Coaching the team for Saugus Junior High has been the job of Mr. Petrone for the past four years. It has been his responsibil- ity to create the teams that would be efficient and smooth working units. It is not an easy job to mold a working team from a group of individual players. Coach Petrone, aided by the assistant coaches, has carried out this tremendous task well. He has pulled together some outstanding teams for the school . It is for this reason that, we as departing grade nine veterans of the team, dedicate this year ' s football section to the man who has done the most work for the team, gotten the most Excedrin headaches during the season, and received the least glory that might, by some strange coinci- dence, have been bestowed on the junior high team--Mr. Patrick Petrone, Coach of the Saugus Junior High Football team. minutes left in the first half. Pagliarulo assisted by Gannon and Gillespie helped to get Saugus on the scoreboard, thus making the half time score 18-6. The Saugus team came back in the second half defensively with a strong effort by Connaughton and offensively by Mackie but the team was unable to stop the deep passes and sweeps. The game ended with a score of 26-6. It was a hard fought game but, nevertheless, depressing to the Saugus team. The members of the team worked hard this season trying to pull together a strong tough squad. After three weeks of grueling prac- tice every night after school until 6 pm. and Saturdays until 11 am., the Saugus team played its open- ing game against Newburyport on September 28, 1972. Coach Petrone aided by Assistant Coach Keddy had built a strong squad. Saugus ' starting line consisted of Frank Scuzzarella and Robert Fabrizio as ends, Steve Gannon, left tackle, Bob Meader, right tackle, Bob Gillespie and Tim O ' Neil, guards, and Mike O ' Neil was center. The backfield was occupied by Tom Heaney and Bill Granara as half backs, John Strangle as full back and Richard Pert was the starting quarterback. Sporting a 5-4 normal defense technique, the Saugus defense was hard hit by the Newburyport of- fense who managed to score a total of 13 points through good use of the option and deep passes. Al- though Saugus was unable to score, there were some examples of good effort by Mackie and Gillespie and in the second half Connaughton showed promise. Defensive ends Gannon and Boudreau were tough but not tough enough for the over- powering opponent. Heaney was very impressive as a ball carrier in this opener while Pagliarulo showed ability to read the guards but was weak on tackles. With no comment on the opener, Coach Petrone faced a week of drills striving to build a strong backfield while Coach Keddy vowed to strengthen the line. One week later on a somber fog shrouded day, the Saugus team suffered its second defeat at the hands of Swampscott. The contest was a bloodbath in the first half with Swampscott scoring three touchdowns. Saugus did, how- ever, manage to score with only The red machine was back in gear The red machine was back in gear when it faced Lynn one week later. Through good defensive team effort Saugus managed to come from a scoreless first half to a final score of 18-0. Touchdowns were scored by Granara with a 35 yard reverse, Mackie with a 7 yard dive and a sweep by Heaney. Scuzzarella and Strangie inter- cepted one and two passes respectively. Having won its first game the team ac- quired the momentum to face Maiden Catholic and the Bud Men (as the team called itself) had risen again - this time to a 28-0 win over Maiden Catholic. Heaney scored in the first half with a 55 yard run while Gannon recovered a fumble in the end zone for a touchdown after which Heaney scored a 2 point con- version (end around at 1) to make half time score 14 - 0. In the second half Heaney made a 60 yard pass to Fabrizio for a touchdown and Nicolo made a 40 yard pass to MacDonald to score. The point conversion came when Nicolo passed to Jimmy Burke. Nicolo and Heaney demonstrated outstanding de- fensive effort in this game. A feather brings luck With a 44- 30 win over Winthrop, Saugus managed to put another feather in its cap- But, this time it was not Nicolo ' s feather; it was Turgiss ' peacock plume which managed to bring the luck. Using a tackle trap and a sweep, Heaney scored 