The target for one winter night was the Bondbardment Concert at which the band and choir raised 545,000 in bond pledges. XWC could never have hit this bull's eye without Chief Thomas as navigator. He could be heard in every part of the hanger plotting tl1e course to victory. They also played .1 one night stand at the junior Red Cross Carnival. Last spring Chief Thomas donned his flying suit and zoomed down to St. Louis, Missouri for the National Music Educators' Conference. One of the themes was the idea that music should be for everyone. The more students participating in a musical organization, the better that organization will be. This has long been Chief's philosophy as is shown by the size of the band and the chorus. The team piled up an impressive record in first downs, yards gained, and total points, as they defeated rthe Col- legiate Institute team from Sault, Canada, Ishpeming, Manistique, Munising, Marquette, and Newberry. The two losses were suffered at the hands of the Escanaba Eskymos and the Menominee Maroons. In past years the varsity usually had a pre-season game with DeTourg but this year, since the Red Raiders had dropped football for the duration, a game was scheduled with Collegiate Institute. The big Collegiates held the Sault at bay most of the afternoon, but late in the 3rd quarter, after a series of passes down the field, the ball was carried over from 6 yard marker for the Devils' lone touchdown. Host to Escanaba the following week, the fighting varsity played hard, but due to some good quarterback- ing and passing, the Eskymos easily downed the Sault, 26-0. Red Waters, co-captain and star halfback, led the team to victory at Ishpeming as he scored two touch- downs, one on a 102 yard run, and we walloped the Hema- tites, 26-7. Weak, due to the loss of Waters, who had suffered a broken collar bone in scrimmage, the Blue Devils could not stop the Menominee Maroons' passing attack as we slipped into defeat by the score of 32-13. After experimenting with several different combina- tions, Coach Ripley hit a winning combination that took Munising to the score of 19-0. The Marquette Redmen proved tough customers as they almost scalped the Blue Devils. We won with a thrilling 7-6 victory. Ross Annatoyn scored the winning marker by dashing 40 yards after taking a pass from Jim Mclnnes. Continuing their streak, the team hit their stride in the best of the year as they defeated Manistique, 27--6. Completing a successful season, the varsity conquered the fighting Newberry Indians, 25--12. page fu rnfy -lu ll fGhe qzghtzng qiees Although gomg vnctory less durmg the year of 43 the B team football squad came through wrth several no table feats Under Coach Ben Tamblyns gurdmg hand the bovs mastered the fundamentals and besldes furnxsh mg 1 steady stream of men to the injury ndden varsxty drd the almost rmpossxble by scormg on the mxghty Col legnate Instxtute team of Sault Ontano Because the usual St Ignaee and DeTour games were cmceled due to transportatlon dnffncultres the gumor grnd ders had only three regular games all wrth Colleglate besndes two mter squad games It was m the first meetmg of Bllek and Gold wnth the Blue and Whxte that the reserve squad scored the first touchdown on the Wnldcats m sm years Wxthm fiye mmutes of the opening gun after Brll esse ames made a mce return followed by a reverse by Herb Mxchaels a long set up pass from McKerroll to H111 plus ames short pass to Stephenson the Bees scored The rest of the after noon the small reserve squad led by ames smart quarter backnng kept the much larger Cannucks at bay but Col leglates power was too much as they pushed over four two meetmgs of the squads the Canadnan powerhouse rolled up scores of 35 0 and 42 0 These games were played after the varsity hud made a drun of some of the reseryes best materral Among the men taken from Tlmblyns telm for var snty play were blg Bun Wylle drmmutrve Sam Stephen son fullback Bob MeKerroll tackle end lm H111 eenter Nlels Baver and star varsxty guard Norman Butsch Guards ohn Morley and George Barr center Ted shred ends N lfgll Lajorce and Herb MlChJLlS backs esse ames and 1m Trnm all turned rn sterlnng performanees for the boys who played 1 full year on the B team The record of the reserves along wnth the large number of returmng varsxty lettermen gxyes hope for a top team next season CZ0Dmners o the Gourt For the thxrd txme 1n four years and