The NY'ildcats hit the Devils in an on night and carried home .1 52-19 setback. The following Friday the high-flying varsity men traveled to New- berry to scalp the fighting Indians, 45-23. I-I0s't to Ishpeming the next night, the BIue and White sent the Hematites home with a 37-19 defeat. The Blue Devil steamroller hit an all-time high at Mun- ising on January 21 as they crushed the Purple and White, 68--13. Meeting the acid test at home on January 28 when the Escanaba Eskymos, later to become UP. Champs, invaded the Lock City. the local quintet broke the Esky jinx before a record crowd by doubhng the score, 52-25. Faced by the tough Negaunee Miners the following evening, the Sault five again conquered 145-355 the squad that later defeated them in the district tourna- EAARL ament, In this game the subs were used for much of the tilt. Two men, Lever and Pevarnic, played their last game before entering the armed forces. XVith a nine game winning streak, and now one of the most respected teams in ' ff the U.P., the Ripleymen traveled to Nlanistique on February 4 to wallop again the Fmeralds, 30-21. After visiting Ishpeming on Ifebruary Il for .1 one day stay and .1 38-24 victory, the Blue and W'hite squad returned home for Ll final three game stand with Newberry, Nlunising. and Marquette. La- Joiee. Alrick, .ind Gerrish warmed the nets to send NIURPH the Indians home with a 45-17 defeat, while on Mothers' Night, February 25, the Devils re-walloped the Algers from Munising, 68-14. As Ll climax to their unde- feated season, the varsity took the Redmen, 52-35. Soon many of these hoys will be in Uncle Samls armed services: then watch Ollf. Axis, for this gang fights-and wins. Another reason for the Backing this victory team are the coaches Clower leftj: head coach David Ripley and assistant var- sity and B coach Lansford Collins: the cheerleaders flower rightj: Barbara Johnston, Thelma XYZ-lch, Claire Lamontagne, and Audrey NVhite. Missing from the HV are Shirley I,ever and Tony Pevnrnic, already in the service. Of these players three will be returning: Ifarl CAPT. Riordan, junior, and Chick Cerrish and Clark Murphy, sophomores. Despite the few RED returning lettermen, Coach Ripley says of the future: XVe will have, in the next two years, teams as good as this year's teamn. .-Xfter completing the most suc- cessful hardcourt season of any S,ll.S. squad, the Blue Devils lost in an upset game to Negaunee in the district tournament finals.
