For these and all the other little tasks which mean so much, we say Thank you. Annual Staff 1959 PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE TO THE STUDENTS’ It has been said that Education is not something done to but something done by an indi- vidual which is actually self-educational. It is a slow, subtle growth entailing a life-time of self-discipline and an unquenchable passion to learn and to grow up to full stature of one's abilities. The outcome should be competent, self-active, responsible, and socially minded citizens whose lives are predicated on faith, courage, integrity, intelligence and the will to achieve. Our schools are but one of the institutions, one of the many contributing agencies used by the individual in his quest of knowledge. However it is here that the foundation is laid for future growth and development and therefore it is extremely important that they be administered welL W. E. The first important event was initiation. Everyone had a very enjoyable time at the party doingallthe stunts prescribed by the Sophomores. Another memorable event was our Sauk City Cardinals participating in the State Basketball Tournament, which took place in the University Field House in Madison. The Cardinals captured third place, being defeatdd only by Shawano. In the fall of 1956, fifty-three Sophomores returned to Sauk High. During this year we had a five-period system; which eliminated the study hall. At the end of the year we ordered our class rings, which was a big thrill. We lost ten more of our classmates when we came back for our Junior Year. We returned to our six-period system. One of our accomplishments was our one-act Play, Antic Spring , which took first place in our own school competition and went on to receive a B at the league. This was a very busy year spent preparing for our Junior Prom. Our decorations were centered around the theme, Deep Purple . Our reigning king and queen were Tom Walsh and Gloria Grauvogl. This year we returned to our Sauk High with great expectations of our Senior Year which was filled with many events. Out first triumph was our float in the Homecoming Parade which received second place. In October we had our Senior pictures taken by Morrison Studio. We received them just before Christmas, so everyone was busy exchanging pictures with their classmates. The first event in May to start the many events before graduation is our Class Trip. We are going to Chicago and will stay at the Sherman Hotel. We will leave on May 11th and we will return on May 12th. Next, comes our Senior Banquet on May twentieth. On the twenty-first and the twenty-second we will take our last semester exams. Class night will be on May twenty-second. The climax will be our Commencement which will be on May twenty-seventh, when forty-one Seniors will receive their diplomas. All the Seniors will miss Sauk City High School and will always remember all of these memorable events. First important event was the receiving of our class rings which have been eagerly awaited for since we ordered them the previous year. Early in February we started to work on our Junior Prom which was to be held in May. The theme chosen was Isle Dreams . We organized committees and everyone worked hard toward making it a big success. Our achievements throughout the year started with our Homecoming Float, Hold That Line , which took first place in the parade. Earl Lochner and David Frey were elected to the Homecoming Court. In November our class one-act play, Sunday Costs Five Pesos , took first place in our school competition and also received a B rating in the District Competition. On the first day of our presence among all these students we were acquainted with PART of the custom of initiating newcomers. We were also warned that the worst was yet to come. INITIATION! It wasn't as bad as we had expected, but it wasn't good either. We ended up carrying the Sophomores' books, reciting poetry to them, and worst of all, wearing their silly costumes and performing their stunts at the party in the evening. On the whole we all had a lot of fun and we gave the Sophomores a return party later in the year. Allen Van Keuren and Roger Frosch were elected to represent our class on the Home- coming Court. The name of our class float for the Homecoming parade was Practice Makes Perfect. In November our class one-act play, Let's Make Up, placed second in our school competition. We had a lot of fun doing this play and we hope to put on another successful play next year. SAUK PRAIRIE STAR STUDENT COUNCIL This year the student council has made many changes in the regular routine. We sponsored a very successful Homecoming, as usual. We had nice weather, won our game, and the dance was a big success. As the year progressed, the first thing that was different from previous years was the Thanksgiving program. We had never had one before and it proved to be very successful; with a skit, group singing, and many numbers done by the students. The Christmas program was a big change'from the usual program. Instead of everyone in school contributing to the Empty Stocking Fund we contacted the Welfare Department of Sauk County and made arrangements that this money would be used for the needy in our own com- munity. This money was presented to a representative of the Welfare Department at the pro- gram. Then we had a few numbers presented by the students and finished up the program with a dance. All of the money made on concessions at the dance were given to the Tuberculosis Mobile X-ray Unit. We also had a Mr. AND MRS, Santa Claus this year. Marty Roos was Mr. Santa and Mrs. Robert (Lois) Koenig was Mrs. Santa. We had a contest for guessing them and prizes were awarded at the end of the dance. In February we sponsored a Twirp Week and had charge of the concession stand for the basketball tournament. We also had a Valentine program similar to the Christmas program. We had a very successful clothing drive this year, with many students bringing clothing and toys. We closed out the year with the All-School Dance. This was the last activity of their high school career for all the Seniors and was held the night after Commencement. This dance brought a very successful year to a very successful close.
