Keith Manning gained a total of 37 yards rushing giving him a 4. 1 yards per carry average while Dan Hashem gained a 55 yard total for an average of 3. 6 yards per carry. Although Saugus was shutting out Winthrop in the third quarter, an apparent let down in the 4th quarter saw the Saugus team squeeze by with a 16-14 victory. Outstanding offensive effort was noted in the jobs done by Paul Nigro, Keith Manning, Dan Hashem and the quarterback, George Nicolo, who completed 4 out of 5 passes. The defensive team was greatly aided by the ef- forts of Billy Osgood and Frank Serino. In the second game of the season the Gloucester Fishermen romped over Saugus with a 14-0 score. The third game saw Sau- gus overcome by Marblehead 6-0. The following week Saugus managed to reverse the score with a 6-0 victory over Eastern Jr. High of Lynn. The winning points were scored in the last 40 seconds of the game. Manning showed notable defensive effort while Hashem aided the offensive unit. Swampscott outscored Saugus in a well played game the next week with a 20-0 score. With over half the season over the Saugus team had a 2-3 record but the spirit and the persistence of the coached was transferred to the team as they prepared to meet Breed of Lynn. The work and the effort of the team paid off as Saugus brought home a 20-14 victory over Breed. Eric Pizzotti, who made an 8 yard run after receiving a 7 yard pass from Billy Osgood, scored 6 points. Billy Osgood then scored 12 points using a quarterback keep from the one yard line both times. v F o o t b a 1 1 1 a 30 Fawcett scored a 2 point conversion on a pass from Osgood using the FERN SPECIAL. For the first time the line was able to open holes for the running backs. Outstand- ing play was shown again by Dan Hashem with blocks from fullback Keith Manning. Outstanding defensive play was put in by Mike McCarthy, Paul Serino, and Allan Virgin. The entire 50 member team played in this second TOTAL TEAM victory. On Friday, November 8, 1974, the Saugus team overcame Danvers 18-0. Ha- shem, Manning and Fawcett each scored 6 points. Hashem ' s points came after a 17 yard run. Manning scored on a 4 yard run and Fawcett scored on a pass from Osgood. The defensive team played its best game up to that point using both a 5-2 and 4-3 defensive pattern to stunt Danvers offense. Outstanding defensive players were Cash, Nigro and Doyle. An example of the defensive technique was when Danvers had a first and 10 on the Saugus 25 yard line and the Saugus defense got together and soon it was fourth and 55 on the Danvers 20 yard line. Offensively Saugus had control of the game from the start. Great running was noted in the performances of Hashem and Man- ning. Other outstanding players were Riley and Paul Serino. Since the entire 50 man squad played in this game, it, too, was a TOTAL TEAM victory. The following week the n A team lost a well played defensive game to Salem, who was sporting a 7-0 season. Playing well in this defensive effort were Paul Serino, Bob Spacer and Harold Cash. The remainder of the defensive unit is to be commended as well. The half time score was 8-0 and the final of 24-0 saw Sau- gus in defeat. Salem ' s coach did remark about the Saugus team in the following manner: You (Saugus) were the hardest hitting team we have played. 31 32 . . . Down When Defeated, Nonchalanant When Victorious . . . The Saugus Freshmen Have A 5-4 Season Entering the final game of the season with an even 4-4 record, the Saugus team vowed to make this a winning season. Even though the Saugus schedule was the toughest in the Junior High history, the Saugus Frosh thought positively and worked hard the final week of the season in preparation for the Beverly game. On November 21, 1974, the Saugus Freshmen man- aged to make their season record a winning 5-4 with a 28-8 romp over Beverly. The points came in the first half with a quarterback sneak by Osgood, giving Saugus a 6-0 advantage. In the second half Hashem scored both a touchdown on a sweep and a 2 point conversion. Manning, on a pass from Coffey, scored another 6 points while Hashem again went in for the 2 points after. Finally, Fawcett, also on a pass from Coffey, scored 6 points, making the final score Saugus 28-Beverlv 8. Again good defensive techniques prevented Beverly from scoring. The offense had its best day of the en- tire season by taking advantage of the JET PASS, which opened up the game for Saugus. To recap the season the coaches had two remarks: The team played all year as though seeking a goal. It wasn ' t until the final three games that the goal be- came clear — to win! This goal helped to move the team on to a winning season. Down when defeated; nonchalant when victorious; it wasn ' t until the final win produced a successful sea- son that the team as a whole understood the meaning of winning. 33 ROW 1: Mr. Flynn, Mr. Keddy, J. As of the time that this publication went to the printers, the team had a 15-4 record and was planning to compete in the Newton Police Athletic Association Invitational tournament for the top 16 teams in the state. Many individual records have been broken as well as team records. Keith Manning has broken the records of John Nicolo and Steve Gannon for most field goals with 175. Paul Serino was closing in on the record held in 1971 by his brother, Rich Serino for most assists.
