By processing their own films and prints, Northern Light saved money as well as the inconvenience of having the work done commercially. These savings are passed on to the stu- dent through the use of a greater variety of pictures. Photog- raphers for this year were Dick Heselton , Roger LaMothe, and Fred Heselton. Chuck Sudranski served as business man- ager, and Mr. Robert Bishop acted ds advisor of the depart- ment. u ffl 1. Q Chemicals are iuggled by Fred Hesel- ton, who hopes to avoid getting soaked on this one. Word of Appreciation: As advisor to the Northern Light for this year, l must give credit to the students on this page for possessing qualities which are apparently becoming increasingly rare. I refer to the capa- city to take on a iob, complete it in spite of difficulties, and still strive for quality in their efforts. Success in life is based on such simple qualities of character. Hats OH to Richmond, Roger, Fred, and Charles. Robert E. Bishop A Are eyes closed with grief or prayer? Dick Heselton, photography editor, in- spects a roll of newly developed film. The photography department wishes to thank Mr. Bruce, the faculty, and the students for their cooperation in the taking of pictures for this year- book. Without the help received it would have been very difticult, if not impossible, to complete this record of Sault High. Roger LaMothe examines a print in the enlarger. Close inspection will re- veal that the print is of Sault High. Chuck Sudranski takes inventory, to determine whether the laws of supply and demand have caught up with de- partment. ONCE INSIDE, THE BEST EDUCATION IN THE WORLD WILL NOT KEEP YOU THERE UNLESS YOU KNOW HOW TO USE IT SKILLFULLY. AT THIS POINT YOU WILL MEET OTHERS WHO HAVE ARRIVED BY OTHER MEANS. THE ONLY DIFFERENCE BETWEEN YOU AND THEM WILL BE THAT YOU ARE READY TO MOVE ON THROUGH ANOTHER DOOR WHILE THEY ARE JUST IN TRAINING. Hugh H. Holloway SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS SAULT STE. Editor Audrey Biunes gets her stat? around the copy table in the newsroom to correct errors in stories for Keynote. Left to right around the table are, Vivian Cody, Lillian Izzard, Jean Hornstra, Marcia Atkins, Kay Ferris, Carole Pattison, Audrey Biunes, and K Patrick Cleary. Although entirely staffed by underclassmen, Keynote during this year continued to collect top awards in competition with other school newspapers throughout the nation. Both National Scholastic Press Association and Columbia Scholastic Press Association gave the nod of approval to the results of the staff activities. In addition to this, Billy Eastman, Business Manager of the newspaper, received honorable mention in a national advertising contest with school newspapers throughout the United States regardless of size of the school. Audrey Biunes as Managing Editor ably headed this year's Editorial Board which included Billy Eastman, Business Manager, as well as Associate Editors Marion Batdorfi and Carolyn Bigelow. Staffers learned the meaning of punctuality and accuracy as well as acquired the ability to organize and present the written word effectively and efficiently. These skills will serve them well in college or in later iobs whether or not in a newspaper. RICHMOND HESELTON CATHY HOWE CHARLES ROLLO Z. g M . OUR SCHOLASTIC VARSITY Merit scholarships are available to seniors in secondary schools across the country. Awards are made on the competitive basis of the student's ability to succeed in college, measured by his scores on two nationwide tests. Finalists who do receive awards from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation or cooperating corporations may elect to attend any accredited institution and pursue any course of study leading to a usual baccalaureate degree. Stipends paid to the scholar vary from S100 a year to 51500 a year, although they have previously reached a maximum of S2200 a year. Not all finalists in the competition can receive scholarships, but the fact that a student was a finalist may influence the college of his choice to grant a scholarship. Last year there were some 430,000 students in the United States who took the qualifying tests. Of this number there were only 10,000 finalists who took the advanced battery of tests this year. Sault High School was indeed honored to have the three pictured here in the finalists group. Hats off to Cathy Howe, Charles Rollo, and Richmond Heselton. Zleaiwm ywwwmg? After meeting defeat with Newberry, they played a tie game with the strong Collegiate eleven. Marquette tell to our Blue Devils in a 20-0 score. At this point, the lack of