SAUK PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL PRAIRIE DU SAC, WISCONSIN auk Prairie High School prides itself in its students and their Iutstanding contributions to it and the community. Sauk Prairie High School was started December 18, 1962, after an approval was signed April 12, 1962. The school was completed I February 1964 at a cost of $1,919,722.43- At the time, Ynrollment was 714 students with 44 faculty members. The swimming pool was constructed and adjoined to the gymnasium In 1967. Our present enrollment is 716 students with 60 facul- ty members. Changes in curriculum allowed students oppor- tunities for Vocational courses as well as academic courses. 1970, with the WlAA ruling, brought us a very large number of persons participating in athletics. The ruling required public schools to provide girls the same opportunities for participating in sports as boys. The ruling brought about our outstanding girls program to add to our excellent boys program. In 1973, Sauk Prairie High School presented its first all-school musical. As an instant hit, the musical became one of the highlights of the ex- tracurricular activities available for students. Indeed, we are a school of champions not only on athletic turf, but on the stage as well. THIS BOOK IS DEDICATED TO : LA VERNE G. STUCKEY In the 38 yean that La Verne Stuckey has been teaching, he has seen to it that the foundation has been laid in the youth that have passed through his classroom to the best of his ability. Mr. Stuckey is a man of great dedication and hard work. Because of the time and effort he has devoted to youth and Agricultural Education he has built up one of the largest and best FFA Chapters in the state of Wisconsin. He has spent endless hours working beyond what is expected of him as a teacher. You can often find him working in his little office in the evening and on Saturday afternoons. And tf he isn t there, there is a good possibility that he is on the road somewhere between here and there, going to or coming from a Judging Contest, a speaking contest, a Convention, a workshop, a meeting or a students farm for a home visit. Mr. Stuckey was bom in Wauzeka, Wisconsin where he grew up with his two older and two younger brothers. He lived on the family farm until his dad sold it after his mother passed away when Mr. Stuckey was only 6 years old. His dad took a Job in town and moved the five boys with him. There he tackled the job of raising the boys on his own for he never remarried. In his High Scool years Mr. Stuckey worked on his two uncles farms on Saturday afternoons and during the summer. He also played on his High School Varsity Basketball team for three years and the Varsity Baseball team for four years. After High School he joined the U.S. Navy and served for 2 and a half years. Of that 2 and a half years he spent 21 months in the South Pacific aboard the U.S.S Appalachian. After that he became a Gunner's Mate Second Class which is equivalent to a Staff Sergent in the Army. He was discharged May IS, 1946 and on June 3, 1946 he started Summer School at UW Platteville. He went to school on the Gl Bill of Rights and in 3 years with double summer sessions each year he graduated in June of 1949 with a Major Degree in Agriculture Education, a Minor Degree in Biological Science and 1 credit away from being a Chemistry Teacher. On July 1 of 1949 he started teaching Agriculture at Cashton High School and on August 16, 1949 he married Jeanne. After 15 and a half years of teaching at Cashton Mr. Stuckey decided to move on to bigger and better opperluni ies. Within two weeks he quit his job at Cashton, bought a home in Sauk Prairie and started teaching Agriculture here at Sauk Prairie on January 25, 1965. Here he will conclude 22 and a half years on June 30, 1987. In his 38 years of teaching Mr. Stuckey has not missed one day of school, and he has also attended all but 3 or 4 boys and girls home basketball games where he ran the clock. This is great dedication. During the summer Air. Stuckey works just as hard as he does during the school year. He travels throughout Wisconsin attending the Sauk. Dane. Columbia and Lodi County Fairs as well as the Wise. State Fair. He also attends the State FFA convention in June at Greenlake and every year in November, he takes a bunch of kids to the National FFA convention at Kansas City, Missouri. When Mr. Stuckey retires he plans to travel with his wife, spend more time golfing with Mr. Ban non and enhancing his skills at hunting and fishing. There is no real conclusion to this speech. Mr Stuckey isn't leaving us to go and live on the other side of the world. He will be here nearby, and his affiliation with Sauk Prairie High School will not end with his teaching career, and his mark upon the Agriculture Department will be forever lasting. We would like to thank Nichelle Holland for all the research she did for this speech, which she gave at the FFA Banquet. Good Luck on your new adventures. We will miss you!! 2 4 Upper Left: I will not tell Norwegian jokes in from of Mr.Scaff, I will not cell. . . Upper Right: I don't think Shakesperc did hand jive, Sarah. If we don7 ever search we 'll never he able to find. If we don’t attempt to get over our doubts and fears, we'll never discover how wonderful it is to live without them. If we don’go beyond difficulty, we won 'l grow any stronger. If we don't keep our dreams alive, we won't have our dreams any longer. . . . . . Just grow and go through each day with the knowledge that we can only take as much as we can give, and we can only get as much our of life as we allow ourselves to live . . . by- Collin McCarty Thank you for supporting me in my role as acting Senior Class President. Club gives the opportunity to meet and work with the foreign students being hosted in our community; our ef- forts increase our own international wunderstanding and knowledge of dif- ferent cultures. Along with learning about our own Sauk Prairie A.F.S. students, our community hosts A.F.S. weeekends every other year. This pro- vides for A.F.S. students from other high schools in Wisconsin to come to the Sauk Prairie area. Hi America, I'm Pete, and have been one of this years exchange students in your school. I come from Smorum, a smaller city, 45 miles from Copenhagen, Denmark. The place I came from is different in many ways, than here. For one thing wherever you are in Den- mark your close to the ocean. I would like to thank everyone at this school and of this community for making this an memorable year. A year I am always going to look back on with great pleasure. 