Look Around And See How Savoy is located in Fannin County on Highway 82 between Bonham and Sherman. SHS has received 56 new students this year making a total of 285 students who partic- ipated with us during 1976-77. SHS also has three new teachers and two new teacher's aides making a total of 15 faculty members. Savoy has grown a lot this year making SHS a larger and better school. We are all anxious to receive our annuals, to participate in the coronation activities, and to attend the bonfire, which begins the bas- ketball season. 4 a. I finally made it to the top! b. Many showed their calves and hogs. Some entered objects in foods, crafts, and sewing, and Sandy Corzine entered the Queen's Contest and did a skit, ”1 Can’t Say No.” Everyone had fun and we are all grateful that we were dismissed from school to go. The Savoy FFA won first place in the shop division at the Fannin County Fair. Representing the chapter were: Kevin Merworth, Mike Corzine, Karen Waggoner, Tommy Scoggins, and Walter Bilyeu. Clayton Harp won two first places and one second place with his chickens. Gene Sim- mons won third place and fourth place with his chickens, and Cary Malone placed first with his chickens. The FFA boys and their advisor are to be commended for their interest and accomplish- ments this year. The Savoy students put a lot of time, work and care into each project. When it was time to find out who had placed in all of the events, there were many who were trying to keep the butterflies down. We know that they are all proud of their work and so are we. Even though all of them were tired, they were still excited and it paid off because almost everyone returned home with awards and a smile from ear to ear. 12 Gary Bassham won third place in the swine division at the Fannin County Fair. For the past three years Karen Waggoner has won grand champion with her hog in the swine division. Sherry Brooks won first place in the arts and crafts division with her shadow box. Beth Moore won first place in handicrafts with her hook rug. Kathy Hawk placed third in the baking division with her cake. Lu Ann Linder placed first and sec- ond with her decoupage plaques. Kathy Reynolds placed third in the clothing division with her garment. Steven Moore received the grand champion award with his Hereford bull. Edison Hughes won the grand champion award with his mix-breed bull. Roger Seigler placed second in the swine division. 13 We AU Helped The Halloween Carnival at Savoy High is always a big hit. Everyone has a lot of fun raising money for the King and Queen. During the week before the carni- val, there were many events. Just a few of the projects which each class sponsored to raise money were: a slave auction, a dunking booth, bake sales, snowcone and cotton candy machines, and the conces- sion stand. 14 15 October 28 was a night filled with fun, work, and excite- ment. There were many activities to be enjoyed by every- one . The students took a lot of time and a lot of hard work creating booths such as the shooting gallery, football throw, penny pitch, cake walk, go fishing, and many more. The seniors, Donnie Lankford and Shari Cox, were crowned King and Queen at the coronation which started at eight o’clock. There was entertainment presented by the grade school in the auditorium and the booths were opened afterwards in the gymnasium. a. Is it deer season, yet? b. I'm ready to walk. How about you? c. The students worked hard to get Christmas trees, and each class decorated its own tree with the imagina- tion that only a Savoy stu- dent could have. Everyone exchanged gifts during the party and then went home for a week's rest from the daily activities of school. 18 Merry Christmas And A Happy New Year a. Valentine's Day Is A Time To Play. . . y Box Tops Provide Playground Equipment Our school entered the Post Cereal Physical Fitness and Sports Equipment drive this year. Each class collected and saved post cereal box tops. This was an exciting contest, as there was to be a winner for the student of each class who saved the most box tops and also a winner for the class saving the most. The students really enjoyed looking at the chart that was posted in the hall to see which class was ahead. The contest ended March 31, with a total of 1860 box tops collected. The sixth grade won the contest for having saved the most box tops with a total of 420. They were given an ice cream party. The teacher of each class bought a gift for the student that saved the most box tops in her grade. Winners of the contest who are pictured on the slide are: Amy Moore, Michelle Doan, Donna Duncan, Mike Tay- lor, Troy Cox, Elton Whitfield, and Terry Malone. Each class will receive playground balls, jump ropes, and bean bag toss games. The grade school teachers would like to thank the students, parents and friends who helped them during the contest. Parents Visit Classrooms 24 Emphasis On Right To Read Program We would like to take this opportunity to emphasize our participation in the Right to Read program. This program is designed to help students develop an interest in many areas of reading, to develop broader vocabularies, and for the students pleasure. A special time is set aside each day for Right to Read. Each week a topic is picked to be studied. The students and teachers share materials found on these topics. Also, we have had guest speakers, field trips, and films to help motivate our interest in reading. It has been our desire this year to involve parent volunteers in our Right to Read program. These parents have been working on the preparation of materials to be used in our reading program. We want to thank each parent who helped us this year. We appreciate the time you worked to help make our reading program a success. 25 Easter Egg Hunts Held This year the Easter egg hunt was held at various places for the elementary school. The kindergarten class held theirs at Mrs. Neely's house. The first grade through the fifth grade didn't have too far to go. They held theirs on the school grounds. The sixth grade went to the country to have their Easter egg hunt at the Simmons' place. Everyone had a lot of fun at their parties. Many eggs were consumed by the students. And, now it was time for a long break from school. At Various Places a. I wish it was time to start hunting the eggs.” b. I can't find many eggs.” c. Boy, this is fun! d. And they're off. e. This course made school more enjoyable for these young ladies. Tommy Myers and Glenn Block also participated in the vocational program for young men. Glenn worked for Mr. Bill Waggoner and learned a great deal about hogs. Sandy Corzine, Susan Whitfield, Char- lene Robinson, Barbara Ricker, Beckie Whitmire, Donna Jackson, Shirley Burks, and Marsha Epperson took Cosmetology at the Area Vocational School. Beckie Whit- mire, Barbara Ricker, and Shirley Burks are eligible to take the State Board Exam- ination. Senior boys Donnie Lankford, Steve Monroe, Gerald McLarry, and Bill Barron took Building Trades. Their project for the year was to build a house. Leslie Bassham took auto mechanics; Walter Purdy, Jerry Reynolds, and Mickey Apple- gate took radio and television. Rosemary Caylor took a nursing course. 