Leading by 8-0 at the end of the first half, the Saugus Freshmen managed to outscore the Winthrop team in the first game of the 1974 season in front of a crowded home cheering section. Keith Manning gained a total of 37 yards rushing giving him a 4. 1 yards per carry average while Dan Hashem gained a 55 yard total for an average of 3. 6 yards per carry. Although Saugus was shutting out Winthrop in the third quarter, an apparent let down in the 4th quarter saw the Saugus team squeeze by with a 16-14 victory. Outstanding offensive effort was noted in the jobs done by Paul Nigro, Keith Manning, Dan Hashem and the quarterback, George Nicolo, who completed 4 out of 5 passes. The defensive team was greatly aided by the ef- forts of Billy Osgood and Frank Serino. In the second game of the season the Gloucester Fishermen romped over Saugus with a 14-0 score. The third game saw Sau- gus overcome by Marblehead 6-0. The following week Saugus managed to reverse the score with a 6-0 victory over Eastern Jr. High of Lynn. The winning points were scored in the last 40 seconds of the game. Manning showed notable defensive effort while Hashem aided the offensive unit. Swampscott outscored Saugus in a well played game the next week with a 20-0 score. With over half the season over the Saugus team had a 2-3 record but the spirit and the persistence of the coached was transferred to the team as they prepared to meet Breed of Lynn. The work and the effort of the team paid off as Saugus brought home a 20-14 victory over Breed. Eric Pizzotti, who made an 8 yard run after receiving a 7 yard pass from Billy Osgood, scored 6 points. Billy Osgood then scored 12 points using a quarterback keep from the one yard line both times. v F o o t b a 1 1 1 a 30
