Consider- ing the strength of the Northeast Conference, this is respectable. They were able to beat the teams they should have and were only beaten by outstanding teams The team got off to a good start with a 20-6 victory over Winthrop. After a low start, the Sachems went on a surge which saw them score 20 points in the course of three minutes. Senior Ben Lynch scored two touchdowns This game was highlighted by the absence of Phil Franco on an extra point kick. It was eventually kicked from the 30 yard line. The next step was a 21-12 victory over Salem. This was the first Saugus Victory over Salem in ten years. Highlights included the Marc Fauci-Steven Worthley connection and a strong defense. The next Saturday featured a loss to Beverly (an eventual Super Bowl team). The team played well offensively, with Keith Coviello returning from an injury to stabilize the offensive line. Marc Fauci was throwing well, and Ben Lynch and Jay Migliore led the rushing at- tack. A 28-22 loss to Gloucester followed. Although Saugus dominated the first, third, and fourth quarters, Gloucester ' s 28 point surge in the second quarter could not be overcome. The Sachems then met Lynn English who had their best year in years. Saugus lost again despite a good offensive and defensive effort. Highlights included the play of Steven Donahue at center, and Ed Gordon at wide receiver. The next week ' s loss at Marblehead was a hard fought defensive game by both teams. Swamp scott ' s inspired play in week seven led to another loss. The only offense Saugus could get together was a 70 yard touchdown by Ben Lynch. Saugus was then able to compose itself, coming back with a 52-32 victory. These 52 points were the most ever scored by a Saugus team. Classical also ran three kickoffs back for touchdowns in this freaky offensive game. The winning streak then continued with a 28-6 win at Danvers. Saugus took control in the second half and never looked back. Stephen Woodworth and Chris Shute anchored the line. The team reached a milestone with a 22-14 victory over Peabody on Thanksgiving. This was by far the best game Saugus played all year The team played consistently, with intensity and a desire to win the game. Highlights included a great offensive block by Mike Hunter to spring Jay Migliore for some big gains, sacks by Ed Flam- mia, and great defense by Tim Baker, one of the better defensive players on the team. Overall, Coach Ward was pleased with his team, a good group of hardworkers. Jamie Filosa was one of the better receivers provid- ing a positive influence on the rest of the team. Bill Fortunato provid- ed enthusiasm. Coach Ward would like to wish the Seniors the best of luck. He enjoyed coaching them this season. He would also like to thank them for their leadership Boy ' s Soccer Anthony Sforza, Captain Ryan McMahan, Captain Eric Fraser, Mike Eric Fraser, Ryan McMahan and Antho Magarian, Dan Gasser and Peter Piso (Ballboy). Standing . . from left to ny sforza right: Assistant Coach John Bernard, John Rogalski, Ed O ' Connell, Ja- son Tibbetts, Jay McDonough, Steve Cabral, Scott Bergeron, John O ' Donnell, Dave Lavoie, Dave Melanson, Peter Mears, Chris Barbanti and Coach Gannon. Dan Gasser Jonathan O ' Donnell Mike Magarian  Boy ' s Varsity Soccer The boy ' s Varsity Soccer Team finished its season with a record of 9-8-1 Though the team did not make the state tournament, the team played with championship qualities. Leading the team in scoring was. two time N.E. Conference all- star. Eric Fraser. He finished the season with 11 goals and 12 assists. Trapping opponents offsides repeatedly was defend defensive strongman Anthony Sforza. Anthony ' s enthusiasm kept the team going all season. Charles Sofronas played well in net the entire season. Charles posted five shutouts and had a 1.38 goals against average. Tri- Captain Ryan McMahon, after having been sidelined with an ankle injury for the first part of the season, finished the season strong. To all the seniors on the team, I wish you the best of luck in all your future endeavors. Coach Cannon ■■I 41 Girl ' s Soccer This synopsis of the 1988 girls soccer team is being written from a coaches point of view. This season was text book perfect. All of our preseason objectives were met. We made the state tournament; we played exceptionally well; we grew as a soccer team; we were injury free; and above all; we had a good time accomplishing the above! I would like to take this opportunity to say that this season was truly success- ful because of the assistance of my three captains: Keri Dawiki, Nicole Starrett. and Jen Shell. I will always have a warm spot in my heart for each member of the 1988 girls soccer team, but especially the tri-captains mentioned above. Good Luck to each of you! Coach Comeau Wit Standing (L to R): Coach Linda Boudette, Jean Henehamn, Christine Pop- plawski, Renee Emanuele, Heather Anderson, Erika Sanborn, Michele O ' Connor, Karen Tozza, Kim Sarno Kneeling (L to R): Nicki Melzer, Cindy McKeever, Tara McKenney, Co-Captain Bonnie Carlson, Co-Captain Jen Morrison, Dawn Swimm, Tonya DiChara 44 sac ||, !