XVe hear so mueh about the destructiveness of the atomic bomb and the possibility of the annihilation of mankind that we forget that we have the tremendous task of lighting ignorance itself. How fortunate it is for us to be a part of a constructive life rather than a destructive one! The seniors, who have made such line contributions to the welfare of the school, are leaving with the privilege of continuing their development in institutions of higher learning or following a vocational livelihood to become an active foree in their various social groups. .Xll will have an opportunity to reflect the background they have received within these walls. Those of us who remain must uphold the fine traditions of former years. NYe must think progressively. XYe must endeavor to weave a pattern of fellowship and racial understanding which will help in a small way to promote an international peacetime program. It is indeed a pleasure to work with such a splendid group of students as represent the Sayre schools. May fortune smile favorably upon the class of 1947. May each have the opportunity to fully live so that our school will continue to take pride in the aecomplislnnents of its alumni. May the passing years reveal this as a better world because of your efforts. H. AUSTIN SNYDER, SIIflz'l'l-IIfc'lIll't'lIf of .S'c'1100l.s'. L' ass library In September, 1944, a group of 97 very frightened students entered their first upstairs home rooms. This was a new and exciting experience for us, the class of '-l7. For three long years we had envied the senior high school students. and at last we were among this superior group. Our sophomore year held much in store for us. At iirst We thought we would never become adjusted, and often wished we were back in junior high school. Finally we became accustomed to all the new teachers and subjects and at last we were on our way. After a month or so of classes we held elections. To us this was a most important and serious affair. After a rather strenuous campaign, we elected our officers, including as president, Paul Stedge, and as vice-president, Charles Meikle. With the assistance of our class advisors, Miss Matanle and Mr. Copp. the class sponsored three dances throughout the year. These were held after football and basketball games. As exams rolled around many of us were afraid we would never make the grade, but most of us did. After our summer vacation we returned to school feeling vastly superior to the new sophomore class. In March we selected our class rings. During May we presented our junior class play entitled Too Many Relatives under the direction of Raymond Hauver. VVe also staged our Brst class prom with the help of our advisors, Miss Matanle and Mrs. Wildrick. The prom proved to be a great success, and was an important social event of the school year. The class officers who had much to do with the success of the prom were President lVilliam Mullaly and Vice-president Clara Miller. During the course of the year we sponsored several informal dances after basketball and football games. Fifty Class History fcontinuedj XVhen we returned to school for our final year. it was with the feeling that we were. at long last. the upper class of the high school. This was the year we had been looking forward to. Our class hadn't dropped too many members along the way, and this year was enlarged by a number of veterans returning to school to complete their high school work. Of these. eleven had served in the Navy. two in the Army. and one in the Marine Corps. Our senior year proved to be the most crowded year we had experienced. Beginning early in the fall we attempted a number of money-raising projects with a view toward publishing a year book. Under the leadership of our class officers we conducted a magazine sales campaign which netted us a good profit. Best salesmen proved to be Virginia Whitney and Theodore Theoharous. In November we presented our senior class play, entitled The Curse of an Aching Heart . This play. directed by Mrs. XVllll1'lCk, was an old time melodrama. and proved to be a great success. Leading our class were Pauline liall as president and liileen McCabe as vice-president. The officers supervised the decoration of the gym for the senior prom which was held in December. This dance was a gala affair and a complete success. The feature of the evening was the coronation of the Snow Queen. Mary lireichbaum. by Arthur Ferris, captain of the football team. Our class was the first in twenty years to publish a year book. This annual meant considerable extra work for the student staff and the teachers who were responsible for the publication. ln this last year our class not only has made up a large part of the athletic teams and the musical organizations, but also has been responsible for greatly improved cheering through the efforts of the senior cheer leaders. In addition the students of our class have assumed the leadership in many clubs. Scholastically our class can be justly proud. as evidenced by our member- ship in the National Honor Society. Our baccalaureate service was held Sunday, June l, with, the seniors attempting to appear dignified in the formality of cap and gown. Commencement followed on June -1-the long-awaited event which had been our goal for twelve years. VVe had fought the good fight, finished the course, and kept the faith . Wie had reached the pinnacle of achievement, and at last the long-coveted diplomas were ours. As we complete the final phases of our high school education, we do so with a deep sense of gratitude to the people of Sayre. the school administration and the teachers who have made possible these profitable, happy, never to be forgotten years at Sayre High. 'lille story revolved around Melody Lane, a lovely young orphan be- friended by Anrelia rXbernathy. XYhile staying at the 4Xbernathy ranch, Melody fell in love with l.ucius iioodenongh, but she dared not reveal her love, for she believed herself married to a villain known as XYindermere l lightower. , Real difficulties arose when llightower visited the ranch posing as an old friend of Mr. Abernathy. A series of Hightowers schemes followed, and although Battle ,Xxe Annie, the local sherill, never did realize her am- bition to capture a criminal, 'Hightower was brought to justice by the hero, l.neius Goodenongh. Windermere admitted the marriage ceremony had been a fake and Melody was not really his wife. Melody's happiness was complete when .Xloysius ,Xbernathy, who had been gone from home many years, returned and claimed Melody as his daughter. This record is a tribute to the school, the players, and the work done by Coach Stephen Sydorak and his able assistant Tom jones. The Sayre squad showed excellent teamwork and played a good, clean, hard type of football. Sayre tool: the lirst game in stride by defeating XYyoming. Following this yietory Sayre met the powerful Milton eleven. This game was doubtless the best one of the year for it afforded all the thrills and excitement ever to be experienced in any game. lt was the Hghting spirit and sheer determina- tion of the Sayre gridmen that gave them a 25 to l9 victory. The Red and Illne staged a great comeback a fter trailing in the first half--a comeback that won't be forgotten by the thrilled Sayre rooters who ,saw the brilliant win.
