E ighly-lwo 1948 glue gacket gootball Season By DENSON HUTCHINSON The Jackets opened the season with a surpris- ing 19-0 victory over a fighting team from Mexico. Before 5 minutes of play were over Bill Royal tossed a 35-yard pass to the waiting arms of Wylie Griffin who was in the clear in the end zone. Grif- fin9s boot was good. After Ben New intercepted a pass and ran it back for 30 yards in the fourth quarter, Griffin bucked for two and pay dirt. It was then Kowboy Campbellgs turn to intercept a pass which he ran back 50 yards to the 20. Royal then flipped an aerial t0 Wong for 6 to make the final score 19-0. In the Henry Grady game it was Bill Royal and blocking at the right time that gave the Jackets a 21-7 victory. Royal first scored on a 57-yard run back of a punt in the first quarter. The Gray Knights tied the score in the second quarter 7-7 but while the Atlantians were still cheering, Royal scored on the kick-off behind perfect downfield blocking. In the fourth quar- ter, John Groover and Bill Dearing teamed to carry the ball 51 yards. John Campbell booted the extra points. Lanier, later to win the G.I.A.A., held the Jack- ets to a 6-6 tie. Again it was Bill Royal, who in the second quarter ran 59 yards, rested a play, then took off for 18 more to score the big 6 for the Jackets. The Jacket defense was caught napping as an end-around paid off for Lanier,s 6. Dick Leech blocked Lanier,s attempt kick. Bill Royal and Savannah Hi9s famous 46Lalapa- looza9, paid off against Glynn to win 6-0. The 51-yard gallop by Royal handed Glynn their first defeat of the season. A f6fighting mad3 team took the field against G.M.A. and handed them a 26-0 defeat. On the first play of the second quarter Red McKenzie passed to John Groover for 6 after Bill Campbell recovered a fumble, Groover and Griffin carried the ball over with 2Lalapalooza39 Groover and Griffin carried to the 1 where Griffin smashed through. The final score came when Groover took a punt on his 47-yard line and ran to score behind near perfect blocking. John Campbell and Wylie Griffin kicked the extra points. The Jackets suffered their first defeat of the season at the hands of Columbus by a 13-7 score. Columbus scored before the game was 3 minutes old. After passing to Dick Leech to the 5, Red McKenzie battered the ball over. John Camp- bellis extra point was good. Columbus won the game in the final quarter. It was Jimmy Wong, the fighting Irishman; who swam for 20 yards through the mud for the J ackets, first score against Murphy High, but Murphy came back and led at half time 7-6. In the third quarter Irish Jim Wong intercepted a- pass and ran 45 yards to sew the game up for the . Jackets 12-7. Richmofld Academy of Augusta handed the J ackets their second defeat of the season. Both teams played a defensive ground ball game, but it was Richmond who won 7-0. The boys in blue edged Commercial 13-12 in the mud bowl at Grayson Stadium. It was J ohn Campbell who won for the J ackets when he ran the big extra point over. It was also Campbell who blocked a kick in the first quarter that Dave Barnhill fell on over the goal for the first score. In the second quarter Bill Dearing carried 13 yards to score. The Cobras scored twice in the third quarter. For the first time in 10 years the Jackets were beaten by Benedictine, 14-6. After a see-sawing first quarter the Jackets scored in the second on a pass from McKenzie to Billy Harrell. On the opening play of the third quarter B. C. scored. Later in the same quarter they bucked over for the winning score. Season 4 Won 7, Lost 3, Tied 1. This season our basketball team won the co-city championship and came in third place in the all-regional tournament. The Jackets journeyed to Atlanta to play in the state tournament but lost their very first tournament game to North Fulton High of Atlanta.Perhaps the iiheartbreakelpg of the season was the 47-46 loss of the Jackets to Richmond Academy in the regional semi-finals. It was a good season, though, and all of us are very proud of the way our boys gave their best for S.H.S. The total of games won for the season was, includ- ing the tournament games, 16. The total of losses only numbered four. Next season,s squad will be minus several of our very best players. The freshman football team this year suffered many of the same handicaps as the varsity. They were small, inexperienced, and constantly hindered by injuries but nevertheless possessed a great deal of spunk and eagerness to learn under a swell coach. The freshmenas first game was September 22 in Vidalia. Although the backs ran good and the line fought hard, the experience of the larger Vidalia team resulted in the 19 t0 0 defeat. The next game was October 6 in Jesup, the freshmen opened strong and drove deep into Jesupas territory with hard running Bobby Adams and Landy New and smart quarter-backing by Lindy Willis but the much larger Jesup team, led by all-state Hurley Jones, soon ran up a 38 t0 0 score mostly against 2nd and 3rd string fresh men linesmen and backs. The freshmen had a long delay before their next game and took good advantage of their opportunity to mold their plays into perfection. Under the expert coaching of Carl Griffin the linemen shaped into a wall of blockers for the shifty backs and at last gave them a chance to run. In Brunswick on November 4 the long weeks of practice payed off for the eager freshman team as they trounced the Glynn Acad- emy iiBi, team 13 t0 0. They had previously been undefeated in three years. The freshmen,s first score of the year came on a quarterback sn eak by Lindy Willis after he had piloted his team the length of the field. The second tally came on a twenty-yard pass from Willis t0 Cobb who then cleverly Iateralled to Bobby Adams who com- pleted the last twenty yards unmolested. Cobb caught a spot pass from Willis for the extra point. Outstanding in the backfield for the year was Landy New, Bobby Adams, and Fred Pierce. In the line the standouts were Jack Weiland and Jack DeLoach, Gene Hutchinson, Frank Smith, Jimmy Norris, and Thad Welch. eighty-six iris, gaskethall cgeam First row, left to right: Margaret Morrison tAlternate Captaint ; Sarah Wade tCaptaim ; Patsy Trost, Mary Dale Arnold. The School Store is an organization of the Student Council. It was started in September, 1948. During the summer an unofficial council met. At these meetings various committees of the Student Council were set up, one of which was the School Store Committee. All during the preceding term suggestions were made about havi pg 3 school store where the students could buy their school supplies. After an investigation of wholesalers was made and the goods'i'were gotten and marked, there was nothing left beside the room for the store. Then in the semester of January, 1949, your School Store had its opening in the Student Council oHices, room 122 of Savannah High School. Students became clerks by generously giving up their study hall periods. These students who volun- tarily gave their services not only got valuable experience but to ok on a responsibility as well.
