Busy planning the layout of a page in KEYNOTE, Audrey Bjunes, Editor-in-chief (seated right) discusses the possible layout with her editors: (seated from left to right) Vivian Cody, news editor; Diane Edlund, features editor; (standing) Carole Pattison, classes edit- or; Sharon Nelson, calendar editor; and Carolyn Bigelow, Editor. Under the watchful eye of Business Manager Bill East- man, KEYNOTE ' S advertising staff plans ad layouts for the next issue of the paper. Advertising manager, Ruth McPhail, left, helps Bill explain what advertisers are expecting from your school newspaper to ad solicit- ors Pat Hill and Mary Gagnon. Always Working to Beat the Deadlines One of the busiest sections of Sault High is undoubtedly room 119, the KEYNOTE office. This small room contains four typewriters, which were constantly clacking, to prepare copy for fourteen issues of KEYNOTE published during the 1959-1960 school year. In addition to the time spent on newspaper editing, the staff sponsored a skating party, traveled to press conferences in Ann Arbor and Charlevoix, and held their annual awards ban- quet, during which staffers were rewarded for all their hairpulling hours. Three news services — Columbia Press As- sociation, National Scholastic Press Association, and Quill and Scroll — awarded KEYNOTE a first place rating, signifying A-l quality. Night shift, one of KEYNOTE ' S most popular activities, finds staffers folding and inserting pages. Left to right: Jeannie Seppala, Gary Freedman, Vivian Cody, Jean Hoornstra, Pat Hill, Bruce Hoornstra, Betty Mattson, and Mary Ruth Hoornstra. 20
