I can- not recall another year in which the total results of our program could measure up to those now fresh in your memories. These hard- earned and well-deserved goals could not have been reached with- out the power and leadership of our seniors. Your teachers have con- fidence that your triumphs will not halt at graduation. We look upon you as young, but competent, 'bridge builders'. x X J .areal Ioalcb ,QLIAP spec-lQeuer CAMLJ mifm gJU!afJ gajtnian ADAMS, SUSAN Atom Crackers, Bowling, Choir, Keynote, Lifesaving, National Thespians, Speech Club, Plays: War of the Worlds , Green ValIey , Tempora Latina, Vocational Co-op. Student Council, the governing body of Sault High, has been active this year not only in affairs of the school and city, but has expanded its program to cover foreign soil. Managing the political assembly and student elections was one of many items on the agenda. Throughout the year council prepared the social calendar for the school year, provided for the printing and distribution of theater tickets, sponsored a carnival for the exchange student fund, and co- operated with the faculty in making needed adjust- ments in and around the school. I. if 1 , Clffabc Linda White hardly needs an introduction. She is known by almost everyone in Sault High. Last year, Linda was chosen from four iunior girls to represent Sault High in Finland. Upon her arrival in Finland, Linda was met by her new Finnish family , Mr. and Mrs. Erkki Aroheimo and daughter Liisa. They took her to their home, which was also to be home to Linda, in Mantsala. She spent her summer biking, swimming, and meeting Finnish teenagers. Then, all too soon, the summer had ended and Linda was on her way back to America. She arrived safe and sound in Sault Ste. Marie, and began to readiust to American ways. Back in school, Linda was asked by Student Council to speak to the student body on her trip. Her speech was very interesting and full of emotion, and tears were seen glistening in many eyes when she sat down. Linda has taught us much from her own experiences about other people and their way of thinking. 51 This is Urs Wiggli. You may have seen him walking through the halls of Sault High or wandering about photo- graphing picturesque scenes here in the Sault and at out of town games or trips. Some of the underclassmen may have wondered, Who is he? and Where does he come from? Student Council, which sponsored Urs, informs us that he is an exchange student to Sault High from Switzerland. He traveled across the Atlantic aboard the Arosa Kulm with seven hundred other European exchange students. Urs has done a fine iob keeping up with the fast pace set by Sault High students, considering the great difference between European and American schools. He has par- ticipated in such extra-curricular activities as Hi-Y, Or- chestra, Keynote, and Student Council. He was also noticed working behind the scenes on the Speech Club play. Urs has made his home in the Sault with Mom and Dad Leighton Eseltine and brother Aaron. We have all enioyed Urs' visit, and certainly hope he has enioyed it as much. . The Keynote was being passed out by the enthusiastic students who had helped put the issue together. During the year the Keynote office was known for its lack of space, usable typewriters, glue, and for its scissors chained to the desk . . . in general, a messy appearance. A typical Keynote hour found advisor John F. MacDonald shouting Get that story in! while the big brass of the Editorial Board were seen working as hard as the cub reporters. Their efforts were well spent. The bi-weekly paper kept Sault High well informed on everything from fashions to sports. Good luck to next year's staff. May they carry on the A-1 tradition of Keynote. The Sault High Band is ever expanding its broad horizons. After tooting their way through a rushed football workout, members of the blue and gold shot into a fast-moving basketball season. Director Joseph Deike then led the group into its successful concert session, this year featuring a novel all-band concert. Civic duties were not forgotten when the ever-ready players came out in full force to greet the first boat of the 1957 shipping season and to delight spectators in parade performances. The mus- icians next spread their busy schedule to include neighboring bands. This was seen in the recent band day at Pullar Stadium. The band, strengthened this year by an unusually large number of talented seniors, began to reap the harvest of the work it had sown. A highly commendable first division rating at the district band festival prompted a drive which resulted in funds to send the band members to the state festival in Ann Arbor. Who knows what new horizons will be discovered as they travel ON TO ANN ARBOR! L.: But men were found who believed in the proiect, men of inspired faith and heroic determination. Public spirited citizens, engineers, bankers, con- tractors, united their talents and strength to make the proiect a reality. They overcame all odds, all obstacles and difficulties. The financing was success- fully accomplished. All of the engineering and