Coach Ramsey Last season Savannah High had a chance to earn a Region 3-AAAA playoff spot, but the Blue Jackets couldn't win one of their final three games and were on the outside looking in. The Blue Jack- ets were counting on determination and added experience to aid Savannah High this year. At times, the Blue Jackets showed great signs of bril- liance. This year's edition of the Blue Jackets im- proved their record by going 5-5, and 3-3 in the region. The Jackets were led by many outstanding seniors and standouts. They are thanked by all for their fine effort and ability. 130 131 Savannah Edges Windsor Forest In a most exciting homecoming game. Savannah High outlasted Windsor Forest 26-24. Not until the game’s final play was the outcome decided. After the Blue Jackets took a 20-16 lead at half on the strength of two of Richard Mattox touchdown passes and a four-yard run by Michael Simmons. Jackets Roll Over Bradwell Institute The Savannah High Blue Jackets destroyed any playoff hopes of the Bradwell Institute Tigers with a 14-6 upset. Everett Daniels scored on a 16 yard run. Eric Brown intercepted Craig Stafford’s pass at the Tiger 26 and returned it for a touchdown. The Jacket defense intercepted three passes in the game, which turned out to be the key in their win. Savannah High slips past Tompkins. It took one big play to decide a winner, a 93-yard kick off return by jacket running back Dwayne Miller which opened the second half. Miller caught Greg Thomas’ at the 7, started straight up the middle, then veered sharply to his left and raced the 93 yards untouched. Safety Jeff Gordon recovered 2 fumbles. In the final minute of the play Michael Simmons’ raced for 66 yards of the Jackets 142 yards in total offense, as the Jackets blanked Tompkins 7-0. BC Beats SHS Lutz, the Benedictine senior quarterback lofted a 22 yard touch- down pass to split end Brian Watson midway through the third quar- ter to give the Cadets a 7-0 victory. Blue Jackets Sting Beach Dwayne Miller ran for 162 yards and one touchdown for Savannah High's Blue Jackets as they stung the Beach bulldogs, 27-0. Eric Brown returned an interception of Theron Singleton’s for 75 yards for the first touchdown. James Mitchell picked up Vernard James’ fum- ble and rambled 36 yards for the touchdown. Jackets Edge Johnson Three times the Blue Jackets moved the ball inside the Johnson 30 and failed to get it into the end zone, but a fourth attempt was successful and Savannah High came away with a 8-7 victory to spoil the Atom Smashers’ homecoming. The touchdown was scored by runningback Michael Simmons on a 2-yard drive with a 2:30 left in the third period. 132 THE 1984 SAVANNAH HIGH BLUEJACKETS BOYS BASKETBALL A REBUILDING YEAR THE NEW BLUE JACKETS The Blue Jackets appear to have cap- tured the formula for a successful team again this year. After losing seven of their top eight players, which won nineteen games. Savannah High has regrouped and responded with a 20-5 record and the Re- gion 3-AAAA No. 10 ranking in the state. The Blue Jackets topped Groves High School 64-63 to win the Windsor Forest Christmas Tournament for the fourth con- secutive year. THE DREAM TEAM The Blue Jackets have gotten unexpect- ed dividends from 6-8 center Pervis Ellison who didn't even play last year, as the junior who has averaged 23 points, 15 rebounds and five blocked shots. Sophomore point guard Tony Scott has been another plus with an 18 point scoring average and seven assist a game. Senior guard Kenneth Wash- ington gunned in points to keep the Jack- ets alive. The Seniors showed strong lead- ership throughout the season, they include: Arnold Brown, Eric Bryant, Tris Roberson, Terrance Smith. Edward Snider. Kenneth Washington, and Carl Wil- liams. Ron Love, who has compiled a 56-17 record at Savannah High, should be com- mended for his personal efforts. A special thanks to the Senior Staff for getting the job done. 249 250 The History of Savannah High School Savannah High School had its genesis in 1888 when Boys’ High and Girls’ High combined to form the public high school in Savannah. In 1907 the school moved from its Barnard Street location to Chatham Academy on the corner of Bull and Oglethorpe in the building that now houses the Board of Education. By then, Savannah High had developed into a high school with an identity and spirit. Blue and white were adopted as school colors and the blue jacket was selected as a symbol of the school’s spirit. The school paper, The Blue and White, and the annual. The Blue Jacket, reflected the ideas, ideals and aspirations of the students and faculty. An increasing population and an expanding curriculum soon made the Chatham Academy building inadequate. Savannah educators, supported by the public, began to plan for a larger, more up-to-date building. The site at 500 Washington A venue, originally designated as the location for a luxury hotel, was chosen as the new home for Savannah High School. The imposing