1973 BLUE JACKET Savannah High School Savannah, Georgia Volume: 53 3 Time was waiting. You could not be blamed for walking blindly along, only bumping into Shadows. How was it really? Did anyone ever see? Were we too wrapped up In petty words and childlike voices to see the larger scale? 12 Did you taste, or smell, or hear the feeling of Existence? Did you Smile once without your well- trained Laugh? Did you cry because you could Not Accept that you were not great Enough? We have known teachers and administrators (good and bad) and we have felt the need to have a one-to-one relationship with someone, somewhere. Someone recognized this need and tried to fill it for us. She gave more than what was just necessary”; She gave a genuine concern, friendship, and interest. Revealing herself as a person, she saw you as a person; Never judging but by what you were. With her there was the freedom to be honest; to be an individual. All who opened their hearts instantly saw what can be when someone tries, it is doubtful that she will ever realize how much every gesture has meant. But to those of us who have been fortunate enough to know her, she has made the days of this year count. Therefore, it is to her effort to the spirit it inspires, and to the person, Janette Carroll, We dedicate this volume: Blue Jacket 1973 17 Mathematics Absolute in its severity . . pres- enting a symmetry and balance to life when we learn to work through regu- lations and possibilities . some- times odd problems only we must accurately measure Time in hours, days, and years . . . The Blue Machines' defensive unit was strong and rarely let the opposition’s offense make substantial gains. This defensive unit was led by Leroy Harris and Bill Holli- day. The offensive unit was usually aggressive. The passing attack was led by Billy Fields and Joey Tanguay. The receivers were Timmy Phillips and Walter Thomas. The ground attack was super Leroy Harris aver- aged 100 yards per game and was the city's second leading scorer. 99 100 Richard Arnold Nips Jackets in Opener The powerful Blue Jacket defensive unit allowed only a minus four yards rush- ing as the Eagles upset the Jackets. Savannah High only lost by one point which was an extra point made after Arnold s Jo Jo White ran a touchdown. The Jackets’ single score came when Timmy Phillips intercepted a pass from R A Dan Ellison. The kick for the extra point sealed S. H. S. doom In the final minutes of the game the offensive unit made a gallant but fruitless effort to come from behind After Billy Fields completed four passes to move the ball to the 20 as the clock ran out. The game was over and the Jackets had lost but on the statistics column the Jackets proved to be Number I. 101 Glynn Upsets Blue Jackets as Lights Go Out The Glynn Academy Red Terrors nipped the Blue Jackets in a come- from-behind victory. The strong SHS offensive unit made a fine showing during the first half of the game with three touch- downs. These scores were made by Fields, Holliday and Watson. Leroy Harris booted two extra points At the beginning of the third quar- ter a transformer blew out and the game was delayed as the players lay on the field in the dark. After the lights came back on the Jackets’ aggressiveness was gone. The Red Terrors made a tremendous come- back and tied the game at 20-20 with only minutes to play In the final sec- onds of the game the Red Terrors booted a 45 yard field goal which sealed SHS's doom The game ended 23-20, providing a win for the Ter- rors. 102 103 SHS Romps Over Johnson The offensive and defensive units of the Savannah High Blue Jackets seemed almost flawless as they made an easy 49-0 win over Johnson. The Blue Machine’s ground game, led by Leroy Harris, picked up 403 yards Harris scored three touch- downs and rushed for 158 yards. Michael Gadson scored two touch- downs. The other touchdowns were made by Fields. Phillips and Walker. Tim Garrett ran for 3 two point con- versions. The powerful defensive unit allowed only 68 yards rushing and completely stopped the Johnson attack. The Jackets for the first time looked like championship material. 