|| fff, The 1988 Field Hockey Team ended their season with a record of 6-4-2. The team was led by Senior CO-Captains Bonnie Carlson and Jennifer Morrison. Both were named Northeast Conference All-Stars, along with Junior Renee Emanuele. Senior Cindy McKeever was outstanding throughout the season, anchoring the de- fense as a sweeper along with center halfback, Jen Morrison. Jen was the doni- mating force on the team and was named Lynn Item Player of the Year in Field Hockey. Forward Link Tara McKen- ney was always found hustling to get a loose ball. Her presence was especially felt in the 1-1 tie with Swampscott as she responded well to a change of position. Also found on the forward line was Bonnie Carlson. Bonnie was the leading goals- corer. The greyhound put her speed to the best use, often streaking by oppo- nents to pick up the loose ball and put it in the net. Utility player Dawn Swimm was found on defense. She responded well to playing any position she was asked to play; a total of eight different positions. Coach Boudette would like to thank her seniors for their leadership and hard work. Congradulations and good luck in the future! 45 Girl ' s Tennis 46  v This year ' s girls tennis team set out to improve on last year ' s 4-14 record. They did that and more, with a 7-11 record moving them from 8th to 6th in the con- ference standings. The only senior on the team was Maura Cunningham, who saw her first varsity ac- tion this year at the doubles position. Several players had successful seasons for the team, winning key points to clinch a match. They were Krista Ellis at singles, Anne DeVito and Di Wang at first doubles, and Lisa Cefalo with Rayna Girad at sec- ond doubles. vA •- ■mm w% 2m Jennifer Manning had an all-star sea- son, with a person- al best 17-1 record at first singles and being unanimously voted to the con- ference All-Star team. The addition of Di Wang to the team this year helped to strengthen the doubles team. — 1 Tennis , 47 Golf This year did not look very promising early in the season. Only one player returned from last years state qualifier and he decided to join the soccer program. However several new people joined our program: Matt Di Cologero, Mark Corsino, Brian Cunningham and Patrick Murphy. We decided to go along with these players and continue our golf program. Nick Diranian who was to become our captain and a true leader and competitor, played at number one through the entire season. Eric Kelley joined us early into the season and half way through the year we were joined by Derek Milano, Dave Cottom, Brian D ' Amico, Ed TarlowskL Steve Mc Carthy and Ryan Cavhlo. We suddenly became formable and Competitive! Marblehead particularly was very upset at us for beating them. We put together three wins on the season: Winthrop, Marblehead and Lynn Classical as against six losses. The program survived and with most this seasons players re- turning, next year should be very exciting. Highlights this season were: Derek Milano with three Wins and four Losses playing in the NEC all-star match, Ed Tarslowski ' s steady play, Brian D ' Amico consistent at H 2 played well in the Marblehead match and David Cottom at his best in his win in the match against Marblehead. Especially appreciated were freshman: Eric Kelley Patrick Murphy, Ryan Cavahlo. Hockey The Sachem Icemen had a tough year under the new head coach Scott Brasis. who we would like to thank for all of his time and dedication. Even though the season had some disappointments, the team pulled together as a unit and ac- complished some crucial victories. Dave LaBorde was outstanding in net. He came up with the big saves when they were needed. Other outstanding players were Captain Jay McDonough, a determined athlete; and Eric Fraser, a top goal scorer. Not only were these forwards on the first line, but they helped on defense as well. Another player who was overlooked was Bill Fortunato. Bill was not top in ability, but always top in spirit and support. When giv- en a chance he did what he had to do. The team would also like to thank our cheerleaders for being there and giving us support. We won as a team and lost as a team, and no one will ever take that away. Thanks again! 