If we conquer in our battles, It shall mold our name. High the goal to which she leads us Glorious expands, May we heed her guidance ever, As she nobly stands. If the training, the knowledge, and various abilities of your class and those graduating from our high schools each year could be confined within the territory of the Tussey Mountain Joint Schools for the rest of your lives, the contribution you could make to the progress of this community would be without limit. I must remind you that there will be a difference between your latent ability and your achievement in life. To make your great potentialities become achievements you must work. You did not enter the Tussey Mountain Joint Schools and do twelve years of work, so that you could go through life in a leisurely manner. Society's purpose in giving you an education was to teach you how to work more effectively. I hope that you have achieved this goal. Ralph Waldo Emerson, the great American poet and philosopher, said, Labor is God's education. He only is a sincere learner; he only becomes a master who learns the secret of labor. It does not matter whether you go to col- lege, whether you enter business, or what you select for a career, it is the amount of work you do that will determine your success. Harry H. Alcorn Supervising Principal ration At the present approximately 525 students are attending the Saxton Liberty Junior-Sen- ior High School. Each student is an individual entirely different in every respect from all the others, in fact different from all living species. Aside from your spiritual welfare your individuality should be your most vital concern. Many ideas and practices about which you have studied are universally accepted as worthwhile. These you will accept, bene fitting from the experiences of those who lived be- fore you. Today, there is a growing trend in society to conform. Total acceptance of this idea will mean the eventual disappearance of in- dividual expression. Individuality is the es- sence of democracy. With it we make pro- gress and survive; without it we degenerate and die. Your teachers and I hope very much that the time spent with us has provided oppor- tunities for self development and self ex- pression. G. CLASS HISTORY On that memorable day in September, 1955, the day we entered Saxton Liberty High School, our elementary school days became a memory. Our group of 106 soon was introduced to the problems of finding a suitable routine. Before long we became veterans of the first few days of confusion that all freshmen must experience. In due time our class met under the direction of our class advisers. Miss Winnick and Mr. Dodsop, to elect officers. They were: President, William Axon; Vice-President, Wayne Schenck; Secretary-Treasurer, Donna Baker; Historian, Beth Fluke. Our social event for the year was a skating party held at Martinsburg. On September 4,1956, the sturdiest of us were on hand as eager sophomores, with a backward look of accomplishment at our freshman year. Our group now numbered seventy-seven students, anxious for the education which would promote us to a higher level. When the class held its first meeting on September 20, the following class officers were chosen: President, Larry McCahan; Vice-President, Wayne Schenck; Secretary-Treasurer, Donna Baker; Historian, Elouise Thomas. The class sponsored the Saint Valentine's Day party under the direction of the class advisers, Mr. and Mrs. Witowski. Our junior year proved to be a very eventful one for us. We received our class rings, which we shall always treasure. That year our business activities began with selling refreshments at home games. We were responsible for two social events, a gala Halloween party and the Junior-Senior Prom, held on May 9, 1958, with “Oriental Gardens” as the theme. We shall al- ways cherish fond memories of these occasions. Our class officers this year were: President, Larry McCahan; Vice-President, Wayne Schenck; Secretary-Treasurer, Donna Baker; Historian, Elouise Thomas. Our advisers re- mained the same. When September 1958 came, we began to realize that our school days were few. We immediatley began making plans for our yearbook. At our first meeting we elected class officers: President, Larry McCahan; Vice-President, Gary McGraw;Secretary-Treasurer, Donna Baker; Historian, Elouise Thomas. Mr. and Mrs. Witowski continued to be our helpmates. In the spring we took the annual educational trip to Washington D. C., an experience we shall never forget. On May 17, Baccalaureate Service was held and on May 19, Commencement. Although we shall greatly miss our experiences at Saxton Liberty, we can look to a brighter future because of them. September 12 was perhaps the high tide of the year for us, for that was the day we re- cieved our precious class rings. Our first class meeting was held September 18, at which time we elected our class officers. During the long autumn we sold refreshments at football games, took orders for Christ- mas cards, and secured magazines subcriptions with the aid of our advisers: Mr. Treasure, Mr. Shoenfelt, and Mr. Clapper. October 24, we sponsored the annual Halloween Party which was, as usual, a gay, rollicking affair. With the merry month of May came the climax of our activities in this busy year, our gift to the seniors — the Prom. Just as we planned and worked for, it was a never-to- be-forgotten occasion. 38 u n ion Adolphson, G. Albright, L. Bailey, P, Baker, R. Barto, B, Barton, B. Black, A. Blair, E. Under the supervision of Mr. Gates, Mr. Lewis, and Mr. Mullen we met as a class on October 17. In that meeting we chose our officers: President, Larry Wyles; Vice President, Dick Howells; Secretary, Sharon Reed; Treasurer, Becky Burkett; Historian, Rebecca Smith. By September 2, 1958,the class had dwindled to 106 eager persons. We met September 26 to elect our officers: President, Dick Howells, Vice President, Larry Wyles; Secretary, Lonna Neville; Treasurer, Judy Schenck; Historian, Carol Snyder. Our social function of the year was the Valentine party. It is to Mr. Haushalter, Mr. Lewis, and Mr. Mullen that we are indebted for guidance this year. 43 o mores Abbott, D. Adolphson, M. Alcorn, C. Our first class meeting, held October 17, was for the purpose of electing the following class officers: President, Ronnie Baker; Vice President, Sam Cessna; Secretary, Pat Young; Treasurer, Dan Brumbaugh; Historian, Sally Wyles. With the help of our advisers, Miss McCahan, Mrs. Ritchey, and Mr. Donald Brumbaugh, we held our first social function in the spring. The Sadie Hawkinses really made it an occasion to be long remembered. By this time the word timid did not apply. 48 men Altobelli, T, Baker, L. Baker, R. Becker, G. Berger, J. Bowser, M. Brennen, H. Although faced with the most difficult factor of all, in- experience, our boys, under Coach Shoenfelt, improved stead- ily throughout the season and overcame a bad start, losing three out of the first four games, to have a good winning season. The ’ Cats won a berth in the PIAA district 5 Class B playoffs. Before falling to Everett they won eight straight in the Bedford County League. Our boys were the best- balanced and highest-scoring team in the Huntingdon-Bedford County area, averaging well over sixty points per game. The main factors in our winning season were the team spirit and the never-quit attitude of every member of the squad. We’re proud of them. Managers: Gary Seager, Arthur Rankin. Bai.Latl The 1958 edition of the Saxton-Liberty baseball team under Coach Hoover posted a record of three wins and four losses in an abbreviated season. The Wildcats seemed to be plagued with bad breaks in the important games but displayed good sportsmanship and excellent play as they tried their best for our school. The team competed in the Bedford County League; and, although the boys didn’t win the championship, they had a lot to say about who did. Their victories were over Everett, Chestnut Ridge, and Hyndman, the eventual winner. The team had quite a few under-classmen on it and that fact seems to point to a good season in 1959. 75 atron i Saxton First National Bank Dr. Charles C. Barton R. W.
