In this game an in- experienced Saugus team, down by 3 TD ' s was able to hold Winthrop scoreless in the second half . Playing well for Saugus were PHIL NAPOLI - TANO, PAT LeBRANTI and MARK SWAIN. With one week to practice before facing the Lynn 1 ' A ' 1 team, Saugus vowed to ■ ' do it 1 ' and thus worked hard to strengthen the defense and polish the offense . The effort paid off and Saugus defeated Lynn 1 ' A ' 1 14 - 12. Game star was awarded to ROBERT SNYDER who scored all 14 points and gained over 100 yards. Defensive stars were PHIL NAPOLITANO and MARK LIT- TLEFIELD. PAT LeBRANTI took control of the game from the QB slot which earned him the Of- fensive star of the game . In an outstanding defensive game, Saugus de- feated Danvers 6-0 on October 5th. Offensive star was awarded to ROBERT SNYDER who scored Saugus ' points. MIKE SWAIN was awarded the Defensive star. Game stars were awarded to PHIL NAPOLITANO, MARK LITTLEFIELD and STEVE RUSSO. Outstanding players were MIKE GUTOWSKI, JAY STAPLES, and BILL TAM- BEAU. The following week the Saugus team was de- feated before they could get started as Salem managed to capitalize on 2 quick TD ' s, 2 inter- ceptions and a blocked punt to defeat Saugus 49-0. Saugus seemed to come alive after its slaughter by Salem and played its best game of the season the next week against Beverly- Memorial. Behind 1 2 - at the half , Saugus got it together and fought back to score twice in the second half - the second score and points coming with only 29 seconds left in the game . TD 1 s were scored by ROBERT SNY - DER on a long run and JOHN GALASSO on a pass from PAT LeBRANTI . JOHN GALASSO scored the points after on a pass from LeBRANTI . Game star was awarded to BRAD WHITE for his offen- sive play as well as his defensive work including an interception in the last play of the game . Of- k O Carthy, Bob Merlina. Row 3: Mr. Keddy, Robert Snyder, Jim McManus, Jim Roberts, John Bourque, Joe McMorrow, Paul Blake, Phil Napolitano, Steve Russo, Mark Little - field, Jeff Snyder, Mike Gutowski, Jim Nigro, John Chamberlain, Dan Muldoon (E.M.T. ) . Missing from photo: Mr. Flynn and Eric Conant 1978-79 fensive stars were given to JOHN GALASSO and JOHN CHAMBERLAIN while Defensive stars were shared by PAT LeBRANTI , MIKE SWAIN and PHIL NAPOLITANO. In a game where the two teams were equally matched the Saugus Offense was able to come up with 6 points in the last few minutes to defeat Gloucester 6-0. Recovering from a bumbling first half filled with fumbles, missed passes, and all round poor play, Saugus came back from a 12-0 half time score to tie Marblehead 12-12 for a final score. Defensive stars were awarded to PAT LeBRANTI and PHIL NAPOLITANO while JOHN CHAMBER- LAIN , JOHN PRENTICE and JAY STAPLES shared the Offensive star. Game star was awarded to PHIL NAPOLITANO. Saugus suffered its third loss of the season to Lynn English the next week in a game where the offense controlled the ball about 75 c : of the time. The final score was 25-12. JAY STAPLES who scored both TD 1 s for Saugus was awarded the Offensive star. STAPLES scored his second TD by completing a pass from PRENTICE . The game was marked with excellent effort on the part of JIM NIGRO who was awarded the game star. Saugus swamped Swampscott in the final game of the season by a score of 20-6. Scoring twice for Saugus was ROBERT SNYDER who covered 47 yards on 2 plays to give Saugus its 12 points. STAPLES scored on a 15 yard run for 6 more points. NIGRO made the conversion on a pass from LeBRANTI . The defense managed to keep Swampscott scoreless until the last few minutes of the game . ROBERT SNYDER was awarded the Offensive star and PHIL NAPOLITANO received the Defensive star. Saugus ended the season with a 5-3-1 record. The coaches viewed the season in retrospect as one which saw an inexperienced team develop its athletic talents to a point where it became a cohesive unit. They look forward to an out- standing 79-80 season with the return of 2 veteran starters as running backs. Mr O ' Leary in a pensive moment The Track team roster for spring 1978 was: Greg Peach, Paul Scortino , Mike Varrone, John