Champs — Northeast Conference SAUGUS TROMPS MARBLEHEAD Dateline: October 2, 1975--In a game marked with excellent offensive play, the Saugus Junior High A team defeated the Marblehead freshmen, 28-6 in the season opener. Scoring for Saugus was Paul Nigro with 2 touchdowns, one of which was a 70 yard kickoff return. Nigro also scored 2 points on a pass from Gerry LeBranti for the points after the touchdown. Mike Furey scored another of the touchdowns and Joe Roberts caught the pass from Gerry LeBranti for the extra points. Gerry LeBranti scored the other touchdown on a quarter back keep. Excellent defensive plays were turned in by Dale Whittredge, Mike Furey and Paul Nigro. Dateline: Octover 9, 1975— SAUGUS PULVERIZES PICKERING — Paul Nigro ' s 4 touchdowns led the way for Saugus 1 36-12 victory over Pickering Junior High of Lynn. Other scoring was done by Joe Roberts on a pass from Gerry LeBranti and John Rouleau caught another pass from LeBranti f or the 2 point conversion. Excellent defensive play by the entire team, led especially by Don Trainer and Dale Whittredge lead to the victory. Dateline: October 16, 1975— SAUGUS SUFFERS FIRST LOSS OF THE SEASON— Swampscott put in two quick scores and although Saugus played very well after that, the Saugus Frosh were unable to come back and suffered intead the first loss of the season. Outstanding play was turned in by Don Trainer, Dale Whittredge, Michael Allan, and Mark Appoloni. Dateline: October 23, 1975 — SAUGUS BLAZES OVER BREED— Increasing the season ' s record to 3 wins and 1 loss, the Junior High A team defeated Breed Junior High of Lynn, 18-0. Touchdowns were scored by Gerry LeBranti and two by Paul Nigro. LeBranti ' s passing game was re- sponsible for one of the touchdowns, while Paul Nigro ' s second touchdown came on an 80 yard run. Other offensive standouts were Mike Furey and Mike MacKenzie. Defensively, the team worked very well with notable work turned in by Rick Barrasso, Mike Mac- Kenzie and Mike Allan. Dateline: October 30, 1975— SAUGUS DEFEATS DANVERS— The Junior High A team defeated Danvers 22-14 in an excellent offensive effort. The victory raised the team ' s record to 4 and 1 for the season. Mike Furey led the offense with consistent running and scored a 2 point conversion. Gerry LeBranti and Paul Nigro scored two of the touchdowns and John Rouleau scored for a 2 pointer. Dale Whittredge scored the third touchdown and ran well on the offense. A great deal of credit goes to the offensive line, Don Trainer, Mike MacKenzie, Rick Barasso, Mike Allan and Gary Heaney. The defense was led by Dale Whittredge and succeeded in stopping Danvers when it counted. Two interceptions helped to stop Danvers. Dateline: November 6, 1975 — SAUGUS SWAMPS SALEM— The Junior High team managed to defeat Salem in an outstanding game marked by united team effort and outstanding defense and offense, thus, the season record is 5 and 1. Dateline: November 13, 1975--SAUGUS BEATS BEVERLY — The A game had Saugus on top 12-7 in a very hard fought contest. Scoring for Saugus were Gerry LeBranti and Paul Nigro. John Rouleau and Don Trainor played well on offense while the defense was sparked by Mark Appoloni, Rick Barrasso, Don Trainor, Mike Furey and Dale Whittredge. Dateline: November 20, 1975— SAUGUS DEFEATS GLOUCESTER — An 18-0 victory by the Junior High A team over Gloucester clinched at least a tie for the Conference championship and guarantees the best record in the history of Belmonte Junior High Football. Paul Nigro scored three touchdowns behind an excellent offensive effort by the entire team. The defense also played an excellent game. Dateline: November 25, 1975--SAUGUS WINS NORTHEAST CONFERENCE CHAMPIONSHIP— In a 20-0 victory over Winthrop, the Freshman team clinched the sole posses- sion of the Northeast football conference title. The game was highlighted by a complete team effort with each of the 53 player squad performing in a portion of the game. The defense for Saugus allowed only 3 first downs in stopping Winthrop. This is the third shutout the team has had this year. A final average of allowing only 7 points scored against the team per game makes the 1975 Frosh team one of the finest in the league. (MISSING: Tri-captain Bill Peach) The 1975-1976 Freshman Basketball Team, although it did not set and Junior High records, did manage to have a 10-6 record at the time of printing. The team was also anticipating the Wakefield Freshman Invitational Tournament. Eventhough the team was not the biggest team coached by Coach Bryan, it was certainly one of the most talented with Mark Faraci ' s offensive shooting and Don Trainor ' s defensive rebounding. The only loss was to Melrose. At major meets during the season, such as Bishop Fenwick, the team finished first. At the Norhtem Area Invitational meet the team placed third. The B team also finished the season well and looks promising for next season. Paul Cargill not only received many awards in the invitationals, but he also placed first in all the dual meets. Bob Casey, Chip Thompson, Ken Hanlon, and Pete Frazier also placed well during the season. Assisting the A team wereBill Peach, Mark Wasson, Tony Belmonte and Steve McGrath. The B team was aided by Jeff Rice, Larry Landrigan, Wayne Slattery, Dan O ' Brien, Chris Vattalaro, Mark Yanofsky and Vin Griffith. Special mention should be given to the only two girls on the team, Joyce Langlois and Starrann Rouleau who were members of the team. This team was given a trophy for being undefeated.
