Carraway, D. H. Horton and J. R. Ford Realizing that Science and Mathematics have presented many challenges from the period of Aristotle to this present day and that the two fields are growing in importance every day, the science and mathematics teachers at Savannah High School are corrobo- rating on the new approaches of modern mathematics and sciences through a media of research and problem-solving. Each year these teachers attempt to approach their sub- jects from a modern standpoint. In mathematics special emphasis is laid on formulas, equations, mathematical graphs, dependence, algebraic computations and trigonometric functions. The science classes are taught more of the research and of the knowledge hoped to be gained from its scientific approach or research. Mr. J. E. Ormond Voc. To perpetuate the ideal of self- direction in molding the life of the students at Savannah High School, the Student Council and its auxiliaries attempt to give the student body free- dom to enjoy the rights and privileges which have been granted to the students in order that they may wholly enjoy the democratic atmosphere which exists at Savannah. The Student Council is c 0 mp o s e d of students elected by their respective classes. The working part of this complex organization is seen in its accomplishments. The Student Council is working industriously toward publishing Savannah's first print- ed handbook. Delegates from Savannah attended the State Convention held at Hillside High School, Durham, N. C. The Student Council also aided in fosteringthe improvement of the school's lunchroom program. Mrs. Bertha W. As our last chapter is closed On our high school career, we hope to glance back over the years spent at Savannah and truthfully say we have benefited from all our experiences. We know that whatever we have accomplished here is merely a twig in the forest of life. We can only hope that our experiences at Savannah will help us to successfully traverse that forest. Nevertheless, high school has not answered all of our questions, it has only pres ented us with a little slice of life. We are still proudbecause we have come a long way down the road of study and understanding. We realize that a still greater challenge re- mains ahead. For some, this year will mean an end to our formal education; but for others, this milestone will open new avenues of study. When Finis is written to our years of sorrows and joys-triumphs and hardships, we believe that within our hearts we have the power to up- hold and foster the beliefs and ideals that have been instilled in us here at dear ole Savannah. We are now determined to reach our goal, that only a few short years ago, seemed at times dismal and uncertain. There are many activities in high school that are filled with pleasure, but there are many tasks and responsibilities that require diligent work. At the present we know that the brilliant glitter of pleasure must be cut off by unceasing toil and persistent work. But, if we keep our heads high and maintain our interest, in the distance we shall gleam that one sparkle of light that will eventually become seniority. Two years of French are being offered in the high school department, while a basic elementary French Course is taught in the Elementary Department. The French classes, with the Realia and Audio- Visual Aids, have greatly enhanced the knowledge of the French pupils. Latin, the basic foundation of all foreign languages, was added to the curriculum this year. The pupils who take the Latin Course have discovered that Latin enables them to get a better understanding of the English language and that it rapidly increases one's vocabulary and helps to simplify other foreign languages. 91491205 11 ' 91491205 I 970641209 91704115 GdeS The Class and Math Club are comprised of students that have ex- celled in Mathematics and for those students who wish to increase their knowledge in the Mathematics Field. We cannot help restraining the tears that fill our eyes as we visualize the good old times at Savannah that were captured in this book. As one's memory slowly fades away, this book will keep alive the fond recollections of the school year 1962-63. We thank our staff for aiding us in this profound accomplishment. Aspecialpraise goes to Carolyn King, who through her keen interest and devotion, has stood out above the rest. A considerable amount of appreciation goes to Delmar Studios for their patience-with us in photographing and publishing our yearbook, the 1963 Eagle. To Mr. J . E. Ormond, our Agriculture Instructor, who was always waiting in readiness to take our group and activities pictures - a special thanks is bestowed upon him. We, the Editor and Co-Editor, are offering to our patrons, parents, faculty and friends our best wishes, and may you always hold your 63 Eagle in the highest of esteem. It is within the reach of every normal person, but the mysterious thing about it is that so few people in jobs today seem willing to pay the price of success - extra thought and effort. High School graduates must understand it is more difficult to suc- ceed than it is to fail. The man who desires success must do his work in a spirit of let's do it better this time. All of you have the oppor- tunity to succeed if you have the proper attitude. Your daily jobs must be done the best way you know how. If you do this and know yourself - and do something to correct your weaknesses - you will be on the road to success. E. l.
