IN MCDONALD’S ALL-AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOL BAND Savannah, Ga.—Stanley Wilkerson, a senior at Savannah High School, was selected to the 1984 McDonald's ALL-AMERICAN HIGH SCHOOL BAND. The 16-yeat-old trombone player is the first high school musician from Savannah to be named to the Band since its inception in 1967. The announcement was made in October by Ronald Etheridge, Superintendent of Chatham County Public Schools, and Wayne Murphy, owner of McDonald’s restaurants in Savannah. Stan is one of 105 young people in the country selected for the ALL-AMERICAN Band. That alone is quite an honor, but his selection is also a 'first' from Savannah.” 167 168 169 Miss Senior Mary Brownlee escorted by Lawerence Tutt Junior Court Joyce Gibbons escorted by Terry Young Freshmen Court Cathy Dewese escorted by Charles Mark Jr. Sophomore Court Valencia Smalls escorted by Anthony Cope V Miss Homecoming Queen LaShawn Mobley 171 174 SAVANNAH HIGH BLUE JACKET MARCHING BAND Director: JAMES THOMPSON Katrina Adams Andrew Collins Aldolphus Allen Gary Cope April Alston Davis Monica Maurice Anderson Paul Demeyer LaVeria Bacon Arelia Ellis Felicia Barnes Krystle Fennell Pamela Barron Mortin Fife Yusef Barton David Frazier Zelma Billey Edward Fripp Shana Boles Adrian Garvin Pam Bourgos Jennifer George Michelle Braddy Eric Gibson Victoria Brannon Erica Godbee Corey Brown Sharon God bold Eugene Brown Theron Godbee Gregory Brown Verdell Green Herman Brown Paprice Gresham Monica Brown Sandra Grogan Ramon Brown William Gunsallus Soundra Brown Rhonda Hall Stephanie Brown Victoria Hamilton Mary Brownlee Eisa Harden Yolanda Bryant William Harley John Burke Marlin Heyward Koren Burke Bernis Hicks Tina Burke Selina Hippard Joseph Burroughs Twila Howard Perry Bynes Jeri Huges Antoinelle Chisholm Paula Hutchins Rodney Chishom David Jackson Veronica Clark Rodney Jenkins Raymond Cohen Tonya Jenkins Sonya Cohen Melvin Coleman Greer Johnson James Johnson Stephanie Johnson Ken Plowe Lorenzo Lane Jenee Polite Michael Leach Stephanie Polite Phillip Major Alisa Pratt Stephanie Martin David Proctor Kim Matthews Cheryl Rawlerson Joyce McCoy Craig Reed Vlademir McKiever Mark Reed David McKiver Ivory Reese Robecca Michaels Brian Saxon Richelle Milton Marva Scott Sean Milton Derrick Seymore Kiwanus Mobley Catrina Sheppard LaShawn Mobley Douglas Simmons Ronald Montague Monica Simmons Henry Morrel Valencia Smalls Janice Morris Anthony Smith Eugene Mosley Kevin Smith Barbara Moss LaShonda Soloman Keith Moultrie Jamie Stringer Nicholos Mueller Benita Thomas Lorenzo Mungin Michael Tomlin Chiquita Myers Ivonnova Walker James Nabor Larry Walker Lonnie Oglesby Lyndon Ward Billy Ollis Pepper Whih Rollins Orr Robert Wilkerson Stacey Osborne Angela Williams Michael Page Richard Wise Estelline Payne Sheryl Young Jamie Phillips Maurice Oswell Ronald Pinckney Victor Pinkney Michael Pinkney LaVeria Baker Band Director—James Thompson Drum Majors—Craig Reed and Kim Matthews Majorettes—Stacy Osborne and LaShaun Mobley 178 Brass Section 179 Percussion Section Krystle Fennell Pam Bourgos Jenee Polite Valencia Smalls Varsity Cheerleader 180 Marva Scott Stephanie Polite Tonya Jenkins Laveria Baker Monica Davis Monica Brown Rhonda Hall Adrian Garvin Toni Chisholm Dione Smoke Flag Team 181 Brigade Staff Brigade Commander Earnest Lain ROTC Officer Club 183 184 Rifle Team Drum and Bugle Corps Girl's Drill Team 185 Boy's Drill Team Brigade Staff—Adrain Blount A 1st Battalion Staff—Stephanie Polite A Co. 1st Battalion—Faye Heyward B Co. 1st Battalion—De Andrea Boyd 2nd Battalion Staff—Tara Heyward A Co. 2nd Battalion—Dawnell Williams B Co. 2nd Battalion—Cindy Keith 3rd Battalion Staff—Carolyn Caperlengo Co. 3rd Battalion—Marla Johnstone Rifle Team—Angela Clark Boy's Drill Team—Sharon Parker Color Guard—Monica Davis Drum and Bugle Corps—LaTrell Porter Girl's Drill Team—Tracy Avant Officer's Club—Tonya Franklin Military Ball Queen Dawnell Williams M k' to Queen—Dawnell Williams 1st Runner-up—Carolyn Caperlengo 2nd Runner- up—Tary Heyward 3rd Runner-up—Faye Heyward 186 Vanessa Faison, Walter Brown, Patricia Harris, Davita Capers, Dionne Thompson, Eddie Lamonte, Valerie Rawls, Keisha Davis, Vanessa Johnson, Angela Grant, Patricia Gardner, Patrick Capers, Brian Blake, Traci Bryant, Staci Bryant, Tyrone Jones, Kevin