A (tie The early hlatory of Sauk City Indicates that a frame sohool building 18x24, the first school In Sauk County, was In use In 1841 for about three months. It apparently was used In an unfinished state for several years since the 184? records show that a meeting was held to vote on plastering the school and making other repairs. It was now a winter sohool, the term being Increased from six to seven months of schooling. In 1853 an addition was built to the original structure at the west end with an entry between the two rooms. It did servloe until 1872, when It became Inade- quate, and wes replaced by a frame building of two rooms of greater proportion. The sohool system was growing beyond the pioneer stage. In 1875 a law was passed to establish and give state aid to free public high schools and three years later In 1879 under the prlnclpalshlp of Mr. Bunoy, the first high sohool commencement was held with four girls receiving diplomats. In 1895 the high school was placed on the accredited list and four years of training were necessary to graduate Instead of the three previously required. In 1891, the two- room building was replaced by a red brick building which served as the high school, with one of the grades holding Its ses- sions there. However, In 1916 the present high school was erected and the 1891 building was used for the grades only, and has been used for that purpose up to the spring of 1953, when the new grade school on the west- ern edge of the village was ready for oooupancy In the fall of the year. At present, the high school Is utilizing the former grade sohool for band, commercial, and agricultural classes. Under construction and ready for use In February Is the gymnasium-auditorium which will seat 1620 people. For baseball and football games, the high school has the use of the athletlo field on the northern edge of the village where con- tests may be held In the daytime, or at night under the floodlights. Today we have a large expanding school system of which the community may be Justly proud. ?3C - r- - ?sy 1879 ALUMNI OF SAUK CITY HIGH SCHOOL 1879-1953 Ida Merk (Mrs. I. M.
