CATCH THE SPIRIT lover designed by Cheryl Frommung Eagle Echo — 1 Z — Man At Z —104 Brad Zeman. When you hear that name what do you think of? Humorous situations, self confidence, weirdness, or like, a total rager man''? All of the above seem to describe Brad. Maybe that's what motivated him to try his hand at D.J.ing. On September 24, 1987,Brad Zeman, his girlfriend, Rachel Grunewald, Cheryl Frommung (yearbook member), and I traveled to the popular and much listen- ed to Z — 104 radio station in Madison. On this Thursday night. Brad was going to appear as a guest Z — jay, doing the High Five at 10:00, and be heard by all of southern Wisconsin. It all started when Rachel sent in a letter to Fletcher Keyes, the usual Thursday night D.J., and explained that Brad was the Z — man and he'd be perfect as a Z — jay. To Brad's total suprise and shock, (he totally flipped) Fletcher Keyes call- ed Brad and invited him to come and spin the records . Fletcher Keyes wasn't there that night, but Dave Anthony,(another D.J.) gave us the grand tour and helped Brad through the 15 minutes of air time. All in all, with the exception of some nerves. Brad did a superb job. It took a lot of guts to go on the air for a well — known radio station. I'm sure he'll remember it forever; I know I will. Good Job Brad, you made Sauk Prairie proud! Written by: Tanya Cutler Dave Anthony gives Brad Zeman a pep talk before he goes on the air as guest Z — jay. Dave Anthony shows Brad the equipment he'll be using. Brad psyches himself up before he begins the High — Five at Z — 104. 2 — Z-104 Feature Story The 1988 Eagle Echo is Dedicated to: DORANNA LUCEY Her service for the past 20 years have been greatly appreciated by all. Scott Pierce Principal Too often, we tend to spend so much of our lives in between time; a glimpse in the past, a glance to the future. Some may say that there are only two good places — where we have been and where we are going. We would like to think that somehow your years at Sauk Prairie High School will provide you a moment where, in a sense, time stood still, past and future. If we, the faculty and staff, and you, our graduates have touched each other, even slightly, then all our lives are ever so enriched by just having known each other. As you leave Sauk Prairie High School, try to remember the friendships you made and the tools you have received as you embark upon your future. On behalf of the entire faculty and staff of Sauk Prairie High School to our seniors we say thank you for what you have given us and best wishes for what you will give to our future. Candids — 39 PART-TIME JOBS Many of the students at Sauk Prairie high school have part-time jobs, and have them for a pretty good reason; money. Without jobs, we wouldn't have enough money tor things like: gas, car payments, food, dates, parties, and Future plans for college. These jobs vary Trom working at a rocery store to Hardees to Devil's Head, tudents usually earn $3.35 to $4.00 an hour, which usually is enough to get by on during a week, and still have some to save for college. Some students get their jobs through the business dept, at our school. There have been many students who eot their jobs this way and really enjoy tne work they are doing. There also those students who have other reasons for having a job. To get out of the house, and To get ex- perience for my future career, said some of the students when they were asked why they had a job. No matter what the reason, students at Sauk Prairie feel that part-time jobs are very important to have during their high school years, by Cneryl Frommung Rick Wenzel at Piggly Wiggly. The facility was a long time in waiting and very pleasantly welcomed. Finally the high school has a place of its own to hold sports events and special gatherings. The dedication of the facility was August 30, 1987 and it lasted about half an hour. The event, with High School prin- cipal, Mr. R. Scott Pierce as the Master of Ceremonies, opened with the High School Marching Band playing the Star Spangled Banner under the direction of Ms. Sue Halloway. The Pom Pon Squad, advised by Miss Cindy Duban, also performed. Other speakers who were a part of the program were: Dr. Richard Magnuson, the district superintendent; Mr. Larry Black, High School Assistant Principal; Mrs. Valerie McAuliffe, school board vice president and Mrs. Kathy Rozovics, school board president. Our facility is considered one of the best high school facilities in the state. We are very proud to have this great facility as part of our school. You're a Good Man Charlie Brown was last year's spring musical production. This was not the cartoon that everyone knows and loves but it was centered around the same characters. The musical was made up of skits within the show that portrayed a not-so-average day in the life of Charlie Brown and his friends. The production covered their championship baseball game, Lucy's love for Schroeder, Snoopy's suppertime, flying a kite, and much more. This was by far the most successful musical productions that our school has done in a long time. Peo- ple of all ages enjoyed the casts of Dave Lawrence as Charlie Brown, Melissa Koenig and Stacie Manning as Lucy, Erik Nidy and Corey Sprecher — Snoopy, Nathan Anderson and Brian Bannon — Schroeder, Amy Statz and Chris Kratzke as Patty, Dennis Wozniak and Clay Curran