LEAHY Supervising Principal It ia most appropriate that our Annual Staff has 3een fit to dedicate this year's edition of the Annual to Mrs. Earl McFarlane, who served as clerk of our school board for the past 15 years. School boards have under their direction the most important, the most technical, and the most difficult public business. More money is spent on the schools, more people are employed in them, and more people are affected by them than by any other local public undertaking. We wish to acknowledge with deep understanding and sincere appreciation the unselfish and faithful service of all our school board members, past and present. C. R. Aa we gaze Into the crystal ball, we look back Into the past and see our four years of high school life. Everything that we have done and that had happened during these four years bring back------------MEMORIES. FRESHMEN What sights ! Tall upper classmen looking over the crop of bubbler babes, teachers all over the place, scared, mixed-up freshmen lined up against the walls with a look of confusion and dispair on their faces. Tills is a brief discription of our first day, September 8, 1951, at Sauk City High School. The one event that was and still is foremost in our minds was fresh- men initiation. Being smeared with lipstick and wearing various combinations of clothing made us full fledged students of Sauk High. The boys that Joined the FFA that year also remember that initiation. They rolled Jelly beans the length of the old gym floor with their noses to become Greenhorns of the FFA. SOPHOMORE We came back in the fall of 1952 and were determined that we would not be overruled and looked down upon as was the case during our freshman year. We started our second year by initiating the freshmen. An Indian Pow Wow, put on by the Sauk and Prairie school bands as a halftime show, was an unique part of our sophomore year homecoming activities. This homecoming game was the championship game, and by winning it, we gained the football co-opampionship with Prairie. Mrs. Vogel was our Home Ec. teacher that year and under her direction a Future Homemakers Club was organized. One of the club activities was the sponsoring of a fashion show for their mothers and the rest of the girls in school. Several students of our class turned actors and actresses that sophomore year and put on a one-act play, Curse you. Jack Dalton, in competition with the Juniors and came out second best. We remember the skating rink behind school where several ice skating parties were held. We gladly let it become a memory that spring when the construction of our beautiful gymnasium-auditorium was started. In the spring, Mr. and Mrs. Anderson were seriously injured in an automobile accident and consequently the agriculture class had three different teachers during Mr. Anderson's convalescence. As an English field trip, we went to Baraboo to view the movie, Ivanhoe. JUNIOR As an alternate representative to Badger Boys' State, Cliff Haas attended the 1953 session at Ripon College. Luella Meyer attended Badger Girls' State in 1954 at the University of Wisconsin. A band Tag Day and the cnoosing and receiving of our class rings were the big events of the first part of our Jun- ior year. The class obtained a better understanding of the novel Julius Caesar this year, when we viewed it as a movie in Baraboo. After much work and some play, the Junior prom was held on April 23, 1954, featuring the theme of Harbor Lights. King Fred Breunig and Queen Joyce Mahoney lead the march with Marlene Hicks, Carol Uselman, Ann Breunig, Mary Jane Fike, Birdine Benfer, and Patty Kreul and their escorts comprising the court. In the spring festival, the band ended a very successful year by being selected as the best band in Class C competition in concert and marching. The sports year also ended in fine fashion as the baseball team won the league championship. SENIOR Homecoming festivities, with Jim Fasking reigning as king, was a highlight this year. Even though it was almost heart-breaking to see the football champ- ship slip from our hands into the hands of our archrival Prairie, we started our sports year with a successful football season. Leroy Lamberty was elected Most Valuable Player by the squad and Fred Breunig was honored as honorary co- captain of the team. Following the football season, excitement reigned around school as we began looking forward to playing our first basketball game in the new gymnasium. This memorable game was played against DeForest with our team winning by a score of 64-47. The rest of the year was spent in working on the senior play, having a senior banquet, and ending the year with baccalaureate services, senior class trip, and finally commencement. Mr Halloran (Agriculture), Mr. McReynolds (Coach and Social Studies), Miss Field (English), Mrs. Schenken- berg (English and Phy. Ed.), Mrs. Maier and Mrs. Vogel (Home Ec.), and Mr. Schneider and Miss Andersen (Music), were other teachers, no longer on the faculty, that worked with us during our four years. As we look back on the four year stay at Sauk High we see that it was a memorable one. The last day finally arrives, the thirty-one graduates say good-bye to Sauk High, our teachers and friends and look toward the future searching for our place in the world........ S. Thel3en; D. Ballweg; D. Caflisch; R. Hering; J. Kennedy; p. Theisen; Patsy Alt; Seated; M. Bongard. Many couples enjoyed dancing to the music of Norm Kingsleys Or- chestra at the Junior Prom April 15 1955. The theme of the prom was the song I'll Remember April . The gym was beautifully decorated with flowers and a white picket fence surrounding the dance floor. Spring scenes of other countries were portrayed on the side walls of the gym. The king and queen were crowned at the throne in the northeast corner of the gym. Seated: Pat Theisen- Vice-Pres. Bj the vote of the underclassmen, seniors who had been in the FFA in previous years were allowed to be act- ive members of the chapter this year, as there was no senior class because of insufficient enrollment. This was the third year that the local chapter has put on the Vitality Seed sale. The high salesman of the campaign received a cash prize. The chapter received 20 of the sales and if the chapter made it3 goal each salesman got 10% of the sales he made. This year the chapter has initiated a new activity that has proved very successful. Our high- stepping band opened the festivities by leading the afternoon parade fea- turing the king and queen, their court of honor, and the class and organiza- tional floats. The winning floats that rated first, second, and third were High and Mighty sponsored by the Junior class, We'll Sail over Lodi by the sophomores, and We'll Worm Through Lodi by the seniors. At the touch of a match, the bonfire blazed fiercely and pro- claimed the beginning of the evening activities. Pep songs led by the band and cheers led by the cheer- leaders put everyone into the mood of inspiring our boys to a victory. Preceding the game the band gave a short program and presented King Jim Fasking and Queen Eileen Marx. Kick-off time was 7:30. The first half ended with Lodi leading 6-0, and the band appearing between halves, executing a series of maneu- vers depicting Sports Through the MLMOTtXLS Seasons. A fighting Sauk City team returned to the field the second half and won the game from Lodi by a score of 14-6. Do you remember past homecom- ings? Our theme, Memories , featured scrapbook pages from 1944-1954. They decorated the walls of the new gymnasium and supplemented the silver footballs, stars and slogans used to carry out our theme. To the music of Jerry Blake, the king, queen, and court of honor- Joyce Lang, Lloyd Ballweg, Wylina Kippley, Ervin Breunig, Louise Breunig, Neal Lamberty, Joann Maier, Jerry Preston, Maureen Zimmer- man, Dan Breunig, Marilyn Crapser, Ken Mack, Karen Bongard and Dick Pape led the grand march. Leroy Lamberty, one of the football captains, crowned Jim, king, and in his turn Jim crowned Eileen, queen, before the large number of people attending the dance. Another page of Memories was added to those already displayed. Fred Breunig and Francis Young were elected co-captains by the football squad. The team voted to purchase a trophy for the Most Valuable Player. It will be kept in the trophy case and each year the name of the selected player will be engraved on it. Leroy Lamberty was elected Most Valuable Player for the past season so his L. Lamberty name will be the first to be put on the trophy. F. 3reunlg F. Young ST ROW: Patterson, Blum, F. Breunig, D.