1 would like especial- ly to thank Air. Olsen, Mr. Moe and Ms. Powers for helping me out this year. Pete Christianson Dear Friends, Fm Fernando Norena. I’m from Colombia. My city over there where 1 live has about 450,000 people: it is about 250 miles to the southwest of Bogota. Fm very glad that the family that was chosen for me is so wonderful. The students here are really friendly. I had the opportunity to help them, and they always helped me. Everything at this school is different from school in Colombia: the methods of teaching, study halls, lunch time, the locker system, cheerleaders, etc. But these differences are good. They change the school from boring to interesting. I would like to thank Mr. Budd for welcom- ing me on his basketball team, and also thanks goes to Mr. Olsen, Ms. Powers, and the other teachers who made possible my stay in this school. I am sure I never will forget this year in Sauk Prairie High School and I hope I will see you again. Fernando Norena 74 STUDENT SENATE The purpose of the Student Senate is to give the students a voice in governing the complete student body and in plannning its social activities. Each class has four representatives elected in the spring. It is the duty of representatives to attend every meeting and keep members of their class informed on the content of the meetings. Class Officers are also Senate members. The Senate is also responsible for all Homecoming ac- tivities and fundraising events. Senate members need to have leadership qualities. This is a non-profit club that in- volves athletic letter winners. They suppport and promote athletic policies of our school. Regular meetings are held mon- thly along with special meetings when necessary. The addition of soccer increased the number to 19 sports involved. These members provide club fees and fund rais- ing activities to benefit both the school and the student body they represent. All money raised goes toward school equipment, uniforms, awards at sports ban- quets, or any other need that may arise for which the club deter- mines. Students, in the past, have taken trips to professional spor- ting events as rewards for their hard work in raising money for the high school. FORENSICS Bottom Row L to R. Music Dtps took a voyage back to the I5th Century. It was a joyous Madrigal Din- ner that took place on the evenings of December 13th and 14 th, 1986. After many hours of planning and prepara- tion the commons became The Great Hall. Chamber Singers became Royalty. Treble Ensemble and Choral became peasants and beggers and the band transformed into Minstrels and Brass Choirs. The eight course meal was a great delight. Things uere started with a Wassail toast, and then were preceeded by soup, salad, teglab es. Prime Rib, fruit, and finished with flaming cherry pud- ding. The festivities continued all evening complete with a Royal Court. Jester. Troubader. Storyteller, Magicians. Acrobats. Beggers. and Wenches. At the close of the even- ings the Royal Court entertained us with the musical can- tata Once Upon A Christmas , accompanied by the Brass Choir. Soon after the reccenona! The Gnat Hall was brought down to ruins by the performers. it once again became the High School Commons. The Royal Court and Peasants became S.P.H.S. students and the Minstrels and Brass Choir players became band members, as they reluctantly put away then prized possesions. 1986 started to show Us face and the Huh century lost its nality as the banners, flags, unicorns and dragons wen put away. Costumes wen hung up and crowns wen shed. The songs that wen sung with vigor uere nou only hum- med as ue rode away, not on horses and chariots, but in cars. We secntly dnamt of the next encounter ue might have with a time from long ago. 87 1987 SAUK PRAIRIE BAND Top: S.P.H.S. They, along with their team mates, dur- ing their four year high school career, have won three conference champion- ships, compiled a dual meet record of 26-3 and placed second the year they did not win conference. Coach Conroy and his assistant Tracy Madison anx- iously await next year working with a tremendous group of freshman, sophomore and junior swimmers. Without the performance of these young men the Eagles would not have been number one. Team awards were earned by John Schmidlkofer as the individual MVP along with Jason Whitt, Mark Orr and Eric Risley recieving team M VP awards for their awesome school and conference records in the 400 free style relay (3:29.16). One of their main purposes is to lead the team's supporters in a single organized effort. The role of the cheerleaders has changed from leading cheers to generating school spirit by creating ban- ners and locker signs. Many hours are spent practicing and preparing for up- comimg games. Varsity cheerleaders are required to practice three times a week. Along with the preparations for the game. Cheerleaders must do fund rais- ing to buy their things. Ms. Duban and Ms. Nate supervises these activities along with making sure the squads fulfill their duties. As you can see much time and energy is spent promoting school spirit. lib Basketball Cheerleaders VARSITY Top Row (L R) Melissa Koenig, Kim Breunig, Cheryl Bruckcrc, Sue Kippley.
