The Saugus High Football team finished a successful season with a 5-4-1 record finishing in 3rd place in the Northeastern Conference. The team was picked to finish in the conference cellar but fought back against all odds to surprise all the so called experts. The team showed much desire and determina- tion all year especially in upset wins over Lynn Classical and Danvers. The team had a five game conference winning streak which has never been done by a Saugus Football team. Saugus co-captains were Mark Strangle and Anthony Guthro. The players would like to thank coaches Mike Ginolfe, Kevin Ward, Mike Bontempo, Pat Peterone, Don Trainor and Dave Soper for all the work and effort and for never giving up on them even when things were not going good. 32 FIELD HOCKEY Row 1 . . . Maggie Buchan, Colleen 1982 NORTHEASTERN CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS The Girls Field Hockey Team put forth a supreme team effort which resulted in a highly successful season with an undefeated record of 11-0-3. This was the first unbeaten field hockey team at Saugus High and the first solo championship. The team also qualified for the State Tournament where they defeated Beverly, 4-2 in the quarterfinals before losing to Lexington, 2-1, in overtime, in the semi-finals. The team was led by Co-captains Pam Thorton and Lori Silvaggio who gave their all in each game and practice to lead the way by example. Pam led the team in scoring with 21 goals and 9 assists while Lori was second with 6 goals and 5 assists. The team placed four all-stars on the Conference Team which included: Pam Thorton and juniors, Sharon Serino, Colleen Wall and Kim Carter. Each and every team member deserves a great deal of credit for their effort in making 1982 a most successful season. GIRLS ' TENNIS Row 1 . . . Stephanie Kennedy, Erin Demond, Donna Serino, Paula Manning, Sue Leonard, Dianne Bowes, Coach Ron Ahern. The 1982-83 girls tennis season proved to be very successful. Led by tri-captains Maria Polimeno, Caroline Bartlett, and Tracy Mac- Donald and an all out team effort the girls ended with the best record in their history at 10 - 8. The team would like to thank Coach Ahern for all his help and by making the season an enjoyable one. This season the soccer team completed its most successful season in many years. Their record was 8-4-2 which was two points shy of qualifying for the state tournament. The team was lead by Captain Ed Service, Jim Gammon and Mike Ciccarelli. Kevin Service was the teams top scorer with 11 goals and 7 assists. The defense of Greg Notola, Ch arlie Barbanti and Andrew Wallace held the oppostion to only 15 goals while helping post 7 shut out victories also playing well for Saugus were seniors Kevin Vater, Rich Constantino, Mark Curran and Dave Taylor. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE 1982 GOLF TEAM Although our golf team record this year was a respectable 6 wins and 5 losses, I felt that our potential was not achieved. Team captain, Scott Sarver played extremely well all sea- son as did our number two, Fred Moore. An early loss to Salem in September really gave us a jolt. In 1981 we were undefeated and we expected to be somewhat stronger this year especially with the addition of Ed Kinnally and Mike Papsadora. Fine golfers Mike Soper and Scott Westlake round out our golf team. Our second league match was against a weak Lynn Classi- cal and it was consequently, an easy win for us. Next on our schedule were Marblehead and Swampscott and they beat us fairly easily. Both these losses were unexpected because they were home matches. Next was an away match against Danvers High School and we beat them IVi to 4Vi which came at the right time. Lynn English destroyed us and the feeling for a second league championship was pretty much diminished. We proceeded to win our next two league matches against Gloucester, with a IVi to 4V4 win and then a 9 to 3 win against Beverly. This gave us a winning streak against Beverly, three in a row. Then came the game with Win- throp, at home. Surprisingly, they beat us with the closest score of the year, 6V2 to 5V2 with the last shot of the match deciding. A two foot putt. This season we lost matches we should have won. To add strength to our first two teams, we moved Fred Moore to position three, to team with Mike Soper. This proved to be very successful. Even though Scott Westlake played the best golf of his career, our third team, with Gary Lembo lacked consistency. Team four alternated with Dave Ander- son and Ted Raftilis. Bill Morella and Rich Williams im- proved all season but couldn ' t win matches consistently. Winning championships sets goals worth striving for, but this year ' s efforts were not to be reached. 44 GIRLS SOCCER Row L . . . BOYS BASKETBALL GIRLS BASKETBALL GIRLS BASKETBALL STATE SEMI-FINALIST The Saugus girls varsity basketball team finished off their successful 18-2 season in second place in the Northeastern Conference and advanced to the semi-finals of the state tournament. A great overall team effort by the Sanc hems was the key to their success. Saugus was led by senior tri- captain Pam Thornton who averaged 25 points and 10.5 rebounds per game and ended her high school career with an unprecedented 1080 points. Tri- captain Dina Diflumeri displayed tremendous improvement and leadership over the season as she averaged 7pts. per game and 9 rebounds. Tri-captain Suzanne Murray inspired the team with great hustle and super defense as well as averaging 5 points and 5 rebounds per game. Saugus looks forward to another great season next year with 8 players returning with varsity experience. Row 1 . . . Saigus High School Northeast Conference Co-champions Woodman Cup Playoff Champions Eastern Mass State Tournament The hockey team finished season with a 16-2-2 record, which was good for a share of the Northeast Conference Championship, and also the Play-off Championship. Captains for this years team were Louis Finocchiaro, Dave St. Peirre and Jay Staples. Six members of the team were selected to the North- east Conference All Stars Greg Natola, Lou Finccchiaro, Tom O ' Con- nell, Jay Staples, Dave St. Pierre and Ed Service. The team was the first to win a Northeast Conference Championship, besides setting a team first there were also some individual first. Louis Finocchiaro became the schools all-time leading scorer with 150 points. Jay Staples led the Northeast Conference in Shut-outs and goals against average, and the defense, led by Staples, along with Tom O ' Connell, Ed Kinnally, Dave St. Piere and Ed Service allowed the fewest goals in the league. si GYMNASTICS Row 1 . . .