Regan, Jim Phelan, Steve Sheridan, Dan Giadone , Doug Bar- nett, Tony Angelone , RichBettano, Dan O ' Brien, Frank Gaff ney , Chris Vata- laro, Chris Matthews, Dave Lynn, Bill Phillips, Kevin Kramich, John Chap- pie , Dom Prestone , Brad White , Kevin 1 Brien , Jim McManus , Jim Sturniolo , TimOlsen, Brian Healy, Steve Wood, Ed Bradford, Frank Dollaher, John Sher- idan, Tom Harrington, Kevin McDermott and Ed Service. BRAD WHITE turned in an outstanding performance being a consistent winner in the HIGH JUMP, TRIPLE JUMP and occa- sionally the 100 yd LOW HURDLES . He cap- tured 1st place in the Conference Meet with a 5 ' 2 ' ' leap . He received the Track G Field Award at the Annual Awards Assembly. JIM McMANUS was a consistent performer with accomplishments in the LOW HUR- DLES, LONG JUMP, and 220 KEVIN O ' BRIEN and ED BRADFORD earned their points in the Distance Runners Races - the 1 2 mile and the 1 mile runs. Mr O ' Leary looks forward to the Spring 1979 season with great optimism about his veteran 9th graders. Jump - Jump - Jump ! The Freshman Basketball team played some very good basketball in a season that was somewhat disappointing . In its 5 wins , the team was led by some hard work on the parts of those who learned to play a team effort . The team had to change its strategy midway through the season due to the change in roster caused by injuries. This, however, along with the effort of the remaining players led to a respectable win loss record , A Team Effort Plus Outstanding Players Contribute To Season Record Outstanding players of the 1979 Basketball season included DAVID PEACH , the captain, who was the season ' s high scorer; BOBMERLINA, who followed closely in the scoring department; BOB LESSARD, the playmaker, both offensively and defensively; MARK LAC AILLADE , a constant source of irri- tation to the opponents and valuable asset to the offense; and JIM STURN- IOLO, the team ' s most improved ballplayer, and one of the main reasons the team was able to make the necessary adjustments to improve the season record. Others who contributed noticeably to the team were MARK BERTRAND, who fractured an ankle early in the season and returned later to bolster the team; BRAD WHITE, STEVE EVITTS, MIKE SWAIN and ANDY SNOWDEN who were faithful to their tasks; and JIM NIGRO, JIM PERRY, PAT DES- MOND and PAT LEBRANTI . The seventh eighth grade basketball team finished the season with a 6-8 record. The record, although statisti- cally a losing one , is one which was successful in many ways. Injuries and inexperience played a part in a number of close losses. The injuries also caused many other players to develop their skills rapidly in game situations . With the planned return of many veteran players and the obvious im- provement of many players , the team is looking forward to next season with enthusiasm and the confidence that they will improve the season ' s record. Grade Eight Team Row 1 : Brian Crabtree , Tom Struzziero , Frank O ' Hearn, Bob Allan, Lou Milano Steve Williams, Mike Soper. Row 2: Steve Fauci , John LaCortiglia , Bryan McCallum, John Ferrari, Ray Lawton, John Delello, Larry Gaff, Tim Swirka, Tom Trainor, Sean Hartigan. Missing from photo : Larry Heise , Brian Poole , Dan Swimm and Mr. Dunn. Girls ' Basketball The Girls 1 Basketball team had a very successful season with a record of 10- 5 . The girls worked very hard all season long and proved both their offensive and defensive abilities game after game . The team was led in scoring by BABE EMBERLEY with 90 points , JENNIFER KANE with 1 24 points , SANDI COSTIG AN with 110 points, and PAM THORNTON with 103 points. JENNIFER KANE was the team ' s top rebounder as she did an outstanding job on the boards each and every game. JANET ARSENAULT and TERRI THORNTON improved tremendously throughout the season and did an excellent job coming off the bench . CATHY HASHEM , NANCY TREMBLAY and DONNA SERINO will be the players to watch next year as they each have the potential and desire to develop in to good all around players. The three goalies have allowed only 11 goals and had an amazing 4 SHUT-OUTS in eight games played thus far.
