On October 4th Saugus played to an 8 - 8 tie with Salem in the first home game of the season. Saugus marched 88 yeard with STEVE FAUCI scoring from 4 yds out. KEVIN PELLEY caught a pass from Fauci for the PAT. The Defense held Salem off the scoreboard til late in the 4th quar- ter to account for the tie. A sweep around left end enabled ROBERT SNYDER to score the second TD. In its first shut out the Defensive Unit played an outstanding game. Defensive Star was awarded to STEVE FAUCI and Offensive Star was given to ROBERT SNYDER while JAY STAPLES was awarded the Game Star. Saugus kept its unbeaten season alive with a 15 - 6 victory over a stubborn Marblehead team. For the first time in the season Saugus Defense man- aged to come from behind and stop the conver- sion attempt by Marblehead. On the ensuing kick - off Saugus was stopped on its own 15 yd line, however, with only 3 minutes left of the half Saugus drove 85 yds to score on an 8 yd run by STEVE FAUCI. The 2 point conversion was scored on a fake kick pass from JAY STAPLES to STEVE FAUCI. ROBERT SNYDER ran 35 yards in the 3rd quarter to score the second T.D.. He also kicked for the PAT. Offensive Stars were awarded to JEFF SNYDER, JAY STAPLES, and ROBERT SNYDER while ANTHONY AN .A LONE was given the Defensive Star. (lame Star was awarded to STEVE FAUCI lor his leadership in the offensive unit . We ' re Number One In The Northeast Conference With a 5-0-1 record Saugus met Lynn English on November 1st and managed to chalk up its second shut out with a 16-0 score. Jay Staples scored the first TD through a 25 yd pass reception from Jeff Snyder. The conversion was scored by Steve Fauci. Late in the 3rd quarter Jay Staples scored his second TD and then threw to Steve Fauci for the P.A.T. ' s. Saugus defense only allowed English 57 yards. Earning the Defensive Star was Anthony Anzalone. Offensive Star was earned by Jay Staples. Game Stars were given to Eugene Anzalone and Dan Swimm. In a game marked by much excitement and anxiety Saugus tied unbeaten Swampscott 6-6 leaving both teams in con- tention for first place in the league with identical 6-0-2 records. It was not until the 4th quarter when Saugus marched 86 yards that the game became tied. Steve Fauci scored for Sau- gus on a 2 yd quarterback sneak. Excellent runs were made by Robert Snyder, Jeff Snyder and Jay Staples against a strong Swampscott defense. Outstanding line play was shown by Mark Strangie, Dan Swimm, Anthony Anzalone, and Dan Monico. By defeating Lynn Classical 26-0 in the last game of the season the undefeated Saugus Frosh earned a TIE FOR FIRST PLACE IN THE NORTHEAST CON- FERENCE with Swampscott. Outstanding offensive players in the fi- nal game were Jay Staples with 2 TD ' s and a PAT, Jeff Snyder and Tim White each with 1 TD, Robert Snyder, and Anthony Guthro with strong running, and Steve Fauci, Jeff Snyder, Mike Wortman, John Bambury and Dan Swimm who all helped earn the third shut out of the season. In retrospect both Coach Petrone and Coach Keddy viewed the 1979 team as a talented one - perhaps the hardest hitting team in the conference - and an easy one to coach as they matured with each practice and game. The 1979 Field Hockey team finished the season with a 6-0-2 record. As a team, Saugus scored 24 goals in their 8 game season while they only allowed 8 goals to be scored against them. The season began with a team of less than one half veterans and worked extremely hard throughout the season to build team and individual efforts which contributed to a championship season. The team was led in scoring by Pam Thornton who had an unprecedented 14 goals and 3 assists. Co- captain Nancy Tremblay had 4 goals and 3 assists and Colleen Wall added 2 goals and 5 assists as well as endless energy in every game. Sharon Serino, Kim Carter, and Ellen Fee played tremendous defense with each girl displaying constant hustle and determination throughout the season. The 8th grade boys team won the league championship for the 1979-80 season by winning all 14 games played. The boys overpowered many opponents with a fastbreaking offense. However, in the close contests, defense proved to be the team ' s strong point. An undefeated season is rare at any level of competition. The boys are to be congratulated for this achievement. Si . . From One On One Types To Team Players The 1979-80 Freshman basketball season had its full share of ups and downs. The overall record was a disappointing 4-10, but the improvement of individual players and team skills overrode the final statistics. JOHN FERRARI, named the team ' s MOST VALUABLE PLAYER, showed tremendous growth as an athlete, as he was dominant on both offense and defensive control of the boards. LOUIS MILANO was responsi ble for bringing the ball upcourt and setting the offense in motion, which he did with regularity and poise. SHAWN HARTIGAN, CAPTAIN of the team, made a mid-season adjustment from guard to forward and kept the flow of the offense going. RAY NO RIGHT LAWTON, had an early season scoring spurt and settled in as a solid contributor for the team. DAN SWIMM came off the bench often and helped dominate the defensive boards and add some bulk to the team. STEVEN WILLIAMS moved into guard position when Hartigan changed to forward, and played very good team ball. His quick pace was responsible for many point tallies the team made. STEVEN FAUCI was a contributing forward in the early season, but lost his starting position to some torn ligaments which sidelined him for the rest of the games. RUSS EVANS and TIM SWIRKA gave the team backup at the guard positions and did their jobs well. DAN MONICO provided help as utility man in both guard and forward positions. SCOTT McKENNEY, BRIAN McCALLUM, JACK FERREIRA and TOM MUISE were forwards who made contributions to the team and were dependable in their output. Coach Flynn said These players on this team changed from one on one types to team players, a growth that will improve their overall abilities in the high school years and beyond. Forwards Shawn Nichols, Mike Papasordoro, Tim O ' Brien, Gary Lembo, John Sobolewski, Lou Finnocchiaro, Greg Natola, Lou Comeau, Charles Barbanti, Bill Auger Lou Finocchiaro, snawn iNicnois and Greg Natola The Junior High Hockey team began the 1979-80 Hockey season with a tie with a stong Gloucester team in the last minutes of the game. The second game of the season saw Saugus lose 6-0 to the league leading Winthrop team. The third and subsequent games saw Saugus either win or tie. The Saugus team defeated Salem 4-1, Briscoe 6-2, Eastern 7-2, Marblehead 4-0 and tied Memorial of Beverly 2-2. Outside the league the team defeated St John ' s Prep 2-1, Wakefield 6-2 and were defeated in a close game by Stoneham 2-1. The 1979-80 team was built around several veteran players: GREG NATOLA - the CAPTAIN who led the scoring this year, LOU FINOCCHIARO - last year ' s leading scorer, DAVE ST. PIERRE and ED SERVICE who proved valuable as the number one defense while also adding scoring punch. The team depended heavily on the goalie - JAY STAPLES to keep the other teams off the scoreboard, which he did with surprising regularity. As the season progressed the second line of BILL AUGER, CHARLES BARBANTI and MIKE PAPASODORO started to click scoring some important goals and doing an effective job of checking the other team. TOM O ' CONNELL and KEVIN SERVICE played well together on defense and improved with every game. Special mention should be made of two players who filled in on first and third lines: SHAWN NICHOLS and GARY LEMBO who made great contributions in scoring and checking. Others who contributed with good attitude and hard work on and off the ice were: TIM O ' BRIEN, MIKE CICCARELLI, JOHN SOBOLEWSKI, LOU COMEAU, PAUL VENTRE, FRED MOORE and JIM DOHERTY - the back-up goalie.