104 Bulldogs Zipped by Jackets Leroy Harris paced the SHS boys in Blue to a 27-0 win over the Beach Bulldogs Harris, better known as Monk.' scored three touchdowns and rushed for 83 yards Clifford Perry scored the other Jacket touch- down on a 52 yard interception. Clar- ence Pawloski kicked three extra points. The defensive unit stopped Beach with only 24 total yards The unit was led by Bill Holliday. Andy Mendonsa also was very effective on defense SHS Nips Wayne County Quarterback Joey Tanguay com- pleted a touchdown pass to Timmy Phillips and Clarence Pawloski booted the extra point as the clock ran out to give the Blue Machine a 7- 6 victory over Wayne County. This touchdown was the reward of efforts to come from behind. It was the cli- max of a 38 yard drive with only 36 seconds on the clock. The Jackets seemed to be having trouble with the officials and were penalized 102 yards. Despite this problem the well disciplined Jackets come out on top. 106 Tompkins Stopped by SHS The powerful Blue Jackets once again used its strong ground game in a 14-0 shut-out over the Tompkins Wolverines. The strong defensive unit, led by Holliday and Gadson. allowed the Wolverines to enter SHS territory only twice during the game and the offense moved at will. Gadson and Harris scored the two touchdowns and Pawloski added the extra points. Harris with his fantastic strength and speed pushed for 172 yards. Timmy Phillips and Walter Thomas also made several fine catches of passes from Tanguay 107 Jackets Win Color It 27-13 Once again Leroy Harris and Clif- ford Perry led the Jackets' offensive unit in the 27-13 victory over Bruns- wick. Harris scored only once but ran for 117 yards. Clifford Perry scored two touchdowns one being a 79 yard kickoff return. Mike Gadson also scored a touchdown and Pawloski kicked three extra points. The Jack- ets made 222 yards in ground gains. The Jackets once again proved their potential. Windsor Defeats SHS Homecoming Game The Windsor Forest Knights completely crushed Savannah High in a 24-0 defeat of the Blue Jackets. It seemed the Jackets could never get fired up and were stopped in all areas of the statistics. Sybil Nixon was elected Homecoming Queen during halftime activities. Janet Beasley and Leslie Grant tied for first runner-up. 109 SHS Loses To BC The SHS Blue Jackets lost the closing game of the season by a score of 15-7 to the BC Cadets. The Jackets came out strong the first half with the defense holding the Cadets very well. The offense was also strong, led by Leroy Harris, who made the only SHS score on an 80 yard romp. After the halftime the Jackets seemed to have lost their ambition to win and BC controlled the remainder of the game. SHS lost again 10 Football Roster Bill Thomas Bill Fields Joey Tanguay Leroy Harris Jody Clonts Clifford Perry Michael Owens Andy Mendonsa Tim Garrett Ivan Clark Kenny Cechanowski Jim Lynch Walter Thomas Mike Loper Jim Constantine Albert Shunemann Danny Garrett Terry Holmes Mike Williams Larry Branson Rocky Brower Dewey Dimsdale Mark Redding Chris Bragg Stanley Walker Michael Gadson George Barthlemess Raymon Beasley Tony Watson Larry Sims Mike Smith Bill Holliday Clarence Pawlaski Timmy Phillips Marty Marmolejo in Jacket Cagers Are Determined The Blue Jacket basketball team for the 1973 season was not much different from the teams that pre- ceded them — except for the fact that they were defending state cham- pions. For this reason the opponents which were to face the Jackets knew what to expect. The S.H.S. Boys in Blue were ready to prove they were still number one. Also as usual, the Jackets had experienced personnel. Returning was 6-9 Lucius Luke Foster who was a member of the last year's State AAA all-tournament team Two year starter Gregg Ewaldsen also returned to the forward position. Danny Her- nandez was also a returning starter who is known for his excellent ball handling. Rounding out the starting five were 6-6 Ronald Simmons and 6- 1 Roney Clarke. The entire starting team presented a scoring treat any- time they got hold of the ball. The S.H.S. bench also was full of talent and could be called upon at anytime to help the team. David Walker, Perry Grant, and Archie Simmons were always surprising everyone with their magnificent back-up help The Jackets had great leadership under Harold Scott and his assistant Coach Brown. The Jackets had excellent coaching, ability and sup- port of the fans. With all these factors in favor of the Jackets they will still need much determination to once again become State Champs 115 Jackets Show Their Stuff The opening game of the season showed Savannah High completely dominating the Groves Rebels in an easy 70-31 win. The powerful Jack- ets returned to Tompkins