Missing from photo: Tom Anderson and Mike Barasso, and David Coviello Doug Orlando Brian Gillespie Mark Kryzwicki The Junior High Football team had a 7-2 record this season. The defensive unit gave up the least amount of points to the opposing teams in the history of the school. Offensively, the team scored with disciplined drives as well as on the sparkling-type play. Kick off returns 60, 70 and 82 yard runs for scores, pass plays for big yardage - the team had its share; the drive, more often used, was much more satisfying. Individual players con- tributed to the team ' s effort and during the course of the season were awarded offen- sive and defensive players of the week or star of the game awards. Winthrop was the first foe to fall to Saugus with a 14-8 score. This game was high- lighted by the play of STEVE PEACH, who was awarded the GAME STAR. Swampscott folded 20-0 as Saugus 1 defense began to jell and the offense perked up to better workings. The GAME STAR was awarded to BUDDY STAPLES and the DEFENSIVE STAR was shared by STEVE PEACH and PAUL SCIORTINO. The first loss of the season Buddy Staples MS Joe Gillis Brian Silver was a 6-0 game with the Lynn A team. Saugus scored an impressive 34-12 victory over Danvers. The team, under the leadership of STEVE PEACH and BUDDY STAPLES, who were awarded the GAME STARS, played well. ALAN COPPOLA received the OFFENSIVE STAR while BRIAN SILVER was awarded the DEFENSIVE STAR. Salem was beaten 22-0 as the Defense again shone while the offense did its thing. Putting together back to back shut outs is a difficult task, but, Saugus defeated Briscoe of Beverly 27-0 the next week. STAPLES again re- ceived the GAME STAR with twoTD ' s and excellent defensive work. JOE GILLIS and BOB CORDEAU, two outstanding linemen, were given OFFENSIVE STARS while TOM ANDERSON and GREG NICKOLAS were awarded the DEFENSIVE STARS. The following week Saugaus defeated Gloucester 22-8. DOUG ORLANDO stood out on defense and was given the DEFEN- SIVE STAR while the entire offensive back-| field shared the Offensive Star. Marblehead defeated Saugus 8-0 in a fine game. The team played well, al- though the offense could not get cranked up. The season was at a 6-2 with a tough Lynn B team ahead. In a game where the spirit of the team Defensive Unit Greg Diamond Greg Diamond could have let down, the boys of Saugus came through and drubbed Lynn B 19-0. This fourth shut out of the season kept the points against tally at 4 2, an average of only 4 points per game - a most creditable statistic. The OFFEN- SIVE STAR was awarded to BUDDY STAPLES and the DEFENSIVE STAR was shared by STAPLES and PEACH. Steve Peach was also awarded the GAME STAR. Saugus can once again be proud of a team who did well in the win- loss column, but more importantly learned to play well together. All of the coaches agree that the 1977 team came a long way during the season to finally place second in the Northeast Conference. c 51 Billy Tomassi FOOTBALL CHEERLEADERS Row 1: Cindy Couturier, Debbie Reardon, Denise Snook. They then had trouble with Gloucester and lost a close game 3-1. In this game they had led for over two periods when in the last few minutes Gloucester came through with 2 goals. The Winthrop games was a physical one with hard checking and wide open skating. Although they played hard, Saugus was unable to beat the Vikings. The Danvers game saw Saugus come from behind with 3 goals late in the game but it was too little too late as they lost 5-3. Against Salem, Saugus got back on track and took the victory 4-1. Several of the games were snowed out due to the Blizzard of 78. One of those non league games was to have been a match against the faculty but the snow concelled this too. The team had a wide variety of scorers and played consistent hockey with Daryl Andrews and Jim Madigan in goal allowing only 18 goals over the season while Saugus scored 26 goals led by Dave Emma with 7 and B.J.
