Wesley Harold Ballard Because of health reasons, Mr. Ballard retired from teaching at the beginning of the 1987-88 school year. During his career, he taught at Silverton two years, Ector one year, and at Savoy for the past twenty-four years. He graduated from East Texas State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Vocational Agriculture in 1960 and received a Master of Education degree in 1969. He taught science at SHS until 1980 when be began teaching VoAg. He served as VoAg Chapter advisor and was a member of the Ag Teacher’s Association. Because of Mr. Ballard’s dedication to education, and for his service to Savoy High School, it is with pride that we dedicate the 1987-88 Cardinal to Mr. Ballard. This was the very first year Savoy High School was allowed to have a real “prom” and homecoming dance. It was also the first year the seniors had their senior trip during spring break when they traveled to Red River, New Mexico to ski! Senior accomplishments included medals in track and UIL Literary events and winning area in baseball. Seniors began the year with an ice cream supper and worked all year on fund-raising by selling cheese and candy, fruit, cakes as football games and by sponsoring a garage sale and basketball tournament. The Eighth Grade class of 1988 graduated from the ranks of Savoy Junior High School on May 26, 1988. This was one of the more memorable highlights of our lives to this point. The entire year was great. We enjoyed some new classes and some new teachers. We enjoyed Mr. Foremen teaching our history class and especially enjoyed Computer Literacy with Mr. Sears. A truly great year, but we look forward to High School, and we will become the Seniors of 1992. s E V E N T H G R A D E Seventh grade finally made it out of Elementary. This was their first year to start into Jr. High. They are five years away from getting out of school. The Seventh graders have had to get use to new teachers and lots more work. They had History with Mr. Foreman, Reading and English with Mrs. Crabb, Math with Mr. Colburn, Science with Mr. Rutledge and F.E. followed by a Study Hall. The sixth graders have taken several field trips. They went to the Bonham Veteran’s Hospital in honor of Veteran’s Day, where they were served lunch and several of the student’s met Congressman Ralph Hall. In conjunction with our study of medieval history, the class visited a real “castle” in Bells, and even constructed their own castle in the classroom. A trip to the library, television station and TPandL were also highlights of our year. The class enjoyed working on computers and doing science experiments. One memorable science experiment ended with a “bang” when a student, who shall remain nameless, helped our vinegar and soda solution “explode” all over the room and the teacher. The class is very thoughtful and sensitive to the needs of others. I hope they will enjoy building their “castles” for each of these “knights and Ladies” are unique and very special. Pam Adams J.B. This year, we have visited the Veteran’s hospital for Veteran’s Day, the Denison Herald Newspaper office, the Denison Library, Bells bank, nursing homes, and a musical instrument presentation in Bonham. We have eaten Bugs on a Bed, Hot Rod Hot Dogs, and Kangaroo Pockets. We have laughed, cried, and played together. We have learned that we all have feelings and that we need to be nice to others. Thanks to Mr. Phifer, the FFA has been able to go outside the class- room. Mr. Phifer has established a Livestock and Dairy judging team. This team has been able to go to the Fort Worth Livestock Show and the Houston Livestock Show. The FFA Chapter will receive money to buy new tools and new equipment for the Ag. shop. With the new tools and equipment, the chapter will be able to build things to sell and to help raise money to help improve our chapter. The FFA members would like to say thanks to Mr. Phifer. “We couldn’t have done it without you!” — President Katrina Cheek 1987 88 Officers Secretary T reasurer- Jody Lowry Reporter- Micheal Smith Vice-President- Scctt Francis President- Katrina Cheek More members: Sopeia Flood, Scott Francis, Da- vid Reed, Scotty House, Jody Lowry, Pat Murph- O dOO This is the first year Savoy has had a student council. In the 1986-87 school year, each class appointed two students to work together during the summer to form the student council constitution. When the 1987- 88 school year started, each class again elected two students to represent their class. These students were (pictured below): Seniors- Margaret Dettmer, president; Angie Hodge, secretary; Junior- Shellie Adams, vice-president; Julie Doan, treasurer; Sophomores- Katrina Beacht, reporter; Jim Bob Bradley; Freshmen- Stacey Slaughter; and Lorie DeMuth, treasurer. The first major activity of the council was to sponsor a homecoming dance. This was Savoy’s first dance, and the most successful non-athletic activity held at the school. The council met once a week to discuss changes within the school and activities for the students. The student council has been very successful and with the support of the sponsor Mr. Beryl Sears and the school, it will continue to get better each year. The Freshmen representatives take time to chat be- tween classes. Reporter Katrina Beacht really enjoys the football game. Everyone was a little timid at the start of the dance. What’s so funny girls??? With the 1987-88 school year came FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes). Coach Billy Coburn and Coach Rick Foreman sponsored the club, while the elected officers David Gaddy, President; Pat Murphree, co-Vice-president; Jim Bob Bradley, co-Vice- president; Tana Coburn, Secretary; Chris Cooper, Treasurer; and Brian Gaddy, Public Relations kept the club organized and planned activities. The major activity was FCA weekend at Six Flags, which the members enjoyed, and the major fund raiser was the Hoopsters game. The game was entertaining for the fans as well as the people who played. FCA has brought to its members fun, fellowship, and learning to work as a team with other Christians through Jesus Christ. It has helped to direct the youth of Savoy High School to have a Christian attitude not only in athletics but in other aspects of life as well. What’s so funny, Amy!?? 84 The students worked hard to prepare the cafeteria for their first dance at Savoy High School. There was a tremendous turn-out of students and parent’s. If we were to pick the winner’s of the dance it would have to be Gail and Bill Tom Bradley. With Gail’s moves you would expect her to be a Solid Gold Dancer. We would like to thank everyone who helped to set up the dance. Also, we would like to thank everyone who came and participated and made most of the people proud of us everyone had a great time. Each year the staff selects the theme of the Cardinal, the layout, and the overall appearance of the yearbook. Probably the most difficult task is to make the current year’s annual better than last year’s. Endless hours are spent preparing layout sheets, writing copy, taking pictures, and attending staff meetings. Sometimes tempers flare, and sometimes the staff joins together as a whole to complete the job at hand. Nevertheless, deadlines were met, and the rough layouts were sent to the publishers. Under the leadership of editors Jennifer Francis and Brian Bradshaw, this year’s Cardinal was prepared with hard work and dedication, and the entire staff is proud of the final production. 1988 Annual Staff Jennifer Francis Brian Bradshaw Donna Francis Gloria Rolen Jenny Thomas Joetta Mullican Tishia Murphree Advisor-Mr. Beryl Sears Editor-Jennifer Francis Editor-Brian Bradshaw Savoy, Texas Open: 5-11 M-S, 6-11 Sunday 214 965-4223 Compliments Of TAYLOR MARBLE CO.