experienced lettermen began to take its toll, and the Blue Devils lost the three remaining games to powerful squads from Manistique, Menominee, and Petoskey. The first year under head-coach Dubow the squad showed great spirit in compiling their 3-4-1 record. Coach Dubow had only three returning lettermen as a nucleus tor his 1958 version of the Blue Devils. Both coaches and the team deserve much credit for their eftorts in the last season. This year's team wrapped up the first undefeated conference season for the school since 1944 and the best record in the school's history consisting of twenty victories and only two defeats. For the first time in the history of the school, the Blue Devils traveled down-state to participate in the quarter-finals, and semi-finals of the state tournament. The twelve man squad consisted of nine seniors, two iuniors, and one sophomore. Jim Ludwig and Tom Talsma were the team's two biggest men. Jim's constant pile up of points and rebounds helped the Devils break their season, conference, and one game scoring records. Jim sunk over 1,000 points during his four-year varsity career. Jim also was selected to the Detroit Times Class B All-State basketball squad. He gained the ultimate in honors by being selected to the Dream team of the State of Michigan which was made up of the best five players in the State. Tom Talsma, another of Sault High's all time greats surpassed his 500 point mark and has been the other half of the great Ludwig-Talsma combo. Tom was named to the fourth team in Class B for All- State honors. This team did a remarkable iob both defensively and offensively to produce their 1958-1959 record. The 1959-ers will long be remembered in Sault High for the team they have pro- duced, and Soo High will always remain tremendously proud of every team member. , , Sault Negaunee Sault Manistique Sault Mcmistique Sault Marquette . This they have done aptly, and so to all of these students we dedicate this book. ..-,Q v if Ass Q of Wu 'W' 4 . -.vi X . lit mx ri' .- , Ove Lundgren Urs Wiggily Sweden Switzerland in 'T :Wg 5 N-r 5 if. : ' A' 5 A A A it ' fr If f V D Juana Liimatfa Francoise Mullaval Mary Lou Mcrqyillo Finland France philippines Margaret Kniskern i5C'f1Cl: G.A.A., Speech Club, Voca- tional Co-op Robert Kucharczyh Intra-mural Sports, Rifle Club, Track George Kolovos Basketball, Cee, Football, Bee, Junior Rotarians, Rifle Club, Senior Class Student Council Representative, Stu- dent Council, President, Track Thomas Lackey Baseball, Cross Country, Homeroom President, Vice President, Junior Ro- tarians, Varsity Club William Krieger Boys' Glee Club, Choir, Football, Bee, Forensics, Golf, Hi-Y, Intra-mural Sports, Junior Rotarians, Keynote, Homeroom President, Vice President, National Thespians, Pep Club, Sgt.- at-Arms, Speech Club, President, Plays, Desperate Hours, Onions in the Stew, Home Sweet Homicide, Nuts in May , Sophomore Student Council Representative, Student Council, Track Paul Larke Band, Boys' Glee Club, Hi-Y, Junior Rotarians, Orchestra l Betty Lawrence Rgberf Leflm Wanda Leigh Civil Air Patrolg Choirg Homeroom Sec- Immhmurcl Sports Future Nursesp Vocational Co-op retaryp Library Clubg Vocational Co-op Marjaana Liimatta Clarence Lougheecl James l-UdWl9 Colonnadeg Foreign Exchange Studentp Future Teachersg G.A.A.p Speech Clubg CYOSS COUHYFY: Intro-mural 5P0 l5 Vorslly Club: Foolbcll' Bee' VG'5llYf Choir, Student Council Basketball, Varsityg Baseball, Junior Rotariansg Homeroom President, Vice President , , -r ,fr 2 Joseph Lundy Rifle Club, President, Pe Country Gerald Maki Football, Varsity, Bee William Lynn P ClUb: Cross Football, Bee Student Manager, Stu- dent Council, Homeroom Secretary, Treasurer, intra-mural Sports Jacquelynne Maki Aqua Cadets, Vice President, Sgt.-at- Arms, Colonnade, Future Nurses, G.A.A., President, Secretary, Treasurer, Keynote, Northern Light, Speech Club, Pep Club, President, Choir, Treasurer, Student Council, Lite Saving, Senior Class Treasurer, Homecoming Princess TFA Judy MacLeod Civil Air Patrol, Forensics, Future Nurses, Junior Red Cross Council, Speech Club, Choir, Vocational Co-op, Tempora Latina David Markham Baseball, Track, Vocational Co-op, ln- tra-mural Sports, Lifesaving 41 Louann Martin Terry Materna Future Nurses, Band, Maiorettes, Drum National The5Pl0n5i Speech CIUPI S97-' Majorette, Lifesaving, Homeroom Sec- c A m5' 'Nuts in MUYHI H0mef00 ' retary Vice President, Treasurer, Band, Or- Marilyn Mawhinney Colonnade, Vice President, Keynote, Speech Club, Student Council, Home room President, Sophomore Class Sec retary ,A W ssl Pl' LW. fig., .
