the sparkling Arcesi, Van Allen, West, Carpenter, Snyder, DeKay, Wolverines to the tune of 91 to 34. Mon' Baker' White' Cole' On Friday of the same week the boys dropped a close one to Wellsboro, on the latter's court, 63 to 60. The next contest found the Redskins hosting a fine Owego team, and again the Redskins came up on the short end of the score. The never-say-die spirit showed up the following week when the Sayre boys took consecutive games from LeRaysville 62 - 51, and Canton 49-41. A return game with Towanda proved to be a thriller with Sayre being edged 55-53. The succeeding week found Sayre taking two Roosevelt Trail games from Canton and Wyalusing, 51-43 and 41-35 respectively. Sparked by Dick Brennan's 15 points, the Redskins, showing their best form of the season, satisfied a frenzied capacity crowd as they outplayed Athens in every department for a42-36 triumph. The young squad composed mostly of juniors was- led by the sharp-shooting of Bob Farrell and clever ball-handling of Tommy Page. Making his debut at Sayre, Coach Cal Welliver guided the Redskins through a most successful season. 80 8 Ll mfA600I'6bl'l6lt26! lain l V - a 'L 81 ibidlgfa ying WCA gfkcfiuenedd v, - .O +- -,,,- , , U I ' a 5 l O 82 Y!!!-pr- 0 Rubee! .giaorf l l TRAC K l952 saw the resumption of track and field events at Sayre High School after a lapse of ten years. Largely be- cause of their speed on the cinder path and Russ Montz's proficiency in field events, the Redskins easily defeated Owegog however, Sayre's inexperience was evidentOS their traditional foes from Athens and Waverly over- powered them . Coach Thoren had a couple of speedy boys - Russell Montz and John Mullaly. ln the Athens meet, Russ won the high jump as well as the broad jump with ease, set- ting a new broad jump record of 19 feet,6 inches. John passed all others to take the mile sprint in 5 minutes, one second. Placing first in several events, Dick Jones contributed greatly in the i952 meets. Against Owego, Dick Jones captured the lOO yard dash while the relay team of Regan Dov enport, Horniak, and Montz won its event. Despite this severe handicap Coach Weiss put a team on the field that was a credit to the school both in their athletic ability and good sportsmanship. The not very impressive season record of 8 losses and no victories can by no means tell the story of the spunky Redskin team, Among the losses were some hard ones which could have been pulled out ofthe fire by a base hit when there were two on -- or by that third strike going across the plate.
