Entl1usiasm-- Yes! The Swing Bandu is a new addition to the music department. Created for the purpose of hav- ing something novel, Mr. Thomas believed it would be fun for mixers and assemblies. General favorites in musical selections were voted upon and ordered. During the year the swingsters played at basket- ball games, Boy Scout Banquet and Banquet of Champions. Also they journeyed with the band an-.I choir to Canada for a performance. Members of the group are: Dexter Varino, stu- dent director, Paul Ford, Robert Johnson, Raffaele The high school ensemble has made several ap- pearances at teas, civic functions, banquets, school and Little Theatre plays and at various places this year. Composed of wind and string instruments the group plays when a larger musical organization is inconvenient. At the beginning of the year the group was known as the high school Octet but the name was changed to ensemble during the year. Practices were after school. The musicians did not charge for their services. Included in the Ensemble were Dexter Varino, W'alt Boldig, Mary Jane Wallace, Elizabeth Strike, Jean Tuxworth, George Blackburn, Raffaele Car- accio, and Mr. Thomas. Carraccio, Elizabeth Strike, Ralph McCormick, Benedict Behling, Kathleen Beacom, Paul Levin, john Paivinen, Walter Boldig, Louis Maara, Daisy- belle Coons, and Shirley Traverse. Performing throughout the football and basket- ball seasons, at the district tournament and in Canada the twirlers did a splendid job according to Earl Thomas music director who is also in charge of the twirlers. Through different sales which they sponsored the members of the group were able to purchase new uniforms and batons. Sault Higlfs pep reached a new peak this year with reorganization of the pep group. Under the watchful eye of Miss Fyfe, the new adviser, stu- dents werc tried out and four girls were selected to join the ranks of cheerleading. With their clever assemblies and the introduction of new and peppy cheers they were one of the main factors in cheer- ing the 1940-'41 Blue Devils to victory. This year's pep honor and cheerleading letter goes to Jane Mac- Lachlan. Jane has done outstanding work in this field. The other cheerleaders are Rollo Calder, Henry Bliss, Inez Klein, all veterans from last year, and apprentices Claire Lamontagne, Lillian Innes, Eliza- beth Gibson, and Gwen Samuels. Fifteen for the cheerleaders! Page nine

The Game's The Thing. Although they started the season with only four lettermen, the Blue Devils' football record for the season was the best since 1932, losing only one game. Hopes for an undefeated season were shattered October 12 when the fighting Sault Blue Devils, lost to the Fskymos at Escanaba. Each high school in the Upper Peninsula was asked to dedicate one game as Knute Rockne Memorial Game, so the final game was set aside for that purpose. On this clay, Sault High emerged from the battlefield victorious over Alpena. Fore Teamwork and cooperation showed themselves a necessity to organizations in school as well as to a country as a whole. Through these qualities the golf team, coached by Mr. Benjamen Tamblyn, took first place in the invitational meet at Mackinaw City. Only one veteran returned to the team, Paul St. Pierre who took top scoring honors in the meet. Along with Paul Bill Barber, Ted McKinney and Bob Mende worked together for the winning of the Feetham Cup. The second and last meet of the year was that at Marquette in which the Sault team entered. Page eleven Traclcsters Rate! Making for better physical health and enjoyment as well as to try for high honors, the track team has made a record which places among the top highest ever made in Sault High. The B track team places third in the Little Six Meet and the varsity squad took top ranking at Mar- quette. Among other activities the team expected to par- ticipate were the meet at Houghton and the Memorial Day Relays at Escanaba.
