It involves a transition to more difficult academic material as well as a greater demand in self- discipline and responsibility, with homework, fractions, and higher expectations come the extra benefits o f no longer having to show your lunch tray and an extended P.E. period. Hopefully, the extra challenge will pay off by making the step into sixth grade and then junior high an easier one. We have made many new friends and encountered many new learning experiences. We have had a lot of fun with our Letter-A- Week Alphabet Program. We have visited a castle, fixed our own hamburgers, visited a hospital, rode a bus, and watched ourselves on television. We have worn freckles, glasses, pointed noses, crowns, neckties, jeans, T- shirts, and tennis shoes. We have carried teddy bears, made sock snakes, tissue flowers, and turtles. We have drawn pictures of Mr. Kay, Mr. Newell, and Mrs. Tidwell. We have eaten ants on a log, kangaroo pocket, toast and tea. Humpy Dumpy Salad. It has all been fun as well as a real learning experience. All children are very special and yet they are all so very different. There is one thing that is the same with all of them though and that is that they want to love and BE LOVED. CARDINALS GO TO Never before had a Savoy Baseball Team gone to the State Tournament. But in 1987, there was no stopping Coach Ted Dettmer and his Cardinal Team. From the start of the season the Cardinals were bound for STATE! Senior Lance Johnson made sure the Cardinals went to State by out-dueling almost every opponent. Johnson's pitching record was outstanding (12-2), as was David Dophied's (11-3). The entire Savoy season was outstanding (23-5). It was not an easy road the team had to take to get to Austin. The Cardinals first triumph was winning District, then came a win over Trenton in Bi-District, a win over frost in Area, and defeating Maude in Regional. Then came Sam Rayburn in the Quarter-Finals. For the fourth time was for a trip to Austin and the State Tournament! The exceptional 1987 season ended one game away from the final with a loss to High Island (5-1). Everyone is proud of this team and will always remember the pride the team restored to Savoy High School. Coach Ted Dettmer Few Class A schools are priviledge to have a coach and teacher with the ability and dedication of Ted Dettmer. This exceptional Championship season for Coach Dettmer and the Cardinals confirms what the faculty and students of Savoy High School have always known — that is that SHS is extremely lucky to have Coach Dettmer as a part of the faculty. During the 1986-87 year Beta Members took turns working in the concession stand at home bas- ketball games. The money earned was used to help pay for the State Convention and their service pro- ject of helping purchase an ice ma- chine for the school. While in Fort Worth, Betas cam- paigned for Brent Fralicks who ran for State President using the theme Vote for Brent, He's Heaven Sent. Beta angels presented a campaign skit. Although members were busy with the campaign, they still found time to enjoy the hotel's jacuzzi. Last year's Queen, Jeri Barron, crowned Kelly as the new royalty. Tisha Murphree, Khristy Nichols, and Julie Reynolds were runner ups for queen, and Brent Fralicks, Jody Isom, and David Gaddy were contenders for Mr. Football. As usual, homecoming week was filled with fun and excitement and will be remembered by all of the students of Savoy High School.
