mm public urnm SAUGUS PUBLIC LIBRARY 295 Central St. % Saugus, MA 01 906 So many roads to choose. We start out walking and learn to run. We ' ve only just begun . . . 5 It ' s been such a longtime, I think I should be going. Time doesn ' t wait for me, It keeps on rolling. So long on a distant highway. I ' ve got to keep on chasm ' a dream Though I may never find it. Good times and faces that remind Comin ' back to find me Scattered pictures of the smiles laughter fade into memories . . . which we will forever cherish. What Happens When You Come To The End Of The Rain- bow And You Must Say Goodbye To Your Friends. The Friends That Helped You Find Your Pot Of Gold. It ' s Too Early To Have To Say Good- bye And Too Late To Start Again. Laura Dwyer 11 Life so they say, is but a dream and they let it slip away. Love like the autumn sun should be dying, but its only just begun. We may never pass this way again . . . ... So I wanna laugh while the laughing is easy, I wanna cry if it makes it worthwhile. I may never pass this way again that ' s why I want it with you . . . cause you make me feel like Tin more than a friend. Like I ' m the journey and you ' re the journey ' s end. I may never pass this way again . . . 12 DEDICATION . . . Make your sail and every heart will know of the tale. Make your tune for none may sing it just as you do. Look at the way you glide, caught on the wind ' s lazy t ide, sweetly how it sings, rally each heart at the sight of your silver wings. Find your way for none may know it just as you may. Good-luck Mr. Bly, and thank-you for everything. The class of ' 79. THANK YOU . . . Thankyou- You came to the rescue when no one else cared— and because of you we have finally reached success. There is truely nothing we can do to ever repay you— all we are able to do is say THANKS! The Tontoquonian Staff of ' 79 17 How can we thank someone who has taken us from crayons to perfume ... It isn ' t easy but . . . we ' ll try! 23 24 Anthony Dcmattco, Coordinator 26 John Scarborough M 31 32 Set the equation equal to zero and occupy the circumference but never square the radius g Remember to be able to recognize your amino acids and never excite your electrons when outside of the nucleus and never cheat on a Chemistry test. - Carol DiViao The years may pass and the faces may change, but the memories will always remain . . . September 1976, and the arrival of the new sophomore class; scared, but looking for a friend, and adjusting to a new way of life. Suddenly you ' re a junior; following in the footsteps of the seniors - setting an example for those sopho- mores - and still trying to fiture out just what it ' s all about. Then all too soon an end to it all and a new be- ginning - Senior year; bringing with it the happiness as well as the sadness of graduation day, not only for you, but for all those who know you. I ' ve seen you come and go and I ' ve watched you mature and grow, in mind and in body, but most of all I ' ll remember the happiness you ' ve added to my day, as well as to my life. You will be missed . . . but never forgotten. Thank you Class of 1979, for being you. With only four returning starters, Paul Nigro, Don Trainor, Bill Peach, and Mike Allen, the Saugus Sachems were not expected to be contenders in the Northeastern Conference. However, two convincing wins over the powerful teams of Winthrop and Classi- cal proved the Sachems to be worthy of defending the title. The remainder of the season was seen to be unpre- dictable. By defeating teams such as Salem and Beverly, the title seemed to be still within our grasp. The losses to Glouster and Marblehead made our goal impossible, yet the team contained the same spirit it had possessed all season. Such spirit was displayed in the game against English in which Paul Nigro rushed for 235 yards in the first quarter. The Thanksgiving game capped off a successful season for the Sachems. For the first time in a dec- ade, the Sachems defeated the Tanners at Peabody! The support given by the fans throughout the year was greatly appreciated by the members. Next years team looks as if it will have a promising season for sure 165 . 1 After a poor start, losing to larblehe2 varsity soccer team compiled a record to be proud of. In all these games, solid goal tending was displayed by Dave Dwyer. Ken Taylor played outstanding defense. Art Con- nors, the team leading scorer, was a great asset to thj club. The team should be commended for their effort played all year. 168 J.V. SOCCER CHAMPS The 1978-79 J.V. soccer team completed their sea- son with a record of 13-0-1 to win the Northeast Con- ference championship. The team was lead by co-cap- tains Doug Gould and Bill Snowden. Striker Nei Oli- vera was the leagues lead- ing scorer with 24 goals and 6 assists. The defense was lead by goalie Gary Smith who turned in 7 shut-outs and had a goals against average of 0.67 per game. 170 FIELD HOCKEY The varsity field hockey made history this year for they came in 1st place in the N.E. Conference, for the first time in Sau- gus High history. The team finished the season with an out- standing record of 10-2-2. This team had drive, determination, skill and most of all a closeness and willingness to work together. Also, the locker room decorations show the intense team spirit. Key games that the team will never forget were the defeats over Glouster and Danvers. All-stars for the team were Julie Fahy, Debbie Serino and Katey McCormack. But it was a total team effort, along with the excellent coaching of Diane Marcy and Debbie LeDrew. Because of their tremendous ac- complishment, the girls were awarded jackets. 171 This years boys cross country team finished the sea- son with an outstanding 7-2 record, placing Saugus 3rd in the conference. George Thompson was cited as the top runner, with an individual record. He was also the only Saugus runner in history to qualify foe the All-State finals, in which he finished 30th. The team will certainly miss this years seniors, who are capts. Paul Cargill and Bob Casey, Mark Was- son, Steve McGrath, Art Carlson and Mike Stew- art. 174 Paul Cargill Bob Casey George Thompson GIRL ' S CROSS COUNTRY This years girls cross country team finished 4th in the confer- ence, with a record of 6-3. This is the best girls team in the history of Saugus High. The team was lead by Carol Di- Vaio and Michelle Forni. This years seniors included capts. Carol DiVaio and Jean Lud- wig, and Eileen Kane. 178 — GOLF - Golf team members Nick Stolos, John Bettano, and John Belliveaux played steady golf all season. Together, this group was responsible for our two victories over Winthrop and Marblehead. Other members who con- tributed to the team, and will be leaving by graduation are Tip ONeil and Andy Hocking. Sophomore, John Belliveau has great potential for fu- ture seasons. Bob McQueen, who was also excellent all season, should play in the 2 position next year. Eric Nauman and Steve Barry will fill out the nucleus of the 1979 golf team. This years golf team would like to thank the people at Mt. Hood, in Melrose, and Golf Town in Peabody, who allowed us reduced rates. 179 Cindy ranked high among her NE conference 1st singles counterparts. The steady play of seniors Donna Emma, Debbie Cosco, Darlene Smith, Lisa Jarosz, Janice Bowes, along with juniors Rhonda Pucci, Janice Tilly and Roberta Fucillo gave Saugus a competitive team. 180 181 GIRL ' S BASKETBALL 182 BOYS BASKETBALL 186 GIRLS GYMNASTICS 192 HOCKEY 194 195 WINTER TRACK — BOYS 197 GIRLS WINTER TRACK 198 200 202 MR.