2 touchdowns. Mackie dove over the line for 6 points while Strangie managed to come across with 6 points through the use of a flea flicker play from Heaney. A pass from Nicolo to Scuzzarella and another from Heaney to Fabrizio put 12 more points on Saugus ' scoreboard. Scuzzarella put three more feathers in his cap with 3 two point conversions while Nicolo completed a pass to himself for another 2 point conversion, faring the first half Strangie showed outstanding defensive effort and technique when he intercepted a short pass and gave Saugus the momentum needed to score. Connaughton and Sullivan each recovered fumbles while Tim O ' Neil, Mike O ' Neal, Gannon, Scuzzarella, Sullivan and McCarthy (the line) showed great effort as offensive players. 38 ROW 1 (L TO R): Joseph Pimentel, John Nicolo, Donald Frederick, Alan Turgiss, Mike Essegian, Robert Mc- Carthy, .Tom Heaney, Robert Gillespie, Robert Fabrizio, ROW 2: Billy Granara, John Strangle, Frank Scuz- zarella, Dennis MacDonald, Anthony Pagliarulo, Neal Connaughton, Tim O ' Neal, Robert Meader. Saugus was on the scoreboard from the first quarter when Nicolo ran three yards for a touchdown. Adding to the excitement of the first quarter was an interception by Strangie at the 40 yd. pass to Scuzzarella. Second quarter proved to be just as exciting with a touchdown scored by Fabrizio on a pass from Heaney. Starting the second half with a 12-0 score, Nicolo handed off to Heaney to score Saugus ' last points. Although Saugus did not score in the fourth quarter, the excitement was not lacking as Scuzzarella intercepted another pass and carried the ball 20 yards. The last minutes of the game saw Strangie again intercept at the 20 yard line and run the ball back 30 yards. The well disciplined teamwork, exploding offense (led by Heaney) and the tight defense (led by Strangie) managed to let Saugus make it 4 wins in a row. BOMB! Saugus bombed Danvers with a score of 14-0. Starting in the first quarter with a wing back hook from Nicolo to Heaney and a full back trail for the lateral by Strangie, Saugus was on the scoreboard. The 2 point con- version was made on a pass from Nicolo to Scuzzarella. In the second quarter a bootleg at 9 pass from Nicolo to Fabrizio made half time score 14-0. Although no points were scored in the second half, action was not lack- ing. Scuzzarella, who had intercepted a pass at the 40 yard in the first half, again intercepted in the end zone. Connaughton managed to recover a fumble and a thirty yard pass from Heaney was completed by Fabrizio. The cornerbacks and safeties, as well as the team in general, showed outstanding effort as they won their fifth straight game. A 6-2 Season In the final game of the season, Saugus managed to beat Marblehead by a score of 20-6 and earn a 6-2 season record. In the first half Heaney, using a 41 sweep, scored 6 points. Then, using a 41 half back pass from Heaney, Fabrizio managed to score. It was a bootleg at 9 pass from Nicolo to Scuzzarella which made half time score 14-6. In the second half, even though the defensive backfield of Marblehead covered like a blanket , Saugus managed to add 6 more points to its score when Mackie, using a 34 dive play, gained the 3 yards needed for a touchdown. A combination of good blocking, good running, and a good mix-up of plays together with an interception by Heaney and two fumble recovers by Scuzzarella and Mike O ' Neil respec- tively, enabled Saugus to win the final game of the season. Congratulations team ! Basketball . . . Coach Bryan cited the constant determination and hard work of the Freshman Basketball team as the major factors contributing to the success of the team this season. The Saugus Freshmen have been averaging 60 points a game while limiting their opponents to 50 points. The leading scorers were co-captain John Nicolo, co-captain Steve Gannon, Al Stickney, Dave Manning and Tony Pagliarulo. John Nicolo has been averaging 20. 