the second m succession the B team basketeers took the Lnttle Erght conference trtle Coach Langsford Colhns boys were txed for frnal plaee ln the Llttle Erghr eonferenee with season s record of mne wnns and two losses The two defe1ts were at the hands of Brrmley who tred the Sault for flnal place and Rudyard the team the Bees defeated 41 13 to wm the Evenmg News Trophv as champs of Chxppewa Vfackmac countres Durmg the course of the season and the tourney the future varsity eonquered Brnmley Cedarvrlle Hulbert Prckford DeTour and Newberry B The team had fiye players brought up to the yarsnty near the end of the year to gxye these boys expenence These frve Butsch Bruce Doherty Makr and Splan along wxth the thre returmng lettermcn wrll probably form the nucleus of the yarsnty of 44 45 Others reeexymg B basketball letters were Cooper Mc Adams Annatoyn Leym and LaPo1nte To make up for the lack of freshmen on the squad Cooper bemg the lone one 1 frosh C squad was formed coached by Ed Hon kanen thxs squad was comprnsed of Martyn Crawford Honkanen and Wfoodard The Cs partlclpated m the Lrttle hrght tournament for reserye teams qlzers o the Czgrack Wxth only four returmng veterans the Sault Hxgh traek squad under the gundlng hands of eoaches Frredl Tamblyn and Trudgeon made a eredxtable record thx year by wmmng the regnonal meet and placlng thlrd rn the UP flnals The ennder path boys took fiye frrst places mne sec onds md hye thrrds eompletely outclassmg the other three class B teams for the regronal trtle The Saults t tal of 55 3 pomts was double that of the closest mal and was more than the total pomts of the other teams ln the meet Conllnlml on page 33 page twenty three L? Girls in the clothing and home economics classes of Miss Frances Zimmerman, Miss Blodwen johns, Mrs. Doris Remy, and Mrs. Harold Embs have made bed jackets, utility bags, bedside table covers, layettes, wash cloths, bed- room slippers, and housewives. Shop classes under the direction of Mr. Langsford Collins have fashioned table and floor lamps, lapboards, writing boards, and racks for coat hangers. Miss Myrtle Sanders' art students have assisted by making greeting cards. menu covers, and nut cups, and they have painted the covers of forty writing portfolios. They also made several large posters to advertise the spring carnival. ln addition to the work carried on as class projects, much has been accomplished by groups of junior Red Cross members who have met in the workshop in room 6 dur- ing sixth hours and Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Here. under the direction of Miss Gladys XVold, county chairmang Miss Thelma Collins, high school sponsor, and Miss Hazel Blair, supervisor of knitting and crocheting, students have completed knitted and pieced afghans, many pairs of bedroom slippers, table decorations, nut cups, tray covers, and other holiday articles, writing portfolios, bridge pads, canes, puzzles, and games. Other projects on the year's program have included the packing and shipping of gift boxes to children in war areas, and the preparation of special Christmas boxes for Fort Brady, the Emma Nason Home, and the American Legion Children's Billet, Otter Lake, Michigan. In order to Hnance its program of production, en- rollment, and aid for the National Children's Fund, the junior Red Cross sponsored a tag day, an enrollment drive, and a spring carnival. The attainment of necessary funds for the year's activities was made possible in part by gifts from several high school organizations including the following: PETE L EELS 9 page thirty the unior qfed Gross Hour. Its officers are president, Anne W'eIshg vice president, jim I.aPointeg secretary, Vera NIcDoxveIIg and treasurer, Frieda Pesenski. This year a local city council has also helped to direct and unite the efforts of all the junior Red Cross members of the parochial and public schools of the Sault. Dick Hol- Iev, Sault High senior, has served as president of this group. Miss Ruth Iiradish has been the adviser. Many faculty members have contributed their time and energy by assisting the junior workers in conducting their program of activities for the year. Grateful letters received from men in the army and navy hospitals, from recipients of the gift boxes, and from children who have been aided by the National Chi!- dren's Fund, bring to the junior Red Cross workers ample proof their efforts have been worthwhile.