Porter, Roxanne Allen, Michael Gibbons, Donna Nesman, lammie Mosley, James Johnson, Eric Gibson, Tyrane Roberts, Tanet Taharka, Vassie Brown, Taria Davis, Lana Simmons, Sara Nails, Gus Chosholm, Lisa Saners, Debra Ellison, Sheila Clark, Aaron Bacon, Amanda OFFICERS Pres. Louis Cooper tossed two touchdown passes to Hezekia Bartley to lead the Jackets to a 14-0 win. The Bluejacket defense ws devastating, holding Tompkins to minus 23 yards total offense. Willie Walker recovered a Tompkins fumble at the Wolverine 20 on the third play of the game to set up the first score. The Jackets scored their second touchdown when they drove 37 yards in seven plays. Bartley completed the drive when he caught a 23 yard pass from Cooper. SAVANNAH HIGH-14 TOMPKINS HIGH- 0 The dream continued for Savannah High, but Benedictine had a rude awakening. Savannah High came alive in the second half and scored a 34-20 over the seventh ranked Cadets. The Blue Jackets trailed 20-7 late in the second quarter, but stung the proud Cadet defense for three long scoring plays. After SHS fell behind early, tailback Dwayne Miller broke loose on a 33-yard run up the middle of the strong SHS offensive line with 2:20 left in the first half. On the play SHS center Leonard Bevill twisted his ankle and had to sit out the rest of the game. BC received the second half kick off, but on the first play SHS linebacker Everette Daniels recovered a BC fumble, and on the next play Louis Cooper hit Trevor Haffly in the corner of the end zone. Quarterback Louis Cooper ended up with 154-yards passing for the night and Dwayne Miller had 122-yards rushing on 19 carries. As usual the SHS defense was AWESOME holding BC to nothing in the second half. SAVANNAH HIGH-34 BC—20 SHS ROLLS PAST JENKINS Savannah High went to 3 0 on the season as they defeated Jenkins 24-0. Tailback Dwayne Miller rushed for 142-yards on 20 carries. This put him at 381-yards for the season. SHS quarterback Louis Cooper picked apart the Warrior secondary, completing 8-of-10 passes for 102 yards. His favorite receiver, Hezekia Bartley, has 6 catches for 88 yards and scored two touch- downs. The SHS defense held powerhouse, Jenkins running back, Ronald Geohaghan to only 24- yards on the night. SAVANNAH HIGH—24 JENKINS HIGH- 0 ft 227 JACKETS DEFEAT BULLDOGS Playing on a soggy Field in wind and rain. Savannah High trailed Beach by four points in the fourth quarter. Blue jacket tailback Dwayne Miller fumbled the ball at the Bulldogs 3-yard line, only to have SHS tight end Trevor Haffly recover it in the end zone for the winning score in a 14- 10 victory over Beach. It was Savannah High's Homecoming; both Savannah High and Beach were undefeated. SHS tailback Dwayne Miller rushed for 154-yards on 25 carries, giving him 492 yards for the season. It was a bad game for both teams, but Savannah High prevailed raising their record to 4-0 on the season. SAVANNAH HIGH-14 BEACH HIGH—10 SHS SHUTS OUT TERRORS Savannah High s tradition of tough and strong defense continued as Glynn Academy came into the game with a touted passing offense, but Savannah High held the Red Terrors scoreless, capturing a 14-0 victory. It raised the Jackets record to 5-0 on the season. On the SHS defense, free saftey Jeff Gordon played an excellant game with an injured hand. Corncrback Eric Brown made seven solo tackles. The SHS defenders sacked the Glynn quarterback Eve times for 34-yards in losses. They started off the season playing in the Ocala Thoroughbred Breeders Tournament in Florida. They won their first game against Osceola High and then lost to the $4 team in the nation at that time, Jacksonville-Ribault. the next night. They beat Lake Mary-Orlando in the consolation game and got a third place trophy. The regular season started about a week later against Johnson. SHS won that game 76-70. They continued their great play and won the rest of the regular season games. When tournament time came around. SHS received a first round bye in the Sub-Region B tournament. In the region playoffs, if you lose your season is over, so you have to play well with very few mistakes, and that's just what SHS did against Glynn and Statesboro to capture the Sub-Region B Championship. The next week SHS went to the Civic Center to play in the Region 3-AAAA Tournament. In the first game, SHS defeated Tompkins and