51 Boys Basketball The 1988-89 Edition of the Saugus Boy ' s Basketball team has surprised alot of people this year. Picked to finish in eighth place at the start of the season, the Sachems are currently in second place with a 9-3 league record Led by Co-Captains Steve Worthley and Ryan Mc Mo- tion the team won its opening game at Marblehead After losing a close game at English the team rebound- ed with a convincing home victory against Swamps- cott. This started a run of 7 straight victories at home These victories included wins over: Classical. Beverly, Gloucester. Marblehead and dramatic come-from-be- hind win over Winthrop and a rout of English 87 to 61. Senior Paul Zermani directs the Saugus attack from his point guard position. Jeff Sartori is a steady contributor from the second guard position Ryan Mc Mahon is the ve rsatile swing man operating as a third guard or small forward Jr. Ron Mc Carthy plays the power forward slot and Steve Worthley rounds out the starty 5 at the cen- ter position. Senior Russ Magnasco is the important sixth- man oft the bench as well as guards Dave Dow and Brian Lovett. Other contributors to the team include Chris Tarantino. Dave Pugh. Keith Mc Cabe and Sopho- more Chris Mc Mahon. Potential All-Star Steve Worthley has been a pleasant surprise and is currently the third leading scorer in the Conference with a 16.9 average as well as leading the team in rebounds. The team has been characterized by good defense, good team chemistry, excellent shooting, balanced scoring and unselfish play Most games find 4 to 5 play- ers in double figures which makes it very difficult for the opposing teams to key on any one player. T . mm ■■' 2 a I Girls Basketball The 1988-1989 Girls Varsity Basketball Team put forth a tremendous effort in a competitive con- ference this season. Returning starters from last year ' s squad included co-captains Jen Morrison and Renee Emanuele, both of whom led the team in the scoring and rebounding categories. Two other important catalysts from the senior class- Lisa Donavan and Dawn Swimm, made major contributions to the team. Dawn provid- ed aggressive post defense and astute offen- sive play along with outstanding floor leader- ship, while Lisa led the team in swats and was our third leading rebounder. Jen Morrison topped three successful varsity Basketball sea- sons dominating the boards and leading all scores, proving herself worthy of her selection to the Northeast Conference All-Star Team two years in a row. Coach Ryan would like to thank this years team for all of their hard work and dedication. She wishes the best of luck to the seniors as they continue their individual quests through college and life. She feels that it has been an honor and a privilege to know each team member. Wrestling 56 This season the boys wrestling team has compiled a record of 6-6-1 with 3 matches and 1 tournament left. Last season the team finished with a 2-13 record. Last season was the first time in Saugus ' history that a wrestler (Glen Obey) placed 1st in the state finals. The previous year Dave James placed 2nd in the state and 3rd in New England. Heading in the same direction this year is sophomore Seth Hatch. He wrestles at 125 pounds and is 11-0. Along the way he has compiled 9 pins. With Seth are Co-Captains Dave Lavoie (8-0) and Chris Kelley (9-3). Both captains show great promise in placing in the sectionals in their individual weight classes. The entire team has worked hard and deserves a pat on the back. The team is only graduating one senior, Dave Lavoie, which leaves a great nucleus for next seasons team. Gymnastics The Girl ' s Gymnastics team, under the coaching of Marie Sullivan, was newly formed this year after not having a team last year. The season started off slowly but keeping the spirit, the girls did not give up. The team consisted of only one senior. Colleen King, but a strong support from the junior class and support from the soph- omore and freshman class. Captains of the team were juniors, Stacee Goldstein and Vikki Kodzis. The team worked hard for every compe- tition and their work paid off in every meet. We wish the best of luck to next year ' s team and hope that their season will be as successful as this year ' s was!!! 59 Swimming . Saugus High Swim Team had a great season. Coach Zanita Smith and Captains Denise Silva and Helen Silva led the team with never-ending energy. New mem- ber Brian Alcott showed determi- nation, while returning seniors Fred Toomey, Leah Riddle, and Rachel Salvo continued to be im- portant parts of the team. All in all the season will be one to remem- ber. Congratulations to Helen Sil- va and Brian Ciampa for becom- ing All-Stars in the conference meet. 61 Football Basketball Cheerleaders The SHS cheerleaders enjoyed an incredibly successful season this year. It began this summer with our visit to a National Cheerleaders Association Camp. NCA taught us alot of new techniques, but the most important thing we learned was how to work together as a team. Each day a spirit stick was awarded to the five most spirited teams On the last day they gave one to each of the squad which were present. At the ceremonies on the final day. the football squad was given a spirit stich stick to take home, for being one of the five most spirited teams. We were proud to represent Saugus High and to be honored with such an award. Next came the long summer of putting together halftime routines to dazzle the fans. We were able to put together both eye catching and spirit rousing stunts and cheers. The time and effort put in were well worth it, and it was our privilege to present our routines to the greatest fans in the world, right here at Saugus High. Our first competition was on