Faculty as the Savannah High School's Teacher Of The Year! Teacher of the Year 15 We dedicate the 1983 Blue Jacket to Mrs. Faye Siddall A truly devoted teacher 16 Dedicatee: Mrs. Faye Siddall 1983 Dedicatee 1983 Dedicatee Once in a while, you meet someone who stands out in your mind. Somehow just coming into contact with this person benefits your life. That is the way we, the Blue Jacket Staff, feel about a teacher who is very special to each and every one of us. Not only has this person given her time and energy to the staff, but she has also been completely devoted to the task of producing an outstanding yearbook . . . This is our way of saying thanks to someone who has been more than a teacher, or an advisor to us, she has been a friend. Mrs. Faye Siddall; we, the Blue Jacket Staff would feel very honored if you would accept this dedication of the 1983 Blue Jacket Yearbook with pride, because you deserve it! 17 Dedicatee Acting Principal - Mrs. Jordan Mrs. Shirley Jordan became the acting principal of Savannah High upon the transfer of Mr. Joel Formby. She has a Master of Education degree which she received from Georgia Southern College. Her optimistic attitude and understanding smile helped make the transition of principals a smooth one. 18 Faculty SAVANNAH HIGH SCHOOL 500 Washington Auenue Savannah, Georgia 31405 OFFICE OF THE PRINCIPAL (912) 238-5271 Dear Class of '83, What memories of Savannah High will you hold in your heart? Will you remember the long walks to school? the endless lunch lines? the building that was either too hot or too cold? the voice on the intercom that began, May I have your attention ...? Will you ever be able to forget the dull homework assignments, the boring lectures, and the hard exams - especially, the exams? Then there were the stern unsmiling faces that demanded that you move to class and that you do your work. Are these the images that you will take away from Savannah High when you graduate in June? You are smiling because you remember all of these things. However, you remember other things, too. You recall the joy that you experienced when you first grasped an idea or mastered a new concept. You think of the excitement you felt when the football team beat Johnson in the homecoming game and the celebration at the dance afterward. There was the understanding smile from one of your teachers when he she gave you another chance and the relief that you felt when you finished your term paper. At Savannah High you have experienced the good and bad, the positive and negative, the happy and unhappy, and the success and failure. Such have been your years at Savannah High and such is life. As Emerson so aptly pointed out, Every sweet hath its sour; every evil its good. I would not have you go forth into the world with cliches of shoot for the stars, follow your dream, and climb every mountain, ringing in your ears, believing that you will live happily ever after. I would not have you chase rainbows or joust with windmills; rather my wish for you is that you leave Savannah High School possessing the knowledge and the skills necessary to succeed and the courage and determination to pursue your ideals and dreams. My hope is that when you encounter frustration, loneliness and failure (and you will) that you will be prepared to overcome these obstacles and that they will not keep you from self-fulfillment. Failure is not defeat; it is another learning opportunity. In order to appreciate fully the joy of life, you must also taste its sadness. Perhaps the reason for this may be found in the observation made by Pope John XXIII, If God created shadows it was in order to better emphasize the light. Best wishes to you all. May your lives be filled with light. Sincerely, Interim Principal 19 20 Faculty: Assistant Principals MR. OWENS MR. SMITH Asst. Principals Mrs. Oliver Asst. Principals Mr. Manior Acting Asst. What he did get was a solid team who came just a game away from the playoffs. This year's edition of the Blue Jackets also improved on last year's 3-7 record by going 4-6. They started off magnificently by winning their first seven games. For the third Christmas Tour- nament championship in as many years, the Blue Jackets defeated Groves, Benedictine, and Windsor Forest. During the last half of the season, the Jackets won eleven straight games, finishing 8th in the state, with an overall region 3-AAAA record of 18 wins - 4 losses. This established the Jackets as one of the strongest teams in state competition. The Blue Jackets received strong leadership from seniors - Chris Bush, Anthony Ervin, Jack Grant, Eric Jones, Steven Kelly, and Kevin McGraw. Coach Ronald Lambert brought his team to a respectable 5-7 region record. Starting off slow (losing the first three games) the Lady Jackets were finally ignited with a 37-14 victory over Groves. The Lady Jackets went on to win 5 out of 6 of their next games. Although inconsistency haunted the Lady Jackets, they had an impressive season. Too much inexperience and not enough shooting spelled the loss of many games. The Lady Jackets are a young team, but they are destined for success in the years to come. In order to do this, we had to accomplish many things like raising $ 18,000(yes, thatfigure is correctly stated), selling thousands of boxes of M M's, and meeting those $? !! deadlines! When one looks through this yearbook, he will look for himself, his friends, and familiar events; however, when we, the Blue Jacket Staff, look through this book, we feel a sense of personal satisfaction. Not only did we accomplish things never before accomplished in other Savannah High School yearbooks like 48 pages of beautiful color. We also had the privilege of recording all the memories we shared of our days as annual animals . We enjoyed every minute, the close friendships, the problems, the aggravations, and most of all the laughter and the fun that always seemed to be inside that little room no matter what the situation. Having friends and being close to someone is one thing, but when you can work with someone and still have close bonds with those people then you know you have really accomplished something. MRS. Siddall and MRS. Garcia, A simple thank you can in no way express our gratitude for all the effort and time you have put into this yearbook. We would not have made it without you two. You have helped us get