con- struction problems were successfully, economically and safely solved. Under the inspiring leadership of the Mackinac Bridge Authority, headed by Senator Prentiss M. Brown, no effort has been spared to make the Mackinac Bridge the finest, safest and most beautiful bridge the world has ever seen. Because a beautiful bridge is a poem, I have summarized the story of the Mackinac Bridge in these lines: Generations dreamed the crossing, Doubters shook their heads in scorn, Brave men vowed that they would build it, From their faith a bridge was born. There it spans the miles 'of water, Speeding millions cn their way - Bridge of vision, hope and courage, Portal to a brighter day. 2 S7 zz ' L g55Q,,f1 ' L1fffSX'Efg 'J '-x x xANAul 'V'-fll'tf'l A 4 AA --ri ,vb 4 I X-.ws .. Esson, The 1956 Blue Devils, with an all out team effort, produced what was probably the greatest team ever to play for Sault High. This year's team wrapped up the first undefeated-untied season for the school since 1930 and the best record in the school's history consisting of nine victories and no defeats. The tremendous team effort of the Blue Devils rated them the unanimous choice as the No. 1 grid team in the U.P. and brought home the coveted Barber Trophy, symbolic of U.P. football supremacy. But this was just the beginning. Realizing the superiority of the Blue and White and the terrific potential they possessed. The Detroit Times and Detroit Free Press rated Sault High as all state Class B Champions. No finer honor could come to the team. The Blue Devils outscored their opponents by the lopsided total of 287-51 and out-gained them by over 1200 yards gaining 2680 yards while holding the opposition to 1415. 68 T. John Fletcher brought home the U.P. scoring crown with 98 points and was placed on the All U.P. 2nd team. Jerry Montero who was also a Co-Captain, landed a berth on the All U.P. Catholic team. While the team was on the low end of a one win-three loss record, the boys gained a great deal of experience and knowledge on the field. The grid team shows a great deal of promise for future football potential. After losing their first two games to Newberry, the Bee's traveled down state to beat Cheboy- gan. The season ended with a loss to J. D. Pierce of Marquette. A, Faced with a tremendous rebuilding iob, Coach Ernie Kranz worked long and hard with the team. The boys, who had trouble getting together for workout as a team, worked the hills and dales around Sault Teach and developed into fine cindermen. The schedule was sparse with several dual meets with Pickford and the U.P. finals at Escanaba. Seniors on the team were Don MacArther and Ralph Gillhooley. CLASS B CHAMPIONS The traditionally strong Sault High track and field team seems sure to have another fine season. While the team has only two seniors on the squad, there is a very strong delegation of iunior boys. This year's cindermen have a well rounded squad in both running and field events. Under the tireless coaching of Ernie Kranz, Barry Armstrong has developed into one of the best shot putters in the school's history. John Fletcher adds to the strength of the team with his potential in the 440 yd. dash, high lump, and relays. Bill Cooper is one of the biggest sparks of the '57 track team with his abilities in the pole vault, 440 yd. dash, high, and relays. With such fine athletes the team is assured of another very successful season, and hope to retain their title as UP Class B champions. The only seniors on the team are Chuck Whitmore, a veteran half-miler, and John Fletcher. 76 Gd! Sault High students on the Country Club golf course are working hard to produce a real successful squad. The team is centered around Phil Fleming, the only senior on the squad, Gary Panks, John Belleau, and Fred Clausen, all juniors. Sault High tied their first meet with Petoskey, down state, but hope to defeat them on home grounds. Other meets scheduled are at Alpena, the UP finals at Escanaba, and possible a home and home series with Collegiate, of Sault, Ont. .7 Spwzto, Home room competition, or intramural sports as they are called, proved to be very interesting, highly competitive, and quite successful. With many boys taking part, the program was closely followed by many students. Under the supervision of Merv Beedle, a representative from each home room drew up basketball, volleyball, and softball schedules. All games were played at noon hours. Home room 27 proved to be the top five in the basketball loop while volleyball and softball are still in progress. An added attraction in the volleyball circuit was the entrance of a team by the faculty, which is still undefeated. 77 This giant step across the water brings to an end an era of the ferries and the anticipation of a bridge. The seniors, too, have ended the planning for graduation. As the bridge brings a new era of travel for many, the seniors embark upon the new area of study, work and learning. yo5e,9A .jcrgy pa friclf price yamea Em ice June Huff Sue .Anile l 65 .Harry oljounch mane Weir pogerf lmafmgorg pafricia pun' 67Aza4efA .7re5fraif fdnna me Eval? - 1.- mi' x N, ..