November 10th, and alot of hard work and effort went into the team ' s routine. Our dance theme routines were made to the American An- them theme. Tough routines with incredible stunts were arranged for our performance at the Beverley Field House. Our team was successful, taking home fourth place, third in the conference, in the football cheerleading competi- tion. It has been a great year for us, and we are we ' ve enjoyed all the great times cheering the Saugus High School teams on to victory. Soccer-Hockey Cheerleaders In June of 1988, some of the soccer -hockey cheerleaders attended NCA cheerleading camp at Brandeis Camp Univer- sity. After visiting the camp we found many new moves and ideas that were valuable in making this year a suc- cess. During the 88-89 school year we entered a competition. On Novem- ber 10, 1988 the soccer cheerleaders came in second and defeated their long time rivals Lynn English. Special thanks for a great year go to Coaches Lisa Leccesse and Kim Wall, also to the football cheer- leaders. 65 Track We have a winning record 4 wins, 3 losses Salem and Winthrop remain to be played. Salem will be a win but Winthrop is a tough opponent. In this, our fifth year, we have yet to have a winning season. This will give respect- ability to Winter Track and hopefully will develop and interest in our girls program. This year a number of boys sigvil in, Twenty-Five, Twelve girls also joined in but not quite enough to make-up a team to have their own separate program. Matt Di Cologero (Hurdles), Ed Nazzaro (600 High Jump) John Bowser (2- Miles), Bob Nazzaro were the only Veterans from 1988. (50 8c. 300) were the only Veterans from 1988. New comers include Greg Blake 300, Top Scorer Pete Mears 50, High Jump, John O ' Donnell 600, High Jump, Aaron Di Bella Shot Put, Eric Kelley 1000, Bob Fisher Mile, Dave Leuci Shot, Frank Casquade 2-Mile, Chuck Falzarno 2-Mile, Paul Spadafora 1000. Bonnie Carlson has been a bright light for the girls number one in the 600. This year has been very successful for us at Saugus. With wins over Swampscott and Marblehead. Highlighted our season — We beat Danvers by winning the last event: 4 x 440 relay with Ed Nazzaro :57, Bob Nazzaro :59, Jon O ' Donnell :59 and anchor Freshman Greg Blake :58. For a season best time. Final Score Saugus 46, Danvers 40. Establishing Saugus as a competitive foe in this league six of our athletes qualified to State Competition. Bonnie also qualified in the 600 for the State Meet at Harvard. The middle school has been extremely co-opera- tive in allowing us to train in their facility and this is very benifical to the continued success of our program. It just seemed to disappear. The Class of ' 89 is One of a Kind. Like a difficult puzzle that boggles the mind. So many pieces didn ' t seem to fit The future of out class looked like a bottomless pit. But little by little it all seemed to change The parts of the puzzle all rearranged The spirit from Color Day set the pace Then all of the pieces fell into place Separate but united, we all stand together Sharing the memories we will hold on to forever By Jen Sarnie Summer Jobs Almost every teenager growing up in the eighties has listened in awe to their parents talk about when they were young. It is hard to believe that a movie was only $2.00 and it only took $3.00 to fill a gas tank. Nowadays, a movie is $5.50 and it takes anywhere from $10 to $20 to fill up your car. It is no wonder that many kids have found it necessary to maintain a job. Getting through the school year is hard enough to afford, but when the summer hits, forget it! Teens need so much money to keep up with the ice creams, movies, and lunches, not to mention keeping the car running. Whether kids work 10 hours or 40 hours, they never seem to make enough to satisfy their summer activities. Endless numbers of paychecks are cashed week after week, as kids plan bigger and more expensive activities. Not all teens blow their checks every week, some do build up a savings, but these kids are hard to come by. Since the summer job is so important in the students ' lives, the yearbook photographers decided to catch some snapshots of the Class of ' 89 out of the classroom and in the working world during the summer prior to senior year. 117 Favorites FAVORITE MOVE: Rahman FAVORITE ACTOR: Tom Cruise FAVORITE ACTRESS: Molly Rhgwald FAVORITE HERO IN A MOVIE: Sylvester Stallone (Rambo) FAVORITE VILLAIN IN A MOVIE: Freddy Kruger FAVORITE ALBUM: Hysteria (by Del Leppard) FAVORITE SINGLE: My Perogatlve (by Bobby Brown) FAVORITE MALE VOCALIST: Bobby Brown FAVORITE FEMALE VOCALIST: Debbie Gibson FAVORITE COLOR: Blue FAVORITE FOOD: Pizza FAVORITE RADIO STATION: 94.5 FM WZOU FAVORITE RESTAURANT: Kowloon FAVORITE SUBJECT IN SCHOOL: English FAVORITE TELEVISION STATION: Mtv FAVORITE TEACHER: Mrs. Yagjian Who ' s Who Steven Worhtley and Debbie Murphy Kathy O ' Donnell and Dave Laborde 123 132 00 13H£, r ft 1 « V S§1 ;s 133 FOR SAVINGS Member FDIC and DIFM There ' s no one you ' d rather talk to.