the follow- ing week and treated them as harshly as they had the Rebels. They com- pletely dominated the Wolverines in the 96-48 victory. Coach Scott emp- tied the bench to let everyone show their talents. Big Lucius Foster com- pletely dominated the boards in both games. The first real challenge of the season came from Windsor Forest whose Knights held the “Big Blue to a low scoring battle. The Jackets did emerge the victor by a score of 48- 44. SHS Edges Beach to Take First in Christmas Classic The Jackets entered the Christmas tournament undefeated but had to face several tough teams. The ‘Blue Boys” won their first round victory against Windsor Forest by eight points. The Jackets also won the semifinal game by the same margin against the Jenkins Warriors. The Jackets had to face Beach in the final round which the Jackets won 58-54. Lucuis Foster was high for Savannah High with 18 points. Gregg Ewaldsen followed with 16 and Danny Hernandez dumped in 12. The Jackets placed an unprecedented five men on the all tourney team. These were Lucius Foster, Gregg Ewaldsen, Danny Hernandez, Roney Clarke and Ronald Simmons. Gregg Ewaldsen was also given the Most Valuable Player award They had proven their potential. 117 Jackets Continue Streak The still undefeated Jackets continued to add victories to their belt in games against B.C., Richard Arnold and John- son The Blue Machine had slight diffi- culty in defeating the Benedictine Cadets by a score of 48 to 43 Next the Jackets went on to score an easy victory over Richard Arnold. 85-52. The boys contin- ued showing their potential by scoring at will and clearing the boards Savannah High then proceeded to dismantle the Johnson Atom Smashers. The Jackets now ranked number one in State AAA basketball, defeated them 57 to 41. Lucius Foster was named best player in the State and Gregg Ewaldsen was ranked fifth in a poll by the Atlanta Jour- nal Jackets The Blue Jacket basketball team kept on winning after the midway point of the season. They won several close games but as a rule, the Jackets won with ease. Savannah High School easily defeated Richard Arnold by a score of 61 to 42. Lucius Foster and Gregg Ewaldsen always played consistent games with great help from Roney Clark and Ronald Simmons. Danny Hernandez was also a great factor in determining the out- come of the season. After several Continue to Win easy wins, the Jackets defeated Beach by a score of 62 to 59. Next, after the victory over Beach, the Jackets won in a 73-43 victory over Tompkins. The only loss in the regu- lar season came in the following game with Beach. The Bulldogs defeated the Jackets in a close game by a score of 52 to 48. Following this loss, the Jackets were never again in trouble for the remainder of the sea- son. 120 SHS Wraps Up Regular Season The last five games in regular sea- son play were easy victories for the Jackets They defeated Jenkins by a score of 52-48. Then, SHS romped over Windsor Forest, Groves, and Waycross in that order The Boys in Blue finished the regular seasbn with a record of 22 wins and only one loss. This, in itself, is a fantastic achievement for a truly fantastic team. 121 Savannah High Defeats Way cross SHS easily dissassembled the Way- cross offense in the semi-final action of the region tournament. The 64-46 victory gave the Jackets the right to play Jenkins for the championship. Once again the Savannah High giants completely dominated the smaller Waycross team on both the offensive and defensive boards. The strict discipline of the Jackets was a major factor in determining the out- come of the lopsided game SHS Wins Region 3AAA In the final round of Region 3AAA action Savannah High defeated Jen- kins by a score of 45-42. This was a very exciting game in which the entire team gave their all. Coach Scott did an excellent job in directing the boys in this close game Lucius Foster did an excellent job on Jenkin's James Johnson and Gregg Ewaldsen added much to the SHS victory. Because of their actions Gregg Ewaldsen and Lucius Foster were voted Co-Most Valuable players in the region tournament. During the game, all of the SHS players kept giv- ing support to the players on the floor. With this kind of team loyalty Savannah High will still be respected, win or lose. 123 Columbus Is Victim Of SHS The Savannah High Blue Jackets treated the Columbus High basketball team in the same manner in which they treated 26 other teams this sea- son. The taller Jackets completely dominated the rebound column as they took an easy 74-52 victory. Coach Scott used the starting five but also played several substitutions in the latter moments of the game. In the final quarter, Lucius Foster sprained his ankle but the rest of the team carried on to finish the game. After the opening minutes of the game Columbus was already far behind and did not have enough man power to come back from the large deficit. 