Dhii Eook 3i Proudly D)edicated to C0JCJ4 Qjmj mwjumdh 2 To recognize a coach who does an excellent job with his ball teams and never brags on himself, we the 1983-84 annual staff would like to dedicate our annual to COACH GARY ROWLAND. He has been coaching for eleven years, the last five at Savoy. Since he has been at Savoy, his record stands at 89 wins, 41 losses. This year he added more than just the girls’ teams; he also coached the varsity boys to 14 wins and 14 losses. He was selected 1983-84 Girls' Coach of the Year. In 1982-83, he took his girls’ team to District, Bi-District, and Area cham- pionships, and lost at Regionals by only two points. This year his girl ball team won District and Bi- District, while he carried the boys' team to second in District. For all the long afternoons and nights of workouts and games which may have seemed to go unnoticed, we would like to say THANKS! Contents Classes 17 Organizations 43 Athletics A. The Cardinals, like the Smurfs, were small in stature. They were also small in numbers, short on ex- perience and short on wins. The only thing the Cards were not short of or small in were courage and heart. The Car- dinals lost their first 6 games and had just finished being beaten soundly by the 2 teams to represent the district in the playoffs, both ranked in the top 10 in the state. At such a time lesser men might have given up, but not these Savoy Cardinals. They reached deep inside and found some “Maroon Pride” still alive and came back to beat Blue Ridge and Cumby in the final 4 games. 22 men started in the heat of August together, and one more joined the effort 2 weeks later, and 23 better men finished the season with a victory in November. It’s easy to stay when things are going well and everyone tells you how great you are, but to remain constant when it's tough out there requires character. There are other coaches who had teams they were proud of, but no coach is any prouder than I to have coached the Cardinals of 1983. — Coach John Miller CONGRATULATIONS ALL DISTRICT CHOICES Jimmie Allred — Hon.