as Linus. AFS —100 MEXICO, JAPAN AND DENMARK, VISIT WISCONSIN. Hello friends!!! I am Mary Carmen Diaz, I come from Mexico. I live in Colima a city of 100,000 people. I am very glad to share my AFS year with you, it was exciting, because I had the opportunity to learn a lot of things from Sauk Prairie High School, such as new sports, how to use the locker system, nice methods of teaching and many other things. I really appreciate the excellent organizatin in this school. Between my city and this place there are some differences, like the weather, hoilidays and life style. I enjoyed everything with my family; so, I would like to thank the Bannan Family. Also thanks to everyone at this school: teachers, classmates, and in general to all the community who made this great experience possible. Hi! I'm Soren, one of this year's exchange students, and I come from a smaller town in Denmark. There are some differences between the U.S.A. and my country, especially the school system. We don't have the locker system, cheerleaders, the same classes, and the way of teaching is different too. However, it has been really fun and in- teresting to experience your way. Even if I don't get credits for this year, I still feel it's been the most beneficial year in my life so far. Everybody has been so incredible nice to me, and I would like to thank the teachers for being so helpful and nice, also the students for right away considering me one of them and for helping me out of any kind of problem. And thanks to Mr. Kadala and Mr. Conroy for welcoming me on the soccer and swimming teams. I hope all of you know how much fun this has been for me, and I know I will look back on this year as the most memorable in my life. Hello! My name is Ritsuko Masuoka. I'm from Kazo which is near Tokyo. My city is very small city, and the population is about 50,000. When I return to Japan, I will attend Freshman from high school. Japanese school has very tight school regulations; we have to wear uniforms, no make-up or perm, and we have to go to school six days a week. So when I went to Sauk Prairie High School on the first day, 1 was very surprised. School is free and students enjoy the school. I have had great experience here, especially American football and Homecoming. I've never seen such openhearted and joyful school events in Japan. I enjoyed, and I am pleased very much because of everybody's kindness to me; especially my host family (Schultz fami- ly), they helped me anytime. I thank all of you and I will miss you when I go back to Japan. Thanks! Ritsuko I hope you never forget me, because I'm sure I will remember you forever. Thanks again and ... HASTA LA VISTA EAGLES!!! It was definitely a building and learning year for both the girls and the coaches. There were only eighteen girls which was enough for one girl's varsity team. As it was, this large varsity team became very close. The girls worked together both on and off the field. The season started out with a hard knock from Mid- dleton, who has had their soccer program for six years. Throughout the rest of the season ; however, they came up against teams with less experience and managed to score goals during most of their games. They had a victory against Fort Atkinson, which was like winning the World's Cup in soccer. The girls had worked the whole season, with one win and seven losses. The girls enthusiam has carried into this school year, and I beleive they are ready to win more this year, Coach Hielke commented. Girls Soccer — 113 It's All In The Swing Coach Martin takes a time-out to discuss the strategy and defense of his team. This year's softball team was small, yet productive. Whether it be because of the spirit of the team or because of the new coach, Mr. Martin, it was a learn- ing season. As in every team sport, winning is nice but how you play the game; your personal im- provement; and the general camaraderie of the team is what is really important. Though not a lot of wins were with the Eagles, im- provement was made. The varsity team was made up of many veterans who were used to one style of coaching and having a new coach was an adjustment. However, typical of a Sauk Prairie Eagle, they played with grace, style, and ease. Pitcher, Angie Breunig fires a strike right into the catchers glove. Another highlight was that the team qualified its first swimmer in years to the state competition. Alicia Uselman, a sophomore, made it to state in the 50 yard freestyle. Ed Breunig led the team in hitting (.407), doubles (7), and RBI's (21). He was chosen first team all con- ference and MVP of the Sauk Prairie Invitational for his ef- forts. Paul Ran .enberger led the Eagles in runs (21), home runs (4) and was chosen MVP and captain by his teamates. He was a special mention all- conference pick at third base. Ted Frey was also special mention all Badger with a .371 B.A. and a sparkling 2.19 ERA to go with a 3-2 pitching record. Jeff Trudell was another special mention pick at shortstop. Trudy hit .333 and was selected to the all tournament team at the Reedsburg Invitaional. Mark Orr (special mention all con- ference)(.316 B.A.) had a grand slam homer at Fort. The other Eagle Senior was Greg Breunig who was also all tour- nament at Reedsburg and hit .264. John Cole (.261), Brad Breunig (.263), Darin Frey (.222), Matt Thompson, Brian Kuhnau, Mitch Breunig, Joe