The 1980 Northeast Champs The 1980 Girls Jr. High Field Hockey Team won the North- eastern Conference Title with an outstanding record of 7 wins and losses. This is the second year in a row that the girls have won the championship. The team played extremely well all season long as they clearly dominated the majority of their games. During their seven game season, Saugus scored 20 goals while only allow- ing 1 goal to be scored against them. The team displayed a well balanced attack as eight players contributed to the of- fense. Colleen Wall led the way with 7 goals followed by Kristin Potito with 5 goals and 4 assists and Donna Serino with 4 goals and 5 assists. Sharon Serino and Kim Carter led the way on defense as each girl played tremendously in all of the games. Along with Kristin Potito, Maggie Buchan, Susan O ' Malley and Michelle Serino are the players to watch in the upcom- ing season. With An Undefeated Season, The Junior High Girls Took Sole Possession Of The First Place In The Northeast Conference. The girls ' S.J.H. Basketball Team ended their season with a thrilling two point victory over a tough Winthrop team. This win gave the team aperfect 12-0 record and sole possession of first place in the Northeastern Conference. The team played tremendously for the entire season as they dominated their opponents in a majority of the games. Teamwork was the key to the team ' s success as each player contributed to the final out comes. The team was led by Co-captains Donna Serino and Sharon Serino. Their leadership and abilities, along with those of Kim Carter, Julie Parsons, and Colleen Wall were the principle reasons for the team ' s overwhelming season. These ninth grade girls inspired the rest of the team through their own example and dedication. Eighth graders Lisa Williams and Kristin Potito did a super job coming off the bench. Susan O ' Malley, Julie Bertrand, Maggie Buchan, Lisa Doucette and Nancy Thornton all demonstrated their willingness to work and desire to improve. In the twelve game season, the team was led by Donna serino ' s 168 points and 140 rebounds, Kim Carter ' s 117 points and 119 rebounds, Colleen Wall ' s 100 points and Julie Parson ' s 78 rebounds. Sharon Serino was the top defensive player on the team as she continually outplayed and outhustled her opponents. Lisa Williams, as eighth grader, added 63 points and 70 rebounds off the bench. Congratulations to each and every team member on their undefeated season. BOYS ' BASKETBALL 1980-81 Front: Larry Heise, Peter Milano, Frank O ' Hearn, Peter Vient, Mike Soper, Brian Crabtree. Row 2: Steve Hayes, Joe Santosuosso, Tom Trainor, Kevin Pelley, Steve Gautreau, and Coach John Flynn Missing from photo: Eric McGrane An 11-1 Record Places Saugus Second In The Northeast Conference For The 1980-81 Season Freshman Basketball was exciting this year, the team posted an 11-1 recoid. The teamwork was encouraging throughout the season, and it made, for its members, a solid, dependable unit. The league was well balanced and provided a series of thriller-type games with very few points separating the victors from the victims. Although the fine record stands a proud achievement, the fact that the team could hold on, or come from behind, or battle the outcome right to the final buzzer is the measure of the quality of the players. The loss to Memorial of Beverly was far from a disgrace, as we finished in second place to their undefeated season. With a team such as this, outstanding or most valuable are terms that apply to each of the members - some consistently; all at one time or another. 54 SEVENTH AND EIGHTH GRADE TEAM A 4-4 Season Front: Mike Hollow, Eric Johnson. Missing from photo: Jim Bambury, Paul Woodworth, and Manager-Mike Colbert. The 7th-8th grade squad battled to a 4-4 season record. The end of the sea- son saw them hitting full stride, and their teamwork and play execution was vastly improved. 56 HOCKEY 1980-81 Team Roster Junior High Hockey Team: Fred Moore, John Sobolenski, Ke- vin Langone, Bob Cinelli Russ Mur- ray, Doug Couillard, Ed Worthy, Anthony Cogliano, Paul Ventre, An- drew Wallace, Michael Solano, John Murphy, Jim Corbett, Mark Breault, Stephen Hanna, Scott Breault, Chris Downing, Eric Jarosz, Bob Trespas, Jim Alcott, John Dobbyn, Eric Sand- ers. The team matched the play of undefeated Winthrop the fifth game of the season only to see Winthrop score late in the game to win although Saugus displayed a tremendous team effort.
