Leaving the Mohawk Valley a few miles below Yah- nun-dah-sls, Know Utical, the trail entered the forest, continued over the hill, and crossed the Sagh-da-que-da, the present site of the village of Sauquoit. The Oneldas, using their picturesque language gave the region its name of Sagh-da- que-da, meaning smooth ronmd stones. The Iroquois, passing East and West on errands of peace and war frequent- ly stopped at the creek to rest and replenish their food. The Sauquoit, with numerous brooks pouring their cold waters into it, made an ideal trout stream, and became a favorite fishing ground of the Six Nations. The route over the hill was favored by the Indians, for lt avoided the swampy ground of the trail at Yah-nun-dah-sis. For this same reason it was favored by the early settlers who came into the Sauquoit Valley. From this early history and Indian lore, the Sauquoit Valley Central School adopted, some years ago, thf title of its Yearbook -- the Saghdaquadah Siren. 2 nv 1 K?l,'i!5i-5 5 fifi' ' V1-,V l'.'.,-H.. You, who are about to leave our school family will face new situations, new sets of conditions, new associations which will demand different responses on your part. We, the faculty, who have attempted to show you some of the paths, realize that we, or for that matter no other group, could ever adequately prepare you to meet many of these problems with set patterns of behavior. Life in 1948 is entirely too complicated to begin to establish rules of conduct or action to meet all conditions. Never- theless, there are certainf basic principles of good living which are worth following. You should realize that these have been stressed, emphasized and repeated time and time again for your benefit, not only in groups, but also on an individual basis. In our small school we have had an opportunity to know each other as individuals much better than is possible in larger school systems where pupils frequently go through four years of high school without ev- er getting acquainted with each other as a group or with the staff, except perhaps in small groups or cliques. Frequently you, no doubt, have felt this was a distinct handicap, for oftentimes we have antici- pated some of your moves and have taken precautionary measures. By and large, you have had a fairly easy task and way of living while attending your school, particularly if you did your work with a fair degree of consistency, perserverance and accuracy. Such habits of industry and good conduct should pay dividends to you in the long run. To be successful in life you need not necessarily become millionaires or acquire more than your share of the world's goods. We hope you will be the type of person others will look up to - one whom others will feel they can trust, go to for help and advice. In other words, be a friend. Conduct is a good test of intelligence. Don't follow the crowd just for the sake of the ride. Use those gifts which you have - make them count. The future will be what you want to make of itg opportunities are wide open - in fact, they so far surpass any we have ever had that there is no comparison: but in your zeal for suc- cess - be true to yourself. We, who remain behind, wish you good luck. We shall always be interested in your progress. Come back to see us, we shall always be glad to see you. xfdifewg .1- W 515 F5532 Z , iff 19 QE: , if -JJ, , ..W if Q: Ea -lg. EDITORIAL COMMENT by Sports Editor, Ed Thomas ECAUSE of the early date of assembling the yearbook records, the Staff each year finds it difficult to include material about the spring sports of the current year. This year we are adopting the policy followed by so many schools of recording the names of team members and scores of baseball and track of the previous spring, 1947. We hope this may establish a prec- edent to be followed by the Sports Editors of the future and so be a partial solution to this prob- lem. 26 1 INTER-VALLEY LEAGUE MEET N the spring of 1947 the first Inter-Valley League Track Meet was held after a lapse of several years. Ioan Gibbons Advisers Mr. Payne. . . . . .Mrs. Prichard E Student Council is an organization made up of student representatives from each home room, and four officers elected by the entire student body. Each class chooses, in addition to the officers elected, two representatives. During the year the Student Council sponsors assemblies, the expense of which is paid in part by taxing each student. Through the year the Council sold school supplies during lunch periods in the cafeteria. After school a candy store was open, with members of the council, supervised by Mr. Payne or Mrs. Prichard, in charge of sales. Every year the Council heads a project. This year money was raised to purchase records for the radio phonograph. In January, the Student Council invited students of other schools to visit us during 'regular sessions of a school day, in order that we might become better acquainted with our neighbors and establish a greater friendship between schools. Another project was a revision of the Constitution of the Student Body. Committees were chosen to carry out the plans for the necessary revision. We students like having a Student Council made up of our representatives. We- feel that the Council works for the interests of the student body and that we enjoy many privileges and benefits through their efforts. 33 ? SW! We have strived for some measure of origin- i ality, and have tried to keep prejudice or favoritism in any form out of our book. We are not infal- lible, and so no doubt are guilty of having made some mistakes or possibly some omissions. We should like to acknowledge the advice and help Miss Farmer has given our art staff, and that Miss Fox' has given our typists. We thank Miss Slayton for the historical information given in the foreword of the book. If in the years to come, the pages of this volume recall happy memories of old friendships, if you pause to hear the echo of our high school years and pay it the tribute of a smile or a sigh, we shall have attained our goal in presenting this edition of the Saghdaquadah Siren. 34 FERN B.
