Ludwig And Sherman Were Top Scorers The 1959 Blue Devils started their football conference games with three straight wins, easily knocking over Negaunee, Stevenson, and Glad- stone. However, in their next two battles they fell hard when Traverse City (not in conference) and Escanaba both handed them hard-driven shutouts. Under coaches Ludwig and Dubow, co-cap- tains Ken VanLuven and Carl Lackey led the Blue Devils to a glorious homecoming as they toppled the Ishpeming Hematites, 13-6. Defeat followed victory when the Devils journeyed to Marquette; the Redmen trounced them, 47-6. Although our Blue Devils missed top honors, they still outscored their opponents 86-73. High scorer of the season was Tom Ludwig, a junior, whose tally whas 36. Pete Donnelly and Jerry O ' Jibway tied for second place with totals of 12 points each. A a a rH BEE TEAM FOOTBALL. For Varsity And Bees According to Coach Ernest Kranz, our football Bees did a good job and gained a large amount of potential for the next two years ' Varsity teams. They started practice early this year — August 26 — and opened their five-game season on September 19. High scorer of the season was Tom Sherman, with 31 points. Rotary ' s main idea in inviting four senior boys each month during the school year to attend their meetings is to give the boys a chance to learn how a service club works. Colonnade ' s aim is to create, maintain, and extend through- out the school and community high standards of young womanhood. Last year the club adopted a Greek child, and is continuing its support. Colonnade also raises money for UNICEF, sells refreshments at games, decorates the bulletin board, and does many other services for school and community. THE PURPOSE OF HI-Y is to create, main- tain, and extend throughout the school and community high standards of Christian char- acter. The Hi-Y platform is clean speech, clean sports, clean scholarship, and clean living. COLONNADE. Bottom Row — R. Velde, A. Paquin, N. MacMillan, D. Tinkis, M. Batdorff, S. Feldman, J. Holm- strom, B. Speech Club Emphasizes Dramatics EACH YEAR SPEECH CLUB AND NA- TIONAL THESPIANS TROUPE 141 work to- gether to provide much enjoyment for Sault High students. The first project of the year was the annual Homecoming celebration, October 8 and 9. The snake dance and bonfire took place on Thursday night, and the parade, crowning of the queen, game, and dance were held on Fri- day. Soon after Homecoming, try-outs were held for the annual fall play. This year the play, NINE GIRLS by Wilfrid H. Pettitt, was a murder mystery which took place in a sorority clubhouse in the mountains of California. On December 14 initiation for National Thes- pians was held at the Ojibway Hotel. The ini- tiates had each won at least twenty points by working on Speech Club projects. SPEECH CLUB. Front Row— H. Lutz, A. Aldrich, S. Nobliski, D. Hakola, L. Caple, C. Mannisto, B. Ruona, G. STUDENT COUNCIL In addition to being the student governing body, each year the Sault High Student Council sends one junior abroad under the American Field Service exchange student program. In order to raise the money needed for the project they sponsor a carnival in the spring. Managing the student elections, preparing the social calendar, and taking care of the printing and distributing of student theater tickets all helped to provide the council with a full agenda at every meeting of the year. President Mike Cowen accepted his office with pleasure. Our exchange students, Herman Ko- petz and Bob Jacobs, were accepted as honorary members. 14 STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS. A necktie micro- phone, which enables a speaker to move and still be clearly heard, was also presented to the school by the club. Another major ac- tivity this year was acting as hostess club at the Upper Peninsula Future Nurses ' rally. FUTURE FARMERS OF AMERICA do their part to make our games just a little bit more fun by selling the popcorn that has made them famous. FUTURE TEACHERS OF AMERICA can be proud of the many worthwhile activities they take a vital part in during the year. These proj- ects enable them to be of valuable service to others; meanwhile they observe various phases of the teaching field. FUTURE HOMEMAKERS OF AMERICA never had a dull moment. They heard talks by various townspeople on giftwrapping and cen- terpices, then put their creative ability to work. The girls also discussed Japanese homes, styles, and sponsored a family dinner. Under the watchful eye of Business Manager Bill East- man, KEYNOTE ' S advertising staff plans ad layouts for the next issue of the paper. Advertising manager, Ruth McPhail, left, helps Bill explain what advertisers are expecting from your school newspaper to ad solicit- ors Pat Hill and Mary Gagnon. Always Working to Beat the Deadlines One of the busiest sections of Sault High is undoubtedly room 119, the KEYNOTE office. This small room contains four typewriters, which were constantly clacking, to prepare copy for fourteen issues of KEYNOTE published during the 1959-1960 school year. In addition to the time spent on newspaper editing, the staff sponsored a skating party, traveled to press conferences in Ann Arbor and Charlevoix, and held their annual awards ban- quet, during which staffers were rewarded for all their hairpulling hours. Three news services — Columbia Press As- sociation, National Scholastic Press Association, and Quill and Scroll — awarded KEYNOTE a first place rating, signifying A-l quality. Night shift, one of KEYNOTE ' S most popular activities, finds staffers folding and inserting pages. Whose hours of hard work and endless energy make an undef eatable combination? Yes, it ' s the honor-deserving cheerlead- ers being described.
