The study of the four foreign tongues has varied indi- vidual objectives, practices, and ultimate goals. The primary objectives in the teaching of Latin are to train the mind in analytical and logical thinking, and to develop a greater competence in the use of English and the Romance lan- guages. On more advanced levels of study, the department seeks to give the student an appreciation of Latin literature and of Roman history and culture. The most immediate purpose of the Greek department, es- tablished for the first time this year, is to give students a direct insight into the culture of the first great Western civilization through reading some of its great authors in the original.
