SAVANNAH HIGH SCHOOL 500 Washington Auenue Savannah, Georgia 31405 OFFICE OF THE PRINCIPAL (912) 238-5271 Dear Class of '83, What memories of Savannah High will you hold in your heart? Will you remember the long walks to school? the endless lunch lines? the building that was either too hot or too cold? the voice on the intercom that began, May I have your attention ...? Will you ever be able to forget the dull homework assignments, the boring lectures, and the hard exams - especially, the exams? Then there were the stern unsmiling faces that demanded that you move to class and that you do your work. Are these the images that you will take away from Savannah High when you graduate in June? You are smiling because you remember all of these things. However, you remember other things, too. You recall the joy that you experienced when you first grasped an idea or mastered a new concept. You think of the excitement you felt when the football team beat Johnson in the homecoming game and the celebration at the dance afterward. There was the understanding smile from one of your teachers when he she gave you another chance and the relief that you felt when you finished your term paper. At Savannah High you have experienced the good and bad, the positive and negative, the happy and unhappy, and the success and failure. Such have been your years at Savannah High and such is life. As Emerson so aptly pointed out, Every sweet hath its sour; every evil its good. I would not have you go forth into the world with cliches of shoot for the stars, follow your dream, and climb every mountain, ringing in your ears, believing that you will live happily ever after. I would not have you chase rainbows or joust with windmills; rather my wish for you is that you leave Savannah High School possessing the knowledge and the skills necessary to succeed and the courage and determination to pursue your ideals and dreams. My hope is that when you encounter frustration, loneliness and failure (and you will) that you will be prepared to overcome these obstacles and that they will not keep you from self-fulfillment. Failure is not defeat; it is another learning opportunity. In order to appreciate fully the joy of life, you must also taste its sadness. Perhaps the reason for this may be found in the observation made by Pope John XXIII, If God created shadows it was in order to better emphasize the light. Best wishes to you all. May your lives be filled with light. Sincerely, Interim Principal 19
