Although twelve Redskin gridders played their final game against Troy, Coach Ksionzyk concentrated his efforts on giving his squad experience for the future. When the season ended Sayre had to be content with a record of two wins, six losses, and one cancellation, caused by bad weather conditions. The opening game was played with Jessup High School. The Green NVave sported a strong. well' balanced team, and easily took the rookie Redskins, 38-O. Dick Jones. All-Valley quarterback, led the Sayre attack as he so capably did throughout the se-ason. The game marked the debut of freshmen Tontmy Page and Frankie Durizch, two backfield demons. 7 The following week, Sayre soundly trimmed Dickson City. Dapper Dick Jones again star- red, running 70 and 75 yards for two T. D.'s and converting four extra point attempts. Frankie Durizch scored a touchdown. and a pass from Joe McCabe to Anson Wright was good for yet another. A happy crew of Red- skins left the Lockhart Street Stadium the night of September 22. Final score: Sayre 40, Dick- son City 13. Forty Fort presented a sparkling aggregation headed by a flashy back, Arden Llewellyn. Sayre had no defense for their wide-open, pass- ing game. When the visitors' attack stalled in the last half, the combination of Dick Jones and Tom Page went to work, and between them scored all 18 points in the 42-18 defeat. The season reached its climax with the Athens game. The Bulldogs, the Val1ey's 1951 champions, took Sayre 25-0. After an inspired first half on Sayre's part, the Athenians poured on their power, depth, and finesse before 5,000 amazed fans. Jones and Page again led the Red- skins in a game marked by very rugged line play. ' if 45 4... if BENNETT ENNIS FERRIS 2 Waverly High School played host to the Redskins on October 12 and came out on top of a 26-7 score. Dick Jones directed the team in the T-formation and the new spread-pass formation. Charley Baker smashed over from his fullback post to register the Redskins' only touchdown against the northern rivals. The following week S, H. S. ventured to Jersey Shore. In a wide open game, Sayre took to the air. utilizing the new spread-pass forma- tion. A button-hook pass from Dick Jones to Joe Morningstar clicked consistently. But the Redskins were also riddled with injuries: in fact, four men-Jones, Morningstar, Wright, and Merrill, played the entire game at their backfield posts, Sayre lost a well-played game to the Susquehanna League Champions, 33-0. x y - , -, its ' fufjyg S Q E. The game scheduled for November 3 with Olyphant was canceled by mutual agreement because of an all-night snowstorm. In the final game of the season, only 500 people turned out to see the Redskins rout a defenseless Troy' High School team. 47-6. Led by Frankie Durizch who scored three times, S. H. Basketball Basketball at Sayre High underwent a year of rebuilding during its 1951-52 season. While Coach Thoren gave detailed tutoring to his strong junior varsity. he also saw his five spirited seniors play their hearts out every Tues- day and Friday night in an attempt to bring fame to S. H. S. The slap-happy season marked the return of the Redskins to the Roosevelt Trail League. The varsity, captained by' Dick Jones. finished the league season with a 3 win and 7 loss record-good enough for a fifth place ranking in the six-team R. T. L. Let's take a look at a typical game and see how the varsity worked. On February 25 Wyalusing was at Sayre for a league game. The Redskins won the game from the outside with the little men hitting consistently with sets or jump push shots. Bob Farrell, Jack Ennis, Dick Brennan and of course Dick Brimmer, the on man of the night who amassed 23 points for his finest game of the year, handled this cie- partment. The under the bucket game was handled by Dick Lehman and Dick Jones, the latter Sayre's most consistent scorer. In this game, as in most others, Coach Thoren in- serted a J. V. member ,for experience. The outcome? Sayre won 54-53 in one of the top thrillers of the 1952 season. 'T -? ...sa- VARSITY Brimmer. Wright. Canfield, Lehman. Coach Thoren, Jones, Bennett, Ennis, Farrell, In inter-valley competition Sayre was outclassed by two Hne teams. The Waverly Wolverines sporting one of the finest squads seen in the valley, won the Southern Counties League title as well as the mythical valley championship. Their machine defeated Sayre twice. Much tribute must be given to a fine Athens squad. The Bulldogs, partly by virtue of two wins over the Redskin realm won the Roosevelt Trail league with a 10-0 record. He ran a team composed of a couple spunky little keystone men, Second Baseman Joe Morningstar and Shortstop Dick Roberts, a clutch-hitting rookie, Paul Flynn. and a couple of game pitchers, Bob Newman and Johnny Casterline. Catcher Mike Young's two-run single in the last inning beat Towanda, 6-5, in the first game of the season also highlighted by a Redskin double play, Roberts to Morningstar to Flynn. Sayre bowed in the second meeting with Towanda, 12-l l, despite a thrilling last inning rally. Sayre swept the two game set with Ulster, 16-5 and 7-6, with two route- going jobs by' Bob Newman, V In competition for the valley championship Sayre showed a l-3 record. Johnny Casterline beat Waverly, 8-7 on May 1 in the climax of the season, as Sayre rebounded after a six-run first inning by the Wolverines. The valley championship went to Athens High School, who soundly beat Sayre, 15--5 and l 1-2.
