Ok. Block She Slnnuaf Presented by She Senior Cfa J A of Saxton Liberty High School Saxton, Pennsylvania 1958 If this 1958 Block preserves the memories and recollections of our school, our fellow students, and our teachers, then it has indeed accomplished its purpose. In grateful recognition of their work for Saxton Liberty High School and the ideals to which they have inspired us, we, the Senior Class, dedicate this, the 1958 Block, to our faculty. We hope that it will express in some measure our appreciation for their unstinting efforts. The success that we have attained is largely due to their guidance. As their influence is reflected on these pages, so it will forever remain stamped in pur minds. Our -JMma Wlater Time may ebb and we may wander. Far o’er distant ways. But our thoughts shall e’er be winging To our high school days. Saxton-Liberty, this forever. Shall our motto be. Her bright banner waves before us Spreading loyalty. Schoolmates, comrades, friends together, Joined in happy throng, Endless praise we give our high school, May she flourish long. Victory waits to greet us. ADVISOR Mr. Dodson CO-EDITORS James Barto Shelby Weaver 8U Staff The senior class publishes a yearbook each year. It is entitled “The Block. The purpose of The Block is to keep a record of all the important activities and events which happen during the school year. All Block staff members are seniors and are chosen by the Block staff advisor. Members are chosen because of their willingness to work and their good scholastic records. The four key positions are advisor, co-editors, business manager, and photographic chairman. It takes all members working together to publish “The Block.” 5 FRONT ROW: (L to R) W. Fleegle, B. The potentiality which you represent cannot be estimated. There has never been a time in world history when men and women of all nations, colors, creeds and religions had more need to reason together. Tomorrow’s citizens must use their intelligence and the resources at hand so that all the world’s people can enjoy a life of abundance and make this plenty a pattern for peace. You are at a point in man’s travels where it can be clearly seen that unless ways are found to stay the hands of those who might make pushbutton wars, we will have no plenty and no world. Harry Alcorn Supervising Principal Your future will undoubtedly be affected very much by the ever increasing emphasis on science. Every successful launching of a Sputnik” will only increase this emphasis. Most scientific developments have made life physically easier. An ever increasing amount of leisure time will be added to our lives. To live a happy and successful life other factors in education must be included. Among these are an appreciation of nature, an acceptable standard of ethics, and an interest in improving the world in which we live. Science and culture must be prop- erly integrated or life will cease to exist. G. Seniors CLASS FLOWER American Red Rose CLASS MOTTO The past has forever gone; but the future remains our own. CLASS COLORS Black and White CLASS OFFICERS PRESIDENT .... William Spargo VICE PRESIDENT . . Samuel Gates SECRETARY.............Jane Treece HISTORIAN.....Charles DeLuca TREASURER .... Hansjorg Fend It is almost four years ago since we were freshmen. There were one hundred thirty nine of us that September day in 1954. I am sure we remember it well. Each one of us was anxious to find for himself what high school was really like. After the first week, we were able to get to our classes on time. Since the routine had been established, we fell to organizing our class. Early in the year we held a class meeting, and with the help of our advisors, Miss McCahan and Mrs. Ritchey, elected the following officers: William Spargo; Vice President, David O’Neal; Treasurer, Gary Saylor; Secretary, Shelby Weaver; Historian, Jane Treece. Our Social project for that year was a Hobo Party held in the spring. A group of one hundred fourteen sophomores returned to Saxton Liberty in September, 1955, ready to begin another year in pursuit of knowledge. Everything seemed quite familiar by now. At our first class meeting we elected officers. They were: President, William Spargo; Vice President, Jerry Hughes; Treasurer, James Rhodes; Secretary, Jane Treece; and Historian, Charles De Luca. In March, we held the annual St. Patrick’s Day Party. Time passed swiftly and we had soon completed half our high school days. When we returned the next September as juniors, our class enrollment had dropped to ninety-four. A lot of nice things happened this year, beginning with the arrival of our class rings. We sponsored a successful Halloween Party and sold refreshments at the home football games. The big event of the year was the Junior-Senior Prom with “Spring Serenade” as the theme. Another high light was a trip to Gettysburg. Officers for this year were: President, William Spargo; Vice President, Francis Ciarrocca; Treasurer, Norma Miller; Secretary, Jane Treece; and Historian, Charles De Luca. • In September, 1957, we came to the doors of Saxton Liberty to begin our final year. Our high school days, we realized, were quite few. We were pleased to have as a member of our class, Hans Fend, an exchange student from Germany. We set to work at once to build up our class treasury and to begin the production of the year book. We were host at the Christmas Party and in the spring made the traditional trip to Washington, where we saw many of the historical sights. The officers for this year were: President, William Spargo; Vice-President, Sam Gates; Treasurer, Hans Fend; Secretary, Jane Treece; and Historian, Charles De Luca. All too soon our high school days came to