edifice, built with WPA funds and costing approximately $900,000, was dedicated on June 15, 1937. The Savannah Morning News described the ceremony as appropriate exercises which marked the long-sought culmination of a civic dream for adequate facilities for the education of boys and girls. Prior to the move to Washington Avenue, the question of changing the name from Savannah High School to James E. Oglethorpe High School was raised. After consideration, the Board of Education rejected this idea in a decision that was lauded by the Savannah public. The Savannah Morning News editorialized, It would have been a grievous mistake to have given the new school the name of any individual. It is in every respect a Savannah institution and as such should bear the name of the city it is to serve so magnificently. At the time it was built, it was the largest high school in the state. The building covers an area of 113,770 square feet; the distance around the perimeter is just under a quarter of a mile. Gone with the Wind could be written in its entirety on the 12,800 square feet of chalkboard. John Varnedoe was the first principal in the new building. The curriculum consisted of five different courses of study: (1) Classical, (2) Technical, (3) Scientific, (4) Commerical, and (5) General. Six hundred parents attended the first PTA meeting. The first complete graduating class - that of 1938 - consisted of 220 students. During World War II Savannah High sacrificed along with the rest of the country. Faculty members and students answered the call to duty. On at least one occasion, graduation was held in the morning to escape the blackouts of the evening. At the end of the January, 1943 graduation exercises, in a surprise, spontaneous gesture, the youngmen in the class stood and sang, I’m in the Army Now. A bronze plaque in the foyer of the school honors those from Savannah High who made the supreme sacrifice. For a time, Commerical High shared the Washington Avenue building with Savannah High, but overcrowding caused Commercial to move to what is now Richard Arnold. In the 1950’s, continued growth forced Savannah High on double sessions with the junior high. The 1957 graduation class with 481 graduates more than doubled the original class of 1938. Eventually, the overcrowding was alleviated with the building of additional schools. The early 1960 s found the dual school system, which had characterized the South, coming to an end. The racial barrier at Savannah High crumbled in 1963-64 when nine black students enrolled. The late Sixties marked the trend toward short, short skirts for girls and long hair for boys. The Board of Education responded with a strict dress code which stated, Girls: Hemlines should be of reasonable length, preferably no more than 4 inches above the knee. Boys: Hair must be of reasonable length (none which will curl at the neck, come over the ears and eyes). No beards. In a world of rapidly changing fads and fashions, these rules proved difficult to enforce. The Savannah High School Student Council was in the vangard of those who requested the code be abolished. The Board eventually relented. Female teachers, too, won a fashion victory in 1970 when the regulation that stated. Girls ’ clothing must give the appearance of a skirt, was interpreted to mean that women teachers might wear pantsuits as long as the sets were co-ordinated and the tops were hip length. The turbulent years of the Vietnam war passed. Unlike some of the high schools in the county. Savannah High never had to close its doors because of violent protests or unrest. Over the years Savannah High has played a vital role in the progress of Savannah. Through its portals have passed young men and women who have contributed to all aspects of society. Among them have been educators, ministers, business persons,lawyers, doctors, policemen, firefighters, generals in the army, foreign diplomats, professional athletes, judges.and mayors - not to mention exemplary parents and citizens. Multi-facted, Savannah High is many things to many people. It is a school with a rich heritage; yet. it is modern in its concept of teaching and learning. Never complacent. Savannah High is always striving to meet the demands of an ever-changing society. It is a school that offers a broad, diverse program of studies; whereas, at the same time a student may choose a special area and pursue in-depth instruction. It is a large school in size and enrollment, but it embodies the personal concern often associated with only small schools. The love and pride that the students through the years have felt in their hearts for Savannah High are conveyed in the Alma Mater, written by a Savannah High senior and first sung by the class of 1945: Our Alma Mater, SHS. You stand beneath a Southern Sky, O how our hearts are filled with pride When e’er your banner waves on high. Chorus Loyal to thee, our guiding light. We’ll ever praise the Blue and White.
