This year head coach Petrone with the help of coaches Collins and Gerome turned out a superb team. It was a rough start, losing one out of the first three games and tieing the other two. The outlook was grim with even tougher competitors ahead. Coach Petrone was rumored to be pacing the floor in anticipation of the games ahead. The team was spirited on and won four out of the five remaining games. The season ended as 4-2-2. Outstanding players for Saugus were Dennis Hartigan, Gary Elsmore, Frank Mancuso, Bob Sweezey, Bob Iozzo, and Rich Serino. Congratulations to these stars and to the whole Saugus team for an outstanding effort and a fine season. ROW 1: K. Emberley, D. Hartigan, D. Westaway, J. Wall, C. Orlandella, R. Neal, B. Nicolo, P. HOCKEY 1971 Just as there has been a rising interest in hockey as a sport throughout the entire country, so too has there been a rising interest in hockey at Saugus. The 1970-1971 season was a winning season for the Junior High team. The schedule included six games of which the team lost only one. With a combination like Frank Mancuso guarding the net, Andy Hohmann, John Anderson, Bob Sweezey and Bill McNair as forwards and Gary Elsmore and Alan Upton as defense, how could the team lose? The team was coached in its winning season by Mr. Manoogian and Mr. McLaughlin, The entire team made outstanding efforts, aided by the above outstanding players, throughout the season. When the season terminated in early February our team had a 5 - 1 record. A total of 10 points was scored and the team subsequently finished first in the league. The second place team, Gloucester, finished with 8 points. Although there was no tie for first place, a playoff game was held on February 13th. The result was an upset for Saugus with a score oi Gloucester 6, Saugus 4. Mr. Manoogian attributes this upset to the lack of a full strength team due to illness and vacation. The entire team deserves congratulations for an outstand- ing season. (Due to photographic difficulties, we are unable to print a team picture.) TEAM: A. Hohmann, J. Wall, E. Salsman, B. McNair, F. Mancuso, M. Colantuoni, J. Anderson, S. Anderson, G. Elsmore, B. Sweezey, J. Chaves, A. Upton, K. Emberly, S. Prentice, C. Ro, B. Stewart, J. Scannell, S. Colantuoni, S. Holt, R. DeMauro, M. O ' Neil, T. Heaney, F. Barrett. Basketball The basketball team experienced one of its best seasons this year. Led by the coaching expertise of Mr. Bryan, the team sea- son record was 12 wins and only 4 losses. An over-all team scor- ing record of 996 points was established during the 1970-1961 sea- son. The team efforts were aided by various outstanding players who established individual game and season records. Rick Lanney set the following game records: (a) Most Points Scored - 34 (b) Most Rebounds -27 (c) Most Field Goals - 13 (five times). He also established the following season records: (a) Most Rebounds - 248 (b) Most Points Scored - 339 (c) Most Field Goals - 132. Lanney also became a member of the Century Club and is accredited with the best field goal °Jo record. Steve Bartlett is accredited with Most Assists in a game (15 assists) while he shares with Rich Serino the season Most Assists record of 72 assists. Besides Lanney three other players gained membership in the Century Club: Rich Serino, Doug Ross and Steve Bartlett. Leading rebounders were Doug Ross, Steve McGrath, Rick Lanney, Bob Iozzo, Rich Serino and Steve Bartlett. The entire team of players and Coach Bryan deserve utmost congratulations for a superb basketball season.
