I In the season opener against Beverly on September 20, 1973, the freshman squad, helped by turnovers and the weaknesses of the opponent, sneaked by with an 8-0 win. Saugus scored in the first quarter when Joe Carbonello recovered a blocked punt in the end zone. The two point conversion was made by Roy Picciotto. Although the of- fense only managed one first down throughout the game, the defense showed promise from linebackers Pat Sullivan, Mark Calhoun, and Bob Hess. Using an I formation the starting line consisted of Hess, Wheeler, Carbonello, Di- Mauro, Sullivan, Griffith and Stewart with Jay LeBranti at quarterback. When interviewed about the game, Coach Petrone re- marked that the team must have done some praying before game time as the game was definitely a gift from Beverly. One week later, with the help of three touchdowns by Mark Calhoun and one by Jay LeBranti plus a two point con- version by Bob Hess, Saugus beat Pickering at Lynn. The fi- nal score of 28-8 reflected the second win of the season. Outstanding defensive players were Pat Sullivan and Andy DeLeary. Saugus suffered its first defeat of the season at the hands of Swampscott in the first home game of the season on October 4, 1973. The Saugus team was psyched up for the game but lost its drive due to the prolonged wait for the opponent to arrive. First quarter action saw Saugus down 14-0. In the second quarter the Sagus defense came back when Swamp- scott had first and goal on the five yard line and managed to hold them to only 3 points. Hess then put Saugus on the scoreboard when he ran 24 yards after completing a pass from LeBranti. Half time score was 17-6. Fourth quarter action was notable as David Smith ran 15 yards for a touchdown and then scored the 2 points. Final score was 24-14. Pat Sullivan and Bob Hess were outstand- ing defensive players while David Smith showed good off- ensive effort. Saugus was burned by Breed of Lynn in the first half of the next home game. On a 25 yard run Breed managed to score in the first quarter. Saugus was held to no score in the first half. In the opening kickoff of the second half, half back Dav- id Smith pushed Breed back to the endzone and put 2 points on Saugus ' scoreboard with a safety. Final score was 13-2. Hampered by a rain soaked field the Saugus fresh- men were unable to score until the fourth quarter of the game against Marblehead. With a 65 yard kick off re- turn, David Smith put Saugus on the scoreboard. He also added the 2 point conversion. The final score was 14-8. Vowing to change Winthrop to Losethrop , the Saugus team moved the ball to score in the first quar- ter of the next game at Winthrop. Mark Calhoun was credited with 6 points on a dive play. In the second quarter Craig Warren scored on a quarterback sweep. Half time score was 12-0. In the third quarter Dav- id Smith used a sweep to add 6 more points to Sau- gus ' score and he also added t he 2 point conversion. The entire team seemed to show great effort and en- thusiasm as it shut out Winthrop 20-0. Pat Sullivan played an outstanding game at Winthrop. The following week Gloucester outscored Saugus 6-0 at Saugus. On November 10, 1973, the freshmen tied Dan- vers on a blustery Saturday morning home game. The score was 6-6. Although in a losing cause, and fighting the on- coming darkness, the ninth grade team played its best all around game on November 15, 1973 again- st Salem. The offense was playing at peak perfor- mance with Craig Warren and David Smith leading the way. The defense also played well and the en- tire team showed desire and talent throughout. The final score was 28-6. The team was hampered during the season by a series of injuries. The following players were all at one time or another out due to injuries: Jay LeBranti, Mark Calhoun, Don Hess, Keith Conant, Jeff Wheel- er, Joe Falzarano, Jack Milward, Mike DiPesa and Mike. Rice. With the loss of nine players, the coaches had a tough job, constantly revamping the squad to meet the needs of the team. When asked for a comment on the entire season, Coaches Keddy and Flynn remarked: The ninth grade team this year was characterized by unforseen ups and downs . They would play well and practice well and inexplicably fall off at game time. Another week practice would seem endless and then at the opening whistle, the team would put forth a winning effort. Throughout the season, the coaches were pleased with the performance of the team, disappointed at the record of the team, and yet optimistic of their value to the high school squad next year. Basketball Despite a decided lack of height, being the smal- lest team in the league, the Freshman Basketball team posted a respectable 9-9 record. Coach Bryan cited their constant aggressiveness on the boards and on de- fense as a deciding factor in nullifying the height ad- vantage of opponents. The starting five players were; Jeff Swirka, season game highest (22 points), co-captain Jay LeBranti, sea- son game highest (22 points), center and co-captain Pat Sullivan - seasons game highest against Beverly Memor- ial (12 points), forwards: Bill Lindquist - season game highest against Salem (16 points) and Keith Manning - season game high against Breed (28 points). The leading scorers on the team for the season were: Keith Manning - 302 points, Jay LeBranti - 231 points, Jeff Swirka - 130 points and Bill Lindquist - 124 points. The leading rebounders were: Keith Manning - 265 re- bounds, Pat Sullivan - 230 rebounds and Bill Lindquist - 144 rebounds.