out of trouble, set us straight, and put up with a lot of excuses and jokes. Maybe that is why we all look to you as real friends as well as TERRIFIC advisors! We will always have these memories to hold on to. They have been some of the best! Sherri Sutton John Robinson - Editors of the 1983 Blue Jacket The History of Savannah High School Savannah High School had its genesis in 1888 when Boys' High and Girls' High combined to form the public high school in Savannah. In 1907 the school moved from its Barnard Street location to Chatham Academy on the corner of Bull and Oglethorpe in the building that now houses the Board of Education. By then, Savannah High had developed into a high school with an identity and spirit. Blue and white were adopted as school colors and the blue jacket was selected as a symbol of the school's spirit. The school paper. The Blue and White, and the annual, The Blue Jacket, reflected the ideas, ideals and aspirations of the students and faculty. An increasing population and an expanding curriculum soon made the Chatham Academy building inadequate. Savannah educators, supported by the public, began to plan for a larger, more up-to-date building. The site at 500 Washington A venue, originally designated as the location for a luxury hotel, was chosen as the new home for Savannah High School. The imposing edifice, built with WPA funds and costing approximately $900,000, was dedicated on June 15, 1937. The Savannah Morning News described the ceremony as appropriate exercises which marked the long-sought culmination of a civic dream for adequate facilities for the education of boys and girls. Prior to the move to Washington A venue, the question of changing the name from Savannah High School to James E. Oglethorpe High School was raised. After consideration, the Board of Education rejected this idea in a decision that was lauded by the Savannah public, The Savannah Morning News editorialized, It would have been a grievous mistake to have given the new school the name of any individual. It is in every respect a Savannah institution and as such should bear the name of the city it is to serve so magnificently. At the time it was built, it was the largest high school in the state. The building covers an area of 113,770 square feet; the distance around the perimeter is just under a quarter of a mile. Gone with the Wind could be written in its entirety on the 12,800 square feet of chalkboard. John Varnedoe was the first principal in the new building. The curriculum consisted of five different courses of study: (1) Classical, (2) Technical, (3) Scientific, (4) Commerical, and (5) General. Six hundred parents attended the first PTA meeting. The first complete graduating class - that of 1938 - consisted of 220 students. During World War H Savannah High sacrificed along with the rest of the country. Faculty members and students answered the call to duty. On at least one occasion, graduation was held in the morning to escape the blackouts of the evening. At the end of the January, 1943 graduation exercises, in a surprise, spontaneous gesture, the youngmen in the class stood and sang, I'm in the Army Now. A bronze plaque in the foyer of the school honors those from Savannah High who made the supreme sacrifice. For a time, Commerical High shared the Washington Avenue building with Savannah High, but overcrowding caused Commercial to move to what is now Richard Arnold. In the 1950's, continued growth forced Savannah High on double sessions with the junior high. The 1957 graduation class with 481 graduates more than doubled the original class of 1938. Eventually, the overcrowding was alleviated with the building of additional schools. The early 1960's found the dual school system, which had characterized the South, coming to an end. The racial barrier at Savannah High crumbled in 1963-64 when nine black students enrolled. The late Sixties marked the trend toward short, short skirts for girls and long hair for boys. The Board of Education responded with a strict dress code which stated, Girls: Hemlines should be of reasonable length, preferably no more than 4 inches above the knee. Boys: Hair must be of reasonable length (none which will curl at the neck, come over the ears and eyes). No beards. In a world of rapidly changing fads and fashions, these rules proved difficult to enforce. The Savannah High School Student Council was in the vangard of those who requested the code be abolished. The Board eventually relented. Female teachers, too, won a fashion victory in 1970 when the regulation that stated. Girls' clothing must give the appearance of a skirt, was interpreted to mean that women teachers might wear pantsuits as long as the sets were co-ordinated and the tops were hip length. The turbulent years of the Vietnam war passed. Unlike some of the high schools in the county. Savannah High never had to dose its doors because of violent protests or unrest. Over the years Savannah High has played a vital role in the progress of Savannah. Through its portals have passed young men and women who have contributed to all aspects of society. Among them have been educators, ministers, business personsjawyers, doctors, policemen, firefighters, generals in the army, foreign diplomats, professional athletes, judges, and mayors - not to mention exemplary parents and citizens. Multi-facted. Savannah High is many things to many people. It is a school with a rich heritage; yet, it is modern in its concept of teaching and learning. Never complacent. Savannah High is always striving to meet the demands of an ever-changing society. It is a school that offers a broad, diverse program of studies; whereas, at the same time a student may choose a special area and pursue in-depth instruction. It is a large school in size and enrollment, but it embodies the personal concern often associated with only small schools. The love and pride that the students through the years have felt in their hearts for Savannah High are conveyed in the Alma Mater, written by a Savannah High senior and first sung by the class of 1945: Our Alma Mater, SHS, You stand beneath a Southern Sky, O how our hearts are filled with pride When e'er your banner waves on high. Chorus Loyal to thee, our guiding light. We'II ever praise the Blue and White. When from your classrooms we have gone Our places in the world to find.