an end, but we will long remember those four years at Saxton Liberty. The first thing that each of us did was to stake out his claim. These claims were surveyed by RONALD MASLANIK, WILLIAM SPARGO, and MICKEY REED. Even though it was hilly and bumpy, it was soon leveled off by our construction crew; DONALD BROWN, JAMES BROWN, FRANK GARLOCK, and ROBERT WARSING. A whole city was staked off by two real estate brokers, ROBERT JENKINS and RUTH ANN DICKINSON. Their very efficient secretaries were JUDITH COLLEGE and CAROL BRENNAN. The next thing that we did was to start building our main business district. It was surprising, but BLAIR CLAPPER became the minister of our first church. Some very out- standing workers in the church were: HANS FEND, HELEN HYDOCK, BETTY PATTERSON, and MARVIN TAYLOR. The president of our first space bank was ARNOLD BLACK. The secretary of the bank was MARY JANE DIEHL. CHARLFS DELUCA was cashier, and DONNA DUNN was his assistant. The tnree owners of our modern shopping center were JACK BAKER, JAMES DRENNING, and DARRELL LYNN. LEE AMICK, AUDREY HIMES, SALLY McMURTRIE, and JOAN YE AMENS were models in one of our large clothing departments. The very creative fashion designer of this department was ELAINE WHITED. Since we were in need of schools, we embarked on the task of building them. The superintendent of the schools was RICHARD HESS. His assistant was CLAIR HINKLE. The principal of the elementary school was JAMES FOOR; the junior high principal was KENNETH FOSTER, and the senior high school principal was LEONARD SNAVELY. A few of the teachers were: JEANNE BROWELL, NORMA MILLER, MARIANNE MORT, and CHARLES KORMANSKI. The head cook of our large school cafeteria was MYRNA MILLER. Next we decided to build a hospital. ROBERT CIMBALISTA was one of the doctors. Some of the nurses were: BONNIE REED, JANE TREECE, and SHELBY WEAVER. BONNIE KUHSTOSS was a medical technologist here. The people on the earth were writing to us regularly. So we were in need of a post office. HARRIET BISSELL became our post mistress. The helpers were: WILLIAM BECKER, DEANNA EVANS, and BARBARA HEFFNER. The owners of our daily newspaper, “The Moon Gazette,” were Mr. and Mrs. GARY SAYLOR. Mrs. Saylor was the former AGNES DAUGHERTY. We classmates were becoming more settled now, and wanted some entertainment, so we built a night club. JERRY HUGHES was one of our most popular singers, having replaced Elvis Presley many years before we left the earth as chief-hip-twister there. FRANCES CIARROCCA as a comedian far surpassed the Jerry Lewis of our high school days. DAVID W ILLS organized a dance band, after playing many years with the band of Lawrence Welk when on earth. We also set up a T.V. Space Station which was directed by NORMAN HALL. One of our large theaters was owned by MILDRED BULGER and SAMUEL GATES. k 4 Many more people were now moving to the moon, and it became necessary to elect people for high officers of our city and of the entire moon. JAMES BARTO became the president of the moon, and MARY HELEN FLECK the vice president. Their private secretaries were PEGGY BURNS and WANDA FLEEGLE. EDWARD SCHENCK was the moon’s ambassador to the earth. The mayor of our thriving city was JERRY JOHNSON. His secretary was FAYE MITCHELL. One of our city policemen was DAVID O'NEAL. The pilots of space ships between the moon and earth were ALLAN KOLINCHAK, RICHARD MOORE, and EDDIE CYPHER. Not only the men, but the women too were pilots. Some of the prettiest pilots of the Strotosphere Transportation Company were: DOROTHY CARMACK, CLEO REED, VERNA RISBON, and JUNE SHAFFERN. WILLIAM McMILLIN and LEROY WRIGHT owned a large rocket building company on the moon. LINDA ABBOTT, RUTH FLENNER, BEVERLY LONG, and SONJA RAMSAY were employed here. Since they needed beauticians here, DIANNE REED, MARILEE SHERLOCK, and ROSEMARY WILLI- SON were making loads of money keeping the tresses of the moon ladies in perfect order. DIXIE FIX was owner of a chain of restaurants which served very delicious meals. Her Star Dust sundaes were known all over the moon as the most delicious confection any person there ever tasted. MAY BRODE and JOAN McCAVITT were head waitresses in the Fix Restaurant. The tourists were coming to the moon from many other planets. So KAY WENGLIK and her husband opened a very modern motel. WANDA HEISTER and BEVERLY ZIMMERMAN were both very happily married and raising families. FAITH (BUCKLEY) WRIGHT, PATRICIA NOLAN, JEAN SNYDER, and PATRICIA WHITE with their husbands and families had gone further into the interior of the moon to live and were writing back to their city dwelling classmates about the many delights and hardships of pioneer life there. o JUNIOR CLASS ADVISORS On September 3, 1957, a class of seventy-six entered Saxton Liberty High School. Our hearts were filled with enthusiasm and also regret because one half of our four years was completed. Now we are starting our second half. With the help of our class advisors, Mr. and Mrs. Witowski, we held our first class meeting and elected our class officers. This year we received our class rings which we will cherish. We were busy beavers as we worked in the concession stand at the football games, sponsored the magazine drive, and sold Christmas cards. Our social events for the year were the gala Halloween Party held on Tuesday evening, October 30, and the elab- orate and decorative Junior-Senior Prom on May 9, 1958. We had a very happy evening with the seniors, although we realized that this would perhaps be our last social event together. 40 JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS President........Larry McCahan Vice-President. . . .Wayne Schenck Secretary-Treasurer.