then Statesboro to claim the Region 3-AAAA Championship. Then the Blue Jackets travelled to Macon to play in the state tournament. They played a gutsy Monroe team that defeated SHS 56-53 in overtime. That crushed all dreams of winning the state title. But, it was the greatest season Savannah High has had in several years. This year SHS had two tremendous players in 6-9 sensation, Pervis Ellison, and point guard Tony Scott, who combined for most of the Bluejackets points this season. The Bluejackets held on to the ifl spot in the state from about January until they lost. They finished the season 25-2. Pervis was one of the most highly recruited high school players in the country this year. He had such schools as Georgia Tech, Louisville. Maryland. Virginia, Georgetown, and a list of many more major colleges and universities looking at him. There was a college recruiter at just about every one of Savannah High's games this year. Pervis was named to the McDonald's High School All-American Team. There are only 25 High School players in the United States who are named to the McDonald's All-American Team; this is really an honor for both Pervis and Savannah High. Pervis also received top honors on the city and state level. Pervis is one of the most talented basketball players to come out of the Savannah area in a long time; not only in the Savannah area, but, the whole state of Georgia. Pervis averaged 27 points. 19 rebounds, and 7 block shots a game this year. Also this year, Pervis scored 45 points in one game and 40 points in another. Pervis is a great player and should do very well on the college scene. The Savannah High Annual Staff would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Pervis on the prestige he has brought to himself and Savannah High. Good luck in the future Pervis and always know we are all pulling for you. Pervis and his jersey 42 w ll be remembered at Savannah High FOREVER. In 1907 the school moved from its Barnard Street location to Chatham Academy on the corner of Bull and Oglethorpe in the building that now houses the Board of Education. By then. Savannah High had developed into a high school with an identity and spirit. Blue and white were adopted as school colors and the blue jacket was selected as a symbol of the school’s spirit. The school paper. The Blue and White, and the annual, The Blue Jacket, reflected the ideas, ideals and aspirations of the students and faculty. An increasing population and an expanding curriculum soon made the Chatham Academy building inadequate. Savannah educators, supported by the public, began to plan for a larger, more up-to-date building. The site at 500 Washington A venue, originally designated as the location for a luxury hotel, was chosen as the new home for Savannah High School. The imposing edifice, built with WPA funds and costing approximately $900,000, was dedicated on June 15, 1937. The Savannah Morning News described the ceremony as appropriate exercises which marked the long-sought culmination of a civic dream for adequate facilities for the education of boys and girls. Prior to the move to Washington Avenue, the question of changing the name from Savannah High School to James E. Oglethorpe High School was raised. After consideration, the Board of Education rejected this idea in a decision that was lauded by the Savannah public. The Savannah Morning News editorialized, It would have been a grievous mistake to have given the new school the name of any individual. It is in every respect a Savannah institution and as such should bear the name of the city it is to serve so magnificently. At the time it was built, it was the largest high school in the state. The building covers an area of 113,770 square feet; the distance around the perimeter is just under a quarter of a mile. Gone with the Wind could be written in its entirety on the 12,800 square feet of chalkboard. John Varnedoe was the first principal in the new building. The curriculum consisted of five different courses of study: (1) Classical, (2) Technical, (3) Scientific, (4) Commerical, and (5) General. Six hundred parents attended the first PTA meeting. The first complete graduating class - that of 1938 - consisted of 220 students. During World War II Savannah High sacrificed along with the rest of the country. Faculty members and students answered the call to duty. On at least one occasion, graduation was held in the morning to escape the blackouts of the evening. At the end of the January. 