124 Jackets Are Defeated In quarter final action of the State AAA Tournament in Macon the Savannah High Blue Jackets lost a very close game to Valdosta. The Jackets were handicapped in the fact that big Lucius Foster was playing with a bad sprain on his ankle. Even with this disability Big Luke played a great game and had much help from the rest of the squad. The game was really down to the wire. With seconds left, the score was tied a 47 all. Roney Clarke was bringing the ball down court for the Jackets when a controversial walking penalty was called. Valdosta got control of the ball and pulled ahead 49-47 as the time ran out. 125 Region 3-AAA Champions Robbie Mitchell Jerome White Henry Thornton Roney Clark Dannel Gilliard Archie Simmons Danny Hernandez Perry Grant Paul Bryan Roland Brisbane Gregg Ewaldsen Marc Tyke” Howard Richard Mike Marvin Hamilton Ronald Simmons Mike Williams David Walker Lucius Foster 126 B-Team Has Impressive Win The SHS Baby Jackets won 16 games against 3 losses The young cagers showed the Savannah High spirit and gave the school a good outlook for the future. The Jackets have several good batters returning such as Joey Tan- guay, Joe Lee. Jerry McNair, and Max Forehand Many of the other players can also handle the bats well The pitching staff included Bucky Bryabt. Larry Sims, and Joey Tan- guay These boys lacked experience this past year but should help the Jackets toward a successful season next year The only players the Jackets will lose are Earl McClure and Danny Durden who were always adding spirit and experience. Larry Williams, who was named most valuable member of the Region, won several first place ribbons. Other valuable members of the Jacket team were Frank Brooks. Gregg Ewaldsen, Gibby Barnes, and Robert Grant. With all but Larry Williams and Barnes returning for another year we hope the cindermen can once again show the talent we have at SHS in the 73 season. 134 Golf The SHS golf team was not one of the strong points of the athletic pro- gram here at Savannah High. The team placed only sixth in the region Members of the team were Tommy Waters. Brian Minkovitz. Richard Solomans. and Howard Barrett. Hollis Stacy was also a member of the team. 135 T.SHS Morning comes upon us with a bang, a ringing that awakens (and sometimes fails to awaken) the ani- mal instinct in us of urgency. We knew that we were only as stable as the wind that would soon sail us into different directions; but it was important that before we went on, we leave behind a visible proof of our friendships and lives together We may be apart, but we are as close together as the pages in this book As these pages turn so do our lives, existing only from one moment to another, existing as memories we know are far behind us now. These pages represent much of our feelings and a great part of our lives. They mean the success and failures of all our hopes and dreams. They remind us of times of working with and for people we love They also bring back the understanding and forgiveness which must exist in all of us in order to remember happi- ness. Now, as we drift out. watching the shore fade into memories, we dream of the time that perhaps, for a moment, our paths will cross again. 276 277 iiiUp.T For we have shared So much of one another That parts of us Are exchanged forever. 27 281 Yet keep patient — In but a little while In times not yet known — We shall look back In different forms — And meet again in memory — Once more stretching forth Our Love To greet a Friend. 283 Alma Mater Our Alma Mater, S.H.S. You stand beneath a southern sky. Oh, how our hearts are filled with pride. Whene'er your banner waves on high. Loyal to thee, our guiding light, We'll ever praise the Blue and White. When from your classrooms we have gone. Our places in the world find. In mem'ry we will come again. And gather 'round old High School's shrine. Loyal to thee, our guiding light. We'll ever praise the Blue and White. n
