4 Q7 Snow tl MATH Al D AFTERMATH Mathematics Department Mathematics has not always occupied the place in the educational program of the secondary school that it occupies today, Instead, it has come to its present status through a long and interesting period of evolution, Since the beginning ot secondary education in this country the offerings ot the schools have heen influenced by changing educational ideals and changing practical considerations. Mathematics is literally indispensahle in the study ot' phys- ics, chemistry, and astronomy. It is no longer possihle to pursue the study of hiological phenomena very far heyond the early descriptive stages without the aid of mathematical analyf sis and treatment. By continually impressing upon the students the relation- ship and application of mathematics to other school subjects, the teachers of mathematics attempt to stimulate interest in the study ot mathematics and at the same time give the stu- dents a more comprehensive and complete idea of the nature of other related subjects.