28 In Area Vocational Studies Country Is. . . The Junior class entertained the Senior Class and guests with a banquet at Ramada Inn in Sherman, Texas on March 12. The theme Country Is was carried out by using red plaid tablecloths on the banquet tables. In the center of the tables guitar centerpieces were placed, and a kerosene lamp was spaced between each centerpiece. The guitar tooth picks, which were stuck into the desert, served as a decoration for the desert course. Saddles and hay added to the country-western atmosphere for the banquet. The wish- ing well and lily pool were used as the background for the individual and group pictures. Cowpuncher Moore gave the welcome and invocation. Dungaree Jackson thanked the senior class for an enjoyable evening. Longhorn Sanders made some comments about What Is Country. Bulldogger Lankford gave the class will for the senior class. Bowlegged Corzine prophesied what the senior class would do in the future. Calico Ferguson intro- duced The Midnight Hour Band, who entertained the group with some country-western music. a. The FHA entertained their mothers with a skit and with poems having a mother theme. It appeared that Lu Ann was deeply absorbed in her part. Janet was deeply engrossed in everything that was hap- pening. 32 The Mother-Daughter Banquet Honored at the banquet, along with our mothers, was Mrs. White, our spon- sor. On behalf of the FHA, she was presented with a plant in appreciation for all of her help. Cindy, Donna, and Shari received neck- laces for their achieve- ments in club work during the past two years. Karla and her mother were delightfully enjoying their food. Sandy kept forgetting her poem while Mrs. White laughed at all of our mis- takes. 33 Time And Effort Pays Off I have thirty or forty years left, or maybe it's thirty or forty seconds, and I believe that enjoying this time may be the only thing that really matters.” - Hugh Prather Junior High Learns The Fundamentals BACK: Managers: Cindy Bankston, Diane Dodson, Charla Linder, Kim Waggoner, Peggy Bilyeu, Jennifer Rey- nolds, Rhonda Caylor, Vickie Smith, Leslie Ballard, Diana Nelms, Coach: Joe Dodson. The play-off was held in the Sherman High School gymnasium where the Cardinals emerged as champions. They went on to become bi-district champions with an easy win over the Tom Bean Tom- cats. The team advanced to the regional play-offs at Kilgore. The team's win- ning ways came to an abrupt end in the first game. To become a member of the club, the student must have an average of 88. The officers of the club are: Shari Cox, president, Jerry Reynolds, vice-president, and Cindy Bankston, secretary and treasurer. Mr. Ownby and Mr. Parish are the sponsors. The Beta Club meets the second Monday night of each month and plans the activities for the month. The highlight of the year was when the members and sponsors attended the State Beta Convention in Ft. Worth January 21 and 22. The Club participated in several worthwhile projects this year. The members worked in the concession stand during all of the home basketball games. They conducted the March of Dimes Drive for the Savoy community. They con- tributed $100 to the cheerleaders to purchase new uniforms for the 1977-78 school year. The Beta Club purchased a camera for the annual staff. This will enable the staff to make better pictures for the 1978 yearbook. The activities of the year ended with a party at El Chico Restaurant in Denison. The new officers for the 1977-78 school year were installed at this meeting. Worth. They stopped to eat lunch at Poncho's before checking into the hotel. While their hotel rooms were being readied, they waited in the lobby. During this time, they received all kinds of cam- paign material from the different schools which were campaigning for state offices. Finally, they got their rooms and unpacked. After attending the first meeting, they went to eat at Arby's. The next day they got up early and ate breakfast in the Sheraton Hotel. They attended another meeting, and when it was over, they were ready to eat lunch at Bonanza. The members enjoyed themselves thoroughly and the general con- sensus was that it was a just reward for having spent so many working hours throughout the year in the concession stand. It was fun, but it involved a lot of nerve-wracking, back- breaking work which caused everyone's patience to grow a little thin. However, it was all worth it when, on the evening of May 13, 1977, the final curtain closed and the applause was heard, and after- ward when compliments were continu- ously given to actors as well as the busi- ness staff. Our first stop was Memphis. We spent the night there and left Thursday for Nashville. That night we took a riverboat cruise across the Cum- berland River. On Friday we spent an enjoyable day at Opry- land. We had a lot more to pack after that day. Saturday we went to the Country Music Hall of Fame, and the Wax Museum of Stars. On Sunday, we started back to Savoy by way of the Ozark Mountains. We spent the night in Harrison, Arkansas and started back down the mountains on Monday. We stopped and had a picnic before we came down. Then it was non-stop all the way home. This was probably the last time we would all be together as the class of 1977, but I can say it was the most carefree times we have ever spent together. Care Free Times 110 Of Our Lives The Senior Class would like to thank our chaperons for all their help and guidance. Mr. Parish did all of the driving, and Mr. White did all of the navigating. Their wives, Betty Parish and Sherry White, lost a lot of sleep on this trip chaperoning the girls. We hope they had as much fun as we did. m T For Texas 112 T For Tennessee 113 I buy things I don’t need, then look for ways to use them in order to justify the purchase - in this way I end up doing what I don't want to twice.” - Hugh Prather Where We Spend Our Time ar r V - Lr v x 5 Sherman, Texas Carpels Vinyls Linoleum Ceramic Tile Cabinet Tops Paper Interior Decorator BONHAM LIVESTOCK COMMISSION WALKER SON East Side Square, Bonham, Texas Bring us your Livestock Sales every Monday Joe A.
