Eagle Echo 1985 Sauk Prairie High School 105 Ninth Street Prairie du Sac, Wl Volume XXI This school year marks rhe 20rh anniversary of our school building. On June 1, 1961, Souk City and Prairie du Soc communities consolidated their school districts to become rhe Souk Prairie School Disrricr. Approval of o bond issue to build a new school was April 12, 1962, with ground breaking on December 18 of rhe some year. Completion of rhe building was in February 1964 or o cost of $1,919,722.43. Enrollment at that rime was 714 students with 44 faculty members. In 1967, rhe swimming pool was constructed and adjoined to rhe gymnasium. In our brief history, enrollment figures hove exceed- ed 950 students. Our present enrollment is 753 stu- dents with 54 faculty members. Curriculum changes throughout rhe years have allowed students rhe op- portunities for vocational os well as courses in rhe academia. Sauk Prairie High School boasts an excellent athletic program which stresses self-discipline and physical fit- ness. With rhe WIAA ruling in 1970 that requires public schools to provide girls rhe some opportunities for participating in sports os boys, our athletic program swelled in number. The girls' athletic program has been equally as outstanding as rhe boys. In 1973, Sauk Prairie High School presented its first oil- school musical. An instant hit, rhe production of a musical continues to be one of rhe highlights of rhe extracurricular activities available for students' involve- ment. Sauk Prairie High School takes pride in its students and their outstanding contributions to it and rhe com- munity. Indeed, we are a school of champions nor only on athletic turf, bur on rhe stage as well! AFS Creed Walk together, talk together, O ye peoples of the earth; then and only then, shall ye have peace. The American Field Service lnrernarional ln- rerculrural Program is an organizarion which ad- ministers student exchanges to promote better understanding among people on a local, nation- al and international level. Through AFS, students from any of 55 foreign countries come to the United Stores to live with families ond attend the senior year of high school. Also, through the Americans Abroad Program there is the oppor- tunity for students from the United Stores to spend o summer or year in one of 60 foreign countries. The U.S.A. program of AFS is the exchange of young people within the borders of their own country. The AFS Club gives the opportunity to meet and work with the foreign srudenrs being hosted in our own community,- our efforts increase our own international understanding ond knowl- edge of different cultures. There ore o variety of opportunities for each of us to find ond develop our own talents through the AFS Club. We welcome ond intro- duce the AFS srudenrs to our school ond commu- nity, work with the Adult Choprer to recruit exchange srudenrs ond host families, ond through fund-raising we ore able to assist sru- denrs being hosted. Soles of ice-cream, candy and popsides provide funds for our club. Along with learning about our own Souk- Proirie AFS srudenrs, our community hosts AFS Week-ends every other year. This provides for AFS srudenrs from other high schools in Wisconsin the opportunity to come to Souk Prairie High School ond be hosted by local families in their homes. Through AFS we hope to improve relations between countries. The youth of today ore the leaders of tomorrow — hopefully, this program will promote peace in our world. Kismet For o few short hours on the nights of opril 26, 27,, 28, and 2d of 1984, the stage of the Leahy Theater wos transformed into the ancient city of Baghdad. This wos the exotic setting for the musical KISMET which wos lost spring's annual oil-school production. Joining forces to present the musical were o total cost of 47 students and numerous other helpers behind the scenes and in the pit orchestra. KISMET, o variation from the srondord fore of Rodgers and Hommerstein productions usually presented or Souk Prairie, in- volved o very long and complicated plot, and one especially tricky scene where o man wos supposed to drown on stage. KISMET wos on ancient Baghdad word for fore. The musico! rokJ the role of o sly public poet whose big mouth, sharp wit, and clever schemes brought the twists and rums of his own fore and the fores of oil those who encountered him. The Coliph, or prince, of Baghdad or the rime of the story wos o most eligible bachelor, and women flocked from oil over to attempt to win his hand in marriage. He fell in love with the poor daughter of the poet, Morsinoh, who was later forced to marry the wicked Wozir (head of the police) to prevent her marriage to the Caliph. In the meantime, the poet fell in love with Lalume, the Wozir's Wife of Wives, and then a trio of foreign princesses, determined to marry the Coliph, arrived in Baghdad from distant land of Abobu. In the end, the poet killed the Wozir, the Caliph and Morsinoh were married, and the poet and Lalume ran off to on isolated spot in the desert colled The Oasis of Delightful Imaginings. Presented in o very professional manner by on experienced cost, KISMET was a fine show ond a credit to Souk Prairie High School. South Pacific SOUTH PAOFIC, the 1949 winner of the Pulitzer prize for dromo, wos rhe onnuol oil-school production this year. It was presented in the Leohy Theater on November 1, 2, 3, and 4. The musical doesn T hove o totally happy ending, though, because army lieutenant Joe Coble, who has fallen in love with o young native girl, Liar, is Isifled in rhe line of duty after he decides rhor he can't possibly marry her. Seobee Luther Dillis will probably be remembered best in his role of Honeybun or rhe Thanksgiving Follies He is usually only concerned with making o fast buck . His native counterpart, ’ 'Bloody Mary thinks along the some lines and keeps herself busy trying to sell gross skirts and shrunken heads to the island seobees The cost of SOUTH PACIFIC wos the largest ever or Souk Prairie High School, featuring 43 students in various roles. X Wrestling Wrestling is o sporr rhor requires speed, endurance, agility, and self-discipline. With an excellent coaching staff of Mr. Druno, Mr. Sigler, and Mr. DeLorme, and many arduous practices, the SP wrestling ream has built a strong and competitive program. The ream brought home Sauk Prairie's first Dodger Conference title in wrestling in 1982-83. In so doing, Sauk Prairie defeated arch rivals, the Stoughton Vi- kings, who had previously won the Conference title eight years consecutively. SPHS was proud to have Todd Seiler win the 185 weight class at the Store Wrestling Meet in 1984 The 1984-85 wrestling ream looks very promising, and could easily obtain another Conference title, and, hopefully a lor more. This season's ream was led by seniors Steve Yonke, Jay Chrisler, Don Anders, Drenr Albers, and Dennis Car encamp. Yanke was a sectional qualifiers last season. Anderson was voted most im- proved J. V. wrestler with on 11-2 record. Underclassmen who had a good season were Shawn Halverson who ranked third in the conference and was also a sectional qualifier. Steve Doerrcher and Todd Dreunig led last year's J. V. ream in takedowns and pins. Other returning lerrermen are juniors Kim Smith, Dan Kruchten and Steve Sprecheq sophomore Scott Sprecher. Another sophomore who added depth to the ream was Steve Seldon.