Welsch, and Derek Peetz were also integral parts of the '87 Eagles. This team participated in what will probably be regard- ed as the most controversial game in Eagle baseball history. Against Middleton in WIAA regional play, Sauk Prairie came back to take a 11-10 lead in the top of the seventh on hits by Greg Breunig and John Cole; Mark Orr's triple, and a single by Brad Breunig. After making outs deliberately, the Eagles rushed onto the field, but a rainstorm prevented Mid dleton from completeing its turn at bat. The score reverted back to 9-8 Middleton (score at end of sixth). Sauk Prairie had actually finished its season ahead on the scoreboard but with a loss in the record book. The 1987-88 Eagle Basketball team had an exciting year. We started the season slowly, but came on strong after Christmas to finish at 7-9 for conference action and 9-11 overall. Two wins over Stoughton, an overtime victory with Milwaukee River- side, and close losses to Middleton and Oregon proved that we could play with the best. This year's edition of the Varsity Eagles truly brought the community the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat. In the course of the season, fans saw: packed crowds in the new Outdoor Educational Facility as the Eagles battled 1986 State Champs, Monroe and 1987 State Champs, Middleton; tremendous excitement in a series of close ball games with conference foes Stoughton, Waunakee, Oregon, Monona Grove; and the return of tough physical football as witnessed by a thorough thrashing of always- tough Fort Atkinson. The Eagles can truly be proud of their efforts as they played with en- thusiasm and courage, only to come up short in the closing moments three times. They did everything they could and never gave less than a full effort. The Eagles closed the season at 4-5, but were only three plays away from a 7-2 record. Pride, enthusiasm, and physical aggressiveness-these are the trademarks of Eagle football, and in the fall of '87 they were in full view for all the fans to see. — Written by Mr. Terry Maschman Left — Scott Haas takes a breather from the action, while manager Joel Kirchner looks on. The team came from no wins last year, to an amazing 7-8 overall record this year and became the regional champions. James Hodges was voted number one goalie in the Badger Conference. Soren Mailing was unanimously voted outstanding player in Badger Con- ference, with the highest number of goals. Benn Flem- ing recieved all-conference for the first team, and Casey Holmquist recieved the same for the second team midfield. Bryan Mallon and Clay Jones recieved Honorable Mention. The boy's swim team slip- ped a notch from last year's championship performance to a second place finish at the conference meet. In the last five seasons the Eagles have won three conference cham- pionships and finished runner-up twice. This was a rebuilding year for the team after graduating seven seniors last year. The ten team Southern Swim Conference was sur- prised by the Eagle's outstan- ding performance. SPHS cap- tured two event champion- ships. Calvin Ramaker out- distanced the competition to win the 100 freestyle and the 400 free relay team of Travis Lukens, Shane Reddemann, Jeff Koch and Calvin Ramaker stunned the crowd by im- pressively winning the event and unseating the number one seed from Madison Edge wood. The team earned an im- pressive dual meet record of 6-1-1 losing only to the 1987-88 conference cham- pion Verona. The Eagle's took part this year in extending the team dual meet record since the 1985-86 season to 17 con- secutive victories. Captains Jeff Koch, Scott Schmidlkofer and coach Rick Conroy and assistant Tracy Madison witnessed a truly remarkable season unfold. Team honors went to Calvin Ramaker for MVP, Ken Mulhollon for most improved and Aaron Frosch, Chuck Bronder, and Shane Red- demann for most dedicated. The future for SPHS swimm- ing looks mighty bright. 140 — Boys' Swimming Left — Craig Brown races through the water with lightning speed as the camera captures his moment of glory. The freshmen tedm finished se- cond at the tough Water- town tournament crown- ing three champions, Ryan Hanson, Brad Ballweg, and Neil Boys. These and other freshmen also contributed to a J.V. team that finished with a 12-1 dual record overall and 7-1 in the con- ference. The J.V. wrestlers also won the Mt. Horeb tournament and finished second and third in the Wis. Dells and Baraboo tournaments respectively. Their dual record was 13-3 in tournaments, the Eagles won the Kickapoo team tournament in December; then in January won the Eagle In- vitational defeating number one ranked LaCrosse Aquinas eventual WISAA State Champs. Later in the month the Eagles also won the Mt. Horeb Invitational. To cap off their season, the Eagles won the Regional Cham- pionship upsetting fifth ranked and conference foe Middleton while qualify- ing all 11 of their wrestlers to the sectional tourna- ment. The Eagles finished fourth at the sectionals qualifying 3 wrestlers for the State Tournament. The team was rewarded for these accomplishments by being rated eigth in the final CROSS FACE state class A rankings. Individualac- complishments were led by Matt Elsing, Greg Boys, and Scott Haas who all qualified for State. Matt also won the Badger Con- ference Championship and Regional Championship at 185 lbs.