5 points a game and Steve Gannon has been scoring an average of 19 points a game. The leading rebounders were Steve Gannon, Al Stickney, Bob Fabrizio, Rich Pert, and Tony Pagliarulo. Steve had anaverage of 15 rebounds a game while Al av- eraged 9 rebounds a game. Defensive standouts were: John Nicolo, Dave Manning, Steve Gannon, Tony Pagliarulo and Al Stickney. The team was invited to participate in the seventh annual Jr. High and Freshman Invitational Basketball Tournament sponsored by the Newton Police Athletic Association. The first game was played on February 19, 1973 against the defending champions, West Junior High School of Watertown. This page is dedicated to Mr. Bryan, a man of great dependability and devotion. Mr. Bryan is a man who cares about his athletes to the extent of helping them on his own free time. He is the type of man who will go out of his way to perfect something or to help improve an athlete ' s fundamentals. He cares more about a boy ' s health and physical well being than any game, no matter how important the situation may be. In the many years past, Mr. Bryan has been known for doing more than required at his coaching job as Freshman Basketball Coach and Varsity Cross County Coach. This year he started a Junior High Cross Country Program which is another sign of his concern for young athletes. It is for these reasons that we, your Freshman Basketball Team would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your concern and consideration. Hockey . . . HOCKEY SCOREBOARD Saugus Swampscott 2 Saugus 1 Lynn Classical Saugus 7 Danvers 2 Saugus 3 Gloucester 3 Saugus Winthrop 3 Saugus 9 Lynn Classical Saugus 2 Winthrop 4 Saugus Marblehead Before this book went to the publishers there were two other games played which were worth mention. The Junior High team played against the faculty. The first game saw a 7-6 victory for the students while the second saw the faculty come back for a 7-3 win over the students. Both the students and the faculty deserve recognition as a result of these two encounters. This year the Belmonte Junior High hockey team was in the midst of a rebuilding year with only seven regulars returning. Of those regulars Stu Holt and John Spinney showed much overall improvement. Consistently scoring for the team were Tom Heaney (co-captain), Stu Holt, and Bill Gran- ara, who also held the dubious record of most penalty minutes for the team. Steve Wallace did double duty for the team, as did Tom Heaney, playing on the first line and killing off penalties when needed. Defensively, Mike O ' Neil (co-captain), Jeff Fiorva nti and Stu Anderson did an excel- lent job at keeping the other teams at bay plus adding an offensive punch of their own. Mark Chrisos, Roy Skidmore, Dave Nas- uti, Dave Reiniger and Luke Wall would all be eligible for any team ' s seventh player award for a job well done, above and beyond what would be expected. Next year the team has some good talent coming back in the form of Richard Kasabuski and Tom Stretton who will be sharing goal tending duties for the team, Bruce Holt and Tim Nicholson at defense and Bob Stewart, Don Hess and Scott Whittredge leading the offense. This year the team had considerably more ice time in the form of regular practice ses- sions and also several exhibition games with the Regional Vocational school and Mascono- met Regional High freshmen. The team record for exhibition games was 3 wins and 1 tie. As was mentioned in the scoreboard the highlight of the team ' s activity was a contest in which the team defeated the faculty 7-6 on a much disputed goal, however, again it is worth mention that the rematch game was won 7-3 by the faculty with the help of John Spinney in the goal for the teachers. Profiles Of A Hockey Coach Baseball As this book goes to the publisher the 1973 baseball season has not yet begun. However, the 1972 season deserves mention. Former ninth graders: William McCarthy, Philip Casella, James Scannell, Joe Mar- kowski, Peter Genzali, Steve DesLoges, Paul Carbone and Jim Wiswall aided by the present ninth graders: John Nicolo, Mark Chrisos, Mike O ' Neil, John Strangle, Tom Heaney, Roy Skidmore, Bill Granara, and Luke Wall managed to experience an exciting season shown by a 9-4 record. Coach Petrone is very optimistic about the 1973 season with the anticipation of the return of the seven veteran players. Coach Petrone remarked. I expect that with the help of one or two eighth graders our 1973 season could be our best in the last three years. As the season begins our only wish is that the team, aided both in spirit and technique by Coach Petrone, will experience a winning sea- son.