1943 graduation exercises, in a surprise, spontaneous gesture, the youngmen in the class stood and sang, ’ ’I’m in the Army Now. A bronze plaque in the foyer of the school honors those from Savannah High who made the supreme sacrifice. For a time. Commerical High shared the Washington Avenue building with Savannah High, but overcrowding caused Commercial to move to what is now Richard Arnold. In the 1950 s, continued growth forced Savannah High on double sessions with the junior high. The 1957 graduation class with 481 graduates more than doubled the original class of 1938. Eventually, the overcrowding was alleviated with the building of additional schools The early 1960 s found the dual school system, which had characterized the South, coming to an end. The racial barrier at Savannah High crumbled in 1963-64 when nine black students enrolled The late Sixties marked the trend toward short, short skirts for girls and long hair for boys. The Board of Education responded with a strict dress code which stated, Girls: Hemlines should be of reasonable length, preferably no more than 4 inches above the knee. Boys: Hair must be of reasonable length (none which will curl at the neck, come over the ears and eyes). No beards. In a world of rapidly changing fads and fashions, these rules proved difficult to enforce. The Savannah High School Student Council was in the vangard of those who requested the code be abolished. The Board eventually relented. Female teachers, too. won a fashion victory in 1970 when the regulation that stated. Girls’ clothing must give the appearance of a skirt, was interpreted to mean that women teachers might wear pantsuits as long as the sets were co-ordinated and the tops were hip length. The turbulent years of the Vietnam war passed. Unlike some of the high schools in the county. Savannah High never had to close its doors because of violent protests or unrest. Over the years Savannah High has played a vital role in the progress of Savannah. Through its portals have passed young men and women who have contributed to all aspects of society. Among them have been educators, ministers, business persons, lawyers, doctors, policemen, firefighters, generals in the army, foreign diplomats, professional athletes, judges, and mayors - not to mention exemplary parents and citizens. Multi- facted. Savannah High is many things to many people. It is a school with a rich heritage; yet, it is modern in its concept of teaching and learning. Never complacent, Savannah High is always striving to meet the demands of an ever-changing society. It is a school that offers a broad, diverse program of studies; whereas, at the same time a student may choose a special area and pursue in-depth instruction. It is a large school in size and enrollment, but it embodies the personal concern often associated with only small schools. The love and pride that the students through the years have felt in their hearts for Savannah High are conveyed in the Alma Mater, written by a Savannah High senior and first sung by the class of 1945: Our Alma Mater. SHS, You stand beneath a Southern Sky. O how our hearts are filled with pride When e’er your banner waves on high. Chorus Loyal to thee, our guiding light. We’ll ever praise the Blue and White. When from your classrooms we have gone Our places in the world to find. In memory we will come again And gather round old High School's Shrine. 245 « 246 247 248 249 250 252 253 254 EPILOGUE Producing a yearbook is not an easy task. As Editor-in-Chief of the 1985 Bluejacket I can say without a doubt that the Bluejacket staff and I have put every effort into producing a yearbook for your enjoyment. It was an uphill battle from the start. The work was hard, staying after school was trying, and coming up here during the weekend was straining. However, we managed to finish and now, looking back, we wouldn't have missed it for the world. Reading a yearbook and produc- ing a yearbook are two different things entirely. Not only did we have to produce the yearbook, but we also had to pay for it by selling M M’s and other candies. Thanks to our advisors Mrs. J. Smith and Mr. Bloodworth who kept